I happened to come across this old dog and was wondering if anybody knows anything about it? Not much info available. It's a 550 MRP roar motor, and looks very old.

Thanks Erik, would you say it's more a racing motor? I got it with a car I just sold a few minutes ago. It was a 1988 Futaba FX-10. I kept this motor and the pinion because I thought they were some hopup not originally from the car, and yes, also because I needed the pinion for my Hornet/Grasshopper. Not sure it's the proper motor for my buggy?

It was a racing motor for its time. The hottest motors used for 1/12 racing were 29t, otherwise the 1200mAh batteries wouldn't last the required 8 minutes of a heat. Even then it was pretty usual to run out of power before a heat was completed unless you had the best batteries and selected motors. Two friends of mine were Associated team drivers and before races, they typically ran several hundred motors through their motor tester to pick out the very best. The remaining not so good ones were sold to unsponsored racers......

This motor is apparently the standard Igarashi wind with 35t, so a modern 27t silver can will most likely be a lot quicker. Even torque is probably low despite the 35t, simply because the old magnets have lost force and weren't THAT good when new either. It's a cool looking motor though and the colour scheme gives it the right late 70's/early '80's look! :D

Haha, definitely *that* look.

Anyway, I was comparing the photos and the motor I have here is completely black, the base where the spindle comes out is chromed, and there's tabs to solder cables on on its back, unlike the ones in the link. Also the sticker is placed backwards. I wonder if it's still the same motor.

There might be some differences, but they are both extremely likely 35t. After all, the sticker states that it's ROAR stock legal, which at that time meant 35t (and more).

I'd put that motor in a Hornet, since I think the colour schemes would work well together.

Definitely!

Too bad I don't have a Hornet no more :( I could never find a cheap body for mine and a buddy here gave me a Grasshopper body that I reworked and so I downgraded my car to a Grasshopper. No color match possible now.

Anyway, this motor was mounted on this car I just sold this morning: http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=127885&id=23692
