It's a standalone film, not part of the new trilogy and its set just before episode 4 (ie the original Star Wars) and tells the story of the Rebels that stole the Death Star plans that Princess Leia hid in R2D2. So it's gonna look old skool baby 😜 That scene with the AT-AT walkers coming across the beach gives me tingles everytime!

I think Disney should remake the first three films, I think everyone would rather forget they ever existed, including the cast!!

Micro Machines released a wired remote walking AT-AT in the late 1990's - might be worth a look.

Oh yeah, I remember them. I'll have to keep a look out for one, cheers

So, I've been playing the Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures game. I'm completely hooked. Anyone else play? I even started a YT channel to upload my games too.

I'll just post this gorgeous animation here for you guys to discuss...

Keep in mind that this is mostly the creation of 1 (!) man, while his assistants did music and special effects.

I nabbed my Rogue One tickets at midnight on Sunday, one for a 2D showing and the other in IMAX 3D.

I'm not gibbering with excitement with this one like I was this time last year with TFA but I'm still really looking forward to seeing how they handle this story and the return of Vader. As with every other previous Star Wars movie, how good it is will depend on how endearing the characters are and also the power of the musical score. A great story and FX will help too of course. :)

I'm sure you'll like it mate, if you liked TFA, you'll like this no doubt. Interested to hear your views, looking forward to be able to discuss it without fear of spoiling. I'm actually gonna go again on Dec 28th. Think 2 times on the big screen will be enough for Rogue One, compared to 4 times for TFA B)

Well I saw the movie last night and, just like last year with TFA, I came out with my head spinning.

I'm not going to make the same mistake as last year though, and deliver a verdict on the film. I need a second viewing to be able to do that so I am back to see it again on Monday.

My initial thoughts though are that it is a very good film....but not a classic. Right now it doesn't rank higher than TFA and it's miles away from Episodes 4 & 5.

Still though, I remain very happy that the franchise is in the hands of Disney as they are looking after it well.

I will post a full verdict after Monday's viewing. :)

Went to see it with my Son today, going to watch it with the rest of the family again on Wednesday.

I thought the acting was really good, I won't say anymore until a week or so when everyone who's that into it should have had a chance to see it!! :)

Caught the film last night and @Wandy this reflects my position exactly.  Yes my head is still spinning the next day and I can't wait for my second viewing.  The faults you can pick in this film are no different to the faults that you can pick in most films including other Star Wars films really.

Again I took kids, this time aged 8 & 9 and I will say that they were less engaged compared to when I took them to TFA.  These guys we're 100% into Kylo Ren and Rey but not so much into the R1 characters and I think the ongoing battle scenes were just too much for younger kids to really capture their attention.  I thought TFA was really well targeted at the new generation and hence why a lot of old school Star Wars fans didn't like the history repeats nature of TFA.  They might have thought that they should have been the target audience for that film and they simply were not.  R1 definitely does pander to the needs of the old school Star Wars fan better than TFA I believe.

When we reach 1 x week after release, I reckon the spoiling period is officially over and we can start getting into the nitty gritty !

Ok, so I have seen Rogue One three times now, and therefore I feel qualified enough to pass judgement.

In summary, it's a very, very good addition to the Star Wars franchise. I would say that it only just falls short of greatness, mainly down to the fact that the characters and story aren't as compelling as the two true greats, Episodes 4 & 5. I also think that Episode 7 just pips Rogue One on that factor too.

In terms of cinematography & CGI though it is without a doubt the best Star Wars film yet. It looks absolutely stunning, especially in 3D. There were some scenes in which I actually experienced very brief "vertigo-like" moments, such was the realism of the scene.

As far as the inclusion of the two CGI recreated characters goes, when I saw the film the first time I was astounded at the realism of the male character. After 3 viewings though I could clearly see that he didn't really look truly human. I still think he has been done incredibly well though, and believe that Lucasfilm/Disney were completely correct in bringing him back like this. The female character probably looked even more realistic in terns of human likeness, but the actual features were maybe a tad off from the real life actress from back in the day. Still though, this was another incredible technical achievement from the film makers.

I'm still not convinced it was the correct decision to omit the traditional title crawl though. I think it could easily have been used with a simple "Rogue One" title. By keeping the episode numbers present in the classic movies people would be able to distinguish the difference between those and the standalone movies to come. As it was, the lack of the crawl gave the film the feel of a TV show, rather than a movie, and therefore didn't quite have the epic feel of the SW movies gone by.

The soundtrack was pretty unremarkable too, although the music that accompanied the final moments of the movie were very special indeed.

Still though, these are minor quibbles. The movie is very enjoyable and has some truly fantastic scenes, in particular the final few minutes that probably everyone knows about by now. B)

I'd give it a score of about 8.7/10, and the joint 4th best SW film along with ROTJ. Episodes 5, 4 & 7 remain my top three though.

Roll on Episode 8, and please, Disney, keep up the great work. :D
