It's because that member's ticked or unticked certain options within their profile page which stops them accepting comments.

They may not realise, so you could send them a message letting them know - It may just be they don't want comments though

Yes, there's two options:

"allow showroom comments"

and

"allow only subscribers to make comments"

If the first is unchecked then non-one can comment. If the second is ticked then only subscribers can comment. This makes sense. My question being if I am I subscriber then why isn't it allowing me to comment?

I thought it might be a flag on my account that hadn't been switched properly after becoming a paying member, or maybe a more general site bug?

If they've unticked "allow showroom comments" then that overrides the second option

As you have the option to leave comments on anyone else's showroom, then it's the way they've set up their comments.
