If you really want to trash the living daylights out of a Beetle, get a Blitzer. I run mine with a 9T BL setup, and it has yet to fail me - With paddles on the back on the beach, it will wheelie at will.

Yeah the Blitzer chassis is pretty indestructable. Same as the Bear Hawk, but with improvements like tougher steering setup. Gearbox is bullet proof.

I'm still on my first gearbox in the BB. Managed to crack the tub. Break rear suspension. Crack wheels. 9T will do that with you laughing (:

How long have you had / been running it? I have to say, if someone asked me my advice on a really solid Tamiya runner a Blitzer would be one of the top 2 or 3.

5+ years at least. Has seen 100+ runs with LiPos. Also - it's the one the nephews and nieces get to play with on family weekends - so no wonder something breaks. Fragile is not a word I'd use to describe the BB (:

And not to beat a dead horse too much, but with the tub chassis and hard shell body fully enclosing it and battery strap/brace holding it in place as far as running LiPo's goes the BB does offer really good protection from damage. I don't run LiPo but if I ever felt inclined to I'd probably choose the BB to do it with.

That was one of the things that really impressed me when I resurrected my blitzer, everything is nicely enclosed in the tub.

Roll on the weekend when I can run it again

I run LiPos in all my models. The difference is un-believable...

I believe it. The energy density and discharge rate are amazing. The volatility and pyrotechnic tendencies, however terrify me far too much to be able to use them and still have a good time. I like to be able to forget my batteries on the charger, etc without running a non-insignificant risk of burning the house down. I have a bunch of LiPo's from my R/C helis and not long ago went into a panic realizing I have loads of them left inside flight cases and carrying cases, etc but outside protective bags. When I dug them all out about half were puffy and I tossed them out (probably illegally, in the garbage* - visions of hellacious flaming landfills!) the rest are now stored in fireproof sacks and I can sleep again. But one reason I don't fly as much anymore is it's so much less anxiety-inducing to me running terrestrial R/C on NiMH (not an option for things where weight is a paramount issue).

To be fair, I may just be a huge chicken or overly neurotic/anxious. Others seem to have no problem with them. It's also possible other people are just much better than me at effortlessly maintaining rigorous routines, to an extent it doesn't at all detract from the leisure factor.

* btw - about throwing them in the garbage, I felt guilty but didn't know what else to do with them. I once left a hot, puffy, angry-looking LiPo outside on a brick for months after it went bad on me. I've seen youtube videos of how people intentionally puncture them and burn them up in order to safely dispose of them. I suppose I could use a BB-gun to do this. What do other people do when they want/need to dispose of bad LiPos?

I charge my LiPos at no more than 1.5A. And with 4 or 6 available, a full day out is not a worry. You can only run so many cars at once (: I have yet to see a LiPo misbehave even though I'm a clump at maintaining them (;

I'm sure some of the scary moments I've had with LiPo's have to do with the fairly common phenomenon of 'hard landings' when flying R/C helis combined with soft pack LiPo's. Maybe if my first experience with them had been with R/C cars I'd be a happy camper... but they've scared me once or twice too often.

Statistically there are far more dangerous things ..

Treat lipo with respect and enjoy them..

Smoking is much worse

LOL smoking while running LiPo's makes you a total rebel. But seriously, there aren't any real sources of stats on stuff like LiPo's. I wish there were! I'd be extremely curious to compare incident frequency, damage, injury, etc between things like LiPo, NiMH, Li-Ion, Li-Fe. I'd have to go out on a limb, though, and say that like smoking has on health insurance, or a red paint-job has on auto insurance... if good stats about LiPo's were readily available I bet homeowners insurance companies would charge a higher rate if they could for people using LiPo's. Are there any actuaries in the hizzy??

EDIT: I guess the red car thing is an urban legend... but, clearly, based on the explanation here, only because the stats don't actually show a significant difference.

LOL I ride a Harley Davidson motorbike .. That makes me a REBEL..

Like anything in life make note of the risks and precautions then enjoy...

You would not catch me on a boat or rock climbing but im happy to use lipo batteries in the park..

Think of Nitro and Petrol vehicles .. They must also pose a risk..

I superglue my eyelids together once before lol.. But that never put me off the stuff.

I'm just more careful and fight with my son holding an open tube of glue anymore.

** Apologies to the OP for the egregious thread-jacking... **

That being said I briefly fantasized about getting a Harly years ago. One that came out in 2007-8 I think... forget which. But I've got way too many other things competing to kill me so I decided not to temp fate.

Slightly more topically my motorcycle-riding days peaked when I was a kid and my dad got my brother and me an old minibike (in retrospect, I think it was a Gorilla). We named it the "Hairy Canary", painted it flat black, and I vividly remember wearing shorts and badly burning my calf on the exhaust pipe. Ahhh I miss those days.

I feel exactly the same way. I've heard so many horror stories about them catching fire it does scare me a bit. Just this morning I was thinking of how I could use them without the stress of having them in the house . My idea was to store them in the shed in an ammo box. I've got a pretty big garden so a shed fire isn't going to catch onto anything else and it's only got a bike and the usual gardening stuff in there so if it did burn down its not too big a deal. I'd probably run an extension from the house and charge them there too.

I saw a youtube were this guy built an enclosure around his lipos when he was charging them using breeze blocks as an enclosure just in case they caught fire or exploded! :o . Scared me to death (again) and completely put me off. In a way I'm surprised they're available if they're so volatile.

Despite my fear of them I always start researching them again looking for the best to get and how to store and charge them correctly. I do feel I'm missing out not using lipo. Everyone that uses them raves about them so I really want them.

I just wish that they were like the lipo we use in our phones and tablets. They seem to be safe (as safe as an electrical item can be). They don't need special charging routines or storage routines. And people take them anywhere and aren't constantly thinking, I wonder if my phone is going to explode? Is battery technology for rc cars near to a time when a lipo can be charged without any thought like our phones? That's what I'm hoping for.

Yeah the chemistry of LiPo and Li-Ion are similar if not identical (I think it's different for flat cells vs cylinder-shaped cells). The major difference is that commercial-quality Li-Ion packs include onboard safety circuitry, are always either hard case or sealed-in, and subject to really high levels of quality control and frequent pro-active recalls (has anyone ever heard of a recall of R/C LiPo's or gear? serious question).

The ones that explode / catch fire most often are aftermarket cheap ones that skimp on safety. Check out article below and see pic of the inside of a flat Li-Ion pack (very LiPo-like). One of my other hobbies is collecting old Thinkpad laptops and as a rule I never buy or use anything but genuine batteries... for much the same reasons I'm shy of LiPo's.
