Hey all you smarter than me people. I can't find this information anywhere and I was hoping someone would know. When painting a clear body with "candy" or "pearl" paint, what color should I back it with? I think silver or white but I don't want to guess. The last time I did that I backed PS-46 with silver when it should have been backed with black. So, what say you?

  • What color should I back a candy paint?
  • What color should I back a pearl paint?

I've always tended to back candies with silver but the pearl may depend on what pearl colour it is and what effect you're after. A pearl purple can turn to an iridescent blue / black if backed with black but could turn more pink/purple if backed with white. Why not attempt a couple of trials with some scrap lexan to be safe?

I usually back with a solid colour of a similar shade, then silver then either black or the solid colour again.

e.g. Pearl white > white > silver > white

For PS-46 I just did black as the directions on the can specified.

Backing a candy with. Gun metal silver gives it a deep rich color. I did this as a paint test on my RS4.

I sprayed the red

Then the gun metal

All depends on what end result you want. As above backing with a darker colour will give a darker finish. Backing lighter will give a lighter finish. For a can top colour match finish silver is always a good bet. But each backing colour will give a different shade result. :)

Thanks everyone! This is exactly the help I needed. I have a candy purple. The nose of the body is going to be silver and the tail is going to be purple. The colors will be separated using an internal sticker. I want more of a deep grape color rather than a flowery lavender. So I'm thinking maybe a gun metal or black backing. This is a ROUGH idea of what I'm going for:

Does the metal flake of the 2nd coat show through? That's what it looks like in the examples from Shodog.

IMO, the 2nd shades colour is the only thing the shows through, so not so much their metallic or peral effect. Although, that depends how thin the first layer is. You can have so much fun with translucent paint, Mettalic and candy/pearls its unreal. Shodog backed a candy with a solid paint colour Gun Metal Silver. :)

When you do a body, keep the cut off lexan parts and use them as tester panels in the future :) Its always good to test before finally putting paint to lexan.

Good plan. Unfortunately I ordered up the pre-cut version of the body this time because it's slated to arrive Thursday and race day is Saturday morning.
