I've recently bought a TA04 to have a go at racing, and I was wondering what to do about the gearing. Race rules say I have to use either 04 or 06 module, but is there any significant benefit to choosing one over the other?

If you could persuade the organizers to relax the rules and allow 48dp spurs and pinions, you'd have much better access to cheaper ratio options :)

Failing that, 0.6 module gears are a finer pitch and marginally more efficient. But less forgiving if you don't get the mesh right (on tamiya spurs at least). I'd go for 0.4 if I were you.

Hi Ritch81, presumably you're referring to the forthcomming Iconic Cup racing. I'm racing there with a TA04 too (in the standard Sport Tuned class).

Presumably thats what your thinking of.

I've had a practice at West London already and found the gearing needs to be as high as possible, with the 25/26 teeth it was mega slow compared to others who said they had very large pinions, even up to 32T.

So I've bought the largest 04 pinion I could get which is 29teeth from Modelsport and found the 29T only 'just' fits on mine. I think the person with the 32T had fitted a 48DP or similar so incorrect teeth mesh AND he burnt a motor out too!!

I haven't tried my car with the 29T on a track yet but Im sure its the right thing to do.

I'm going to the Broxtowe Iconic fun meet next weekend (like many others that are taking part in the Iconic Cup), to get another practice run. Highly recommended mate. I'm very easily found even if you ask for Smitchos.

Hope that helps mate, and good to see that other TC members are attending race meets.

Regards, Simon

Hi Simon, thanks very much for the info!

Yes it is the Iconic Cup I'm going to do, I've been out of the hobby for ages and not really raced on-road before (bar a couple of tedious indoor meets) so looking forward to giving it a try. I'll be at West London definitely, but the Broxtowe event clashes with a work 1:1 race in Belgium so I don't know if I can make that one.

I'm going to have to run in GT, my chassis is bog standard but I don't really have the budget to be going back to a brushed motor/ ESC, when I had a 13.5 set up ready to drop in.

I'll have a look into the fun meet, even if I can only pop up to have a look around, it'd be nice to go to an on-road meet with a friendly atmosphere!
