Byteme909 27 Posted January 4, 2016 I think HPI stopped supporting this class a good while back. luckily the HPI mesh wheels can still be found via some eBay sellers and the standard slick tires as well. the good stuff such as the racing compounds and the RJ Ride tires are long gone unfortunately. great job on that body; it is a very difficult livery to apply but yours came out superb
neverfollow 599 Posted January 10, 2016 Happy more parts arrived Electric starter: This electric starter was designed to be used with the stock muffler, or turned to the other side of the engine. The hop up header pipe's angles don't allow for correct figment: A little creativity (and heat), and I was able to manipulate the pipe to the angle I needed: With the engine out I fitted the air cleaner aluminum mount accessory: And back into the chassis: The new manifold bends force the muffler outwards, and doesn't allow the body to sit properly, so some more tweaking was necessary: My only issue is that the muffler is now close to the fuel tank. I have some heat reflective tape on the way that I will cover the tank with. If not, the stock muffler or a smaller tuned muffler will have to go on. And lastly, since I was not able to source the complete electric start kit and only the motor: I decided that I will make my own harness that will use a regular 7.2v nimh battery and a push button switch. I swapped the starter motor's connector for a simple Tamiya style battery connector: As you can see, the bending of the header pipe has taken it's toll on it. I may have to clean it up some more and possibly paint it.
Byteme909 27 Posted January 14, 2016 I know the on board electric start is attractive vs yanking on a pull start but in my experience the pull starter is the better way to go. if you flood your engine by mistake you can easily tell with a pull starter vs electric start. typically included motor for the on board electric start is 380ish and is weak, thus has a hard time turning over the engine (especially if your engine is brand new). also you're increasing the weight of the vehicle with the on board starter. have you considered investing in a starter box? I think its worthwhile and also cleans up the car quite nicely without needing bulky pull starter or onboard electric start. performance wise perhaps a motor saver air filter unit? I did consider what you have mentioned. The additional weight I'm not really concerned about. I won't be racing this. Just some open lot runs. The reason why I got the electric starter is just really to try to build a TGX with as many options as possible (or I can find). I did consider a starter box, but I have another 1/8 nitro touring car which I will be building (and really running) next. I'll be sure to start a build thread on that one too
neverfollow 599 Posted January 18, 2016 A little more progress this weekend Since the front and rear sway bar hop up is pretty much extinct, I decided to try to make my own. My brushless TGX has the hop up, so I removed them and copied them using a steel rod. For the brackets, I used Grasshopper/Hornet shock mounts. So the original hop up will go on my nitro, and the home made ones on the brushless. Also installed a pair of ball diffs for the front and rear, as well as the aluminum reinforced tape for the fuel tank. Lastly, the differentials. With the sway bar fitted. The front is identical to the rear, with the addition of the front bumper removal.
neverfollow 599 Posted February 22, 2016 Some long awaited parts finally arrived, as well as an amazing copy of my brushless TGX's carbon upper deck. Fiber Lyte did an outstanding job duplicating it and sending them back to me in quickly and safely. The 2 TGX's, awaiting some tlc: The Fiber Lyte and the Tamiya hop up deck: Ready for disassembly: Standard prop shaft: Standard brake disc: I borrowed the hop up carbon prop shaft from my brushless TGX: Hop up brake disc: Standard vs hop up: Back together: Upper deck ready for chassis attachment: I slightly reconfigured my brushless TGX, it will now run 2 batteries for a total of 4s power. It's hard to see the chassis well, the undertray covers a lot of the chassis: Hopefully my next post will be a video of both in action!
Shodog 1835 Posted February 22, 2016 Your body came our real nice. You can eliminate paint bleeds by using a quality nylon tape similar to what window masks are made of. If there was ever a car to use the soapy water method for sliding the decals around, it's this body. It's especially tricky to get the decal to conform to the rear wheel arch without a wrinkle as its a compound curve.
neverfollow 599 Posted February 23, 2016 Thanks Shodog! I really should have tried the soapy water method. My rear decals aren't lined up with the rear arches correctly. I used Tamiya masking tape. It's my tape of choice, but the curves forced some small lifts in some areas. I think whatever I paint next, I may give the brush on mask a try. And yours is gorgeous by the way! Eric959 51 Posted March 28, 2016 Very nice TGX! Do you have any plans regarding the exhaust? These 1/8 bodies are so detailed, they need a detailed exhaust. Take a look at this one for example:
