TGX Mk1 Porsche 911 GT1 detailed build

Recommended Posts

I've been a fan for the 1/8th scale TGX for some time now and about a year ago, I purchased a NIB Porsche 911 GT1. This is my second GT1, and my third TGX. My first I picked up on eBay (GT1), hopped it up, and then converted it to brushless. My second I bought as a rolling chassis/parts car, and now this third one I will build mostly stock (due to limited hop up availability), and keep as a nitro. Some hop ups I removed from my brushless TGX will make their way into this one, like the 2 speed transmission, engine hop ups, and some others that I find available during this build. And as it should, it will be fully ball raced.

I would love for Tamiya to re-release the TGX some day, but as a brushless kit. There's so much room in the market for them, along the likes of the Kyosho Inferno and Ofna Hyper GT, etc.

Enough small talk, here we go...

Wow...this is awesome! Gonna be following along on this one!

I have always liked the TGX cars but never got one! Did have a lot of the HPI Super Nitro's though, even converted a few to brushless myself! Do you have a thread on your brushless TGX?

Man...that was awesome...lol...! Seeing that brought back some memories...so I just pulled my brushless Super Nitro Rally with scooby body off eBay ...lol! Changed my mind about selling it...ha! Also got a Kyosho Lancia Delta Integrale (280mm wheelbase) that I have been putting off converting for about 3 years now...! Thanks for the inspiration...lol!

Back at it again over the weekend :)

I found some hop-up king pins in my spares box, so I fitted them to the front suspension.

Love it. Have read your build from begining to end, thanks for taking the time to write it!

Have you got a TA03-RS Porshe GT1 for its' baby brother? Obviously you'll be needing one if you haven't already!

Thanks Chris! I really appreciate it. I was considering it's baby brother but I have the PIAA 911 TA03-RS. Though it would look great parked alongside it's big brother!

Loving this :) , I recently found a NIB Porsche 911 GT1 bodyset 1/10 version for my TA03R-S, and boy what a time that body took to get right with decals etc. I found that after applying most of the decals, I would heat the whole body with a hairdrier to help soften the glue residue, this helped the decals conform to the curves and they haven't lifted a single bit yet :)

Looks fantastic Jim! The wheels really came out great. I had to do a double take, I thought they may have been alloy. Thanks for the tip, I do normally use a hair dryer. Makes a world of a difference, and helps from lifting. Thanks for your kind words Jim :)

Looks brilliant!

My father used to campaign the Ninco 1/32 slotcar version against my Ninco CLK GTR when we used to race at a nearby club.

Porsche_00346.JPG

(Not his car, but one identical to it.)

One day I'd love to build him a 1/10 version - he has always appreciated Porsche design.

Since none of my self bought Christmas gifts have arrived, I decided to spend the day after Christmas applying decals and finishing up the body. While everyone else is building their new kits :D

Step 41, applying decals, lots of decals (over 90!):

Firstly, I wanted to clean up the line between the white on the front bumper and black of the front lip. I used some pinstriping tape I had, and it really helped.

I'm not fussed on nitro cars, but this build thread is great.

Excellent photos and work.

Good to see a build rather than leave it "NIB"

A few more hop-ups had arrived, and made their way onto the TGX these past few days :)

Tamiya manifold and eBay tuned pipe (if anyone has a lead on the Tamiya pipe, please let me know! I've searched all outlets and it seems they are all gone... ):

Nice TGX, if you're looking for rims to fill out the wheel wells a bit more try the HPI mesh rims. for some reason Tamiya rims/tires were a bit on the small side diameter wise.

Thank you Byteme. Yes, the HPI wheels are great. I have a set on my brushless TGX, as well as another spare set.

The HPI wheels are 2.2's and the TGX wheels fall somewhere between 1/10th scale car's 1.9's and the 2.2's. And I'm not sure, but I think the HPI 2.2's are discontinued. I remember I had a hard time finding my spare set at the time.
