I will finish my SRB-Runner soon (I hope so), and now I´m looking for a speedcontroller.

On the last page of the Tamiya-RC-catalog from 1987 (Bigwig on the cover, Porsche 959 on the Back), there are a few racing-pics of races in the USA from the early/mid 80s. (I think it´s not only on the 1987´s catalog).

On the first pic of the 3rd row (from above), you can see a guy wrenching on a frog (He´s wearing a white/yellow "Hobby Bench Raceway"-Baseballcap)

Now I wanted to know which mechanical speedo has the frog? I can remeber that I had a similary one on my old Kyosho Super Sport (from around 1978), and I also can remember that this speedo had more then 3 steps.

Yes, it would be much easier to use an ESC, but I want to ad the "low budged + low tech" - feeling to my SRB.

Does anybody knows if there´s a company which still makes stepless mechanical speedos?

I can remember that I had always troubles with the 3-step unit in my old cars.

The closest thing I remember from the days of yore is the resistor type of MSC, this was an adaptation of the vital parts of a Parma slot car hand controller.

These were the resistor and wiper suitably wired up and combined with a servo, this would give you the desired "vintage feel" to your car.

BUT all the waste heat is dissipated by the resistor, which of course, is now locked up in the electrics case! and cannot be cooled properly.

You stand a good chance of melting things, but if you must you can still get all the bits from Parma.

I can't remember what value resistor is needed tho, and they do everything from 0.25 to 60ohms.

didnt the speed controllers in the old f2 cars only have 2 speeds?

i used to have a march 782, i never fitted radio gear and i couldnt run it anyway becuase i didnt have the right battery, but i did check over the msc, and it only had 2 speeds in forwards and reverse -

its appearence gives it a stepless look, but as the blade part moved across the contacts it only ever increased speed once.

unless it was busted [;)]

Sounds like your's is busted. Probbaly a break in the wire somewhere.

The wirewound wiper controller as used in the early 1/12ths is infinitely variable between 0 and full speed and its reversing too.

Parma's ceramic one and the fancy one in the Racing Masters were fwd only (also fully variable) with a variable brake at the other end.
