After the first of the year I am going to finally pick up a 3speed tundra.

I see most use a stick radio with a gate installed on the throttle to control gear selection. Wouldn't a 3chanel pistol grip work as long as it has a 3 position 3rd channel switch? If I have to purchase a new radio, I am leaning towards a dx4r in pistol or a dx6i if it has to be stick. Are there any mcu compatability problems with spectrum gear?

Can someone explain how the mcu takes input from the transmitter and produces the sounds, lights, and vibrations?

Thanks

The Spektrum DX6i is quite often used with the 1/14 Tamiya trucks, and it can be setup to work with the Tamiya MFU (MFC-01 and MFC-03).. I see no reason why you couldn't setup the DX6i up to work the MFC-02 typically used in the Tundra..

Basically the MFU's connect to the receiver via 4 servo type leads.. The steering and gear shift servos then connect to the MFU.. The MFU has an built in ESC, and the 4th channel of your radio is used purely to operate the MFU... Typically you access the additional functions of the MFU like starting the engine (sound), turning on the headlights, and beeping the horn etc by a combination of stick OR stick AND trim movements..

If you download the MFC-02 manual from the Tamiya USA website, you can read exactly what functions you can control from the radio, and how it is done with a radio that has manual trims.. Using a digital radio like the DX6i, you don't have the manual trims, but there are other ways around that problem..

As for using the DX4r with the MFU, I'm not so sure how successful you will be, but it might take some creative programming of both the radio and MFU to get it to work..

I've been unuccessful in running my MFC-02 with a furans 4pl. It needs those analog trims and the fourth channel to access all the extra functions. My favorite radio for this truck is my 4yf. It comes with nicds for both radio and receiver and its FM
