Hi guys

Anyone used brake fluid to remove paint on one of these? I know from before that the grill (black plastic) dissolved in brake fluid. But that could have been a newer bruiser part. These bits seem to be white plastic underneath all the paint , even the grill.

Thanks

The short answer, People have used Brake fluid with success but takes a while. I like Caustic soda aka oven cleaner because it's quicker. I've never heard of a tamiya part dissolving in brake fluid. There are a million threads on this subject, a search will net you lots of opinion.

Yes I've used brake fluid in the past. Just wanted to check in this particular case. Don't want to mess up this one...

The part that melted for me was a black front grill (the old ones are white if I'm not mistaken). Must've been a more recent part for the Toyota hilux body. First it swelled up, thought it was the paint lifting from plastic but then it got all soft and deformed. Smelled like plastic in acetone.

The caustic soda, is that in liquid form or something you dissolve yourself? We have caustic soda here in Sweden, I think it's used to clear clogged plumbing. Our kind is in crystal form.

It all depends on what kind of paints was used, caustic soda works nice on most as does brakefluid but with brakefluid u have dot 3 & 4 which react differently. (And additives which might react with the plastic)

I use the cristal declogging stuff, google for Info's on concentrations. Woodworker forums also discuss removing of paint with soda.

What concentration do you use with the crystal form of soda? It's the easiest one to find around here.

Really hate using brake fluid, always creates a toxic mess no matter how careful I am ;)
