I've been given a 24 foot by 45 foot (7.3 meter by 13.7 meter) patch of ground in my backyard that my wife will allow me to "play" with for RC purposes. I've been debating about making a crawler/trail track or an off road (jumps, etc) track with the space. My question is, can that size be used successfully for an off road track or is it too small? I know at that size it's going to be more technical than speed but I don't want to just creep along all the time as that gets boring. I thought about sticking 55t motors in a few runners to slow them down, but am unsure. I run stock 540 silvercans in most of my runners now. If the area is deemed too small for that, my fallback plan is a crawler track (although that limits me to my CR-01, CC-01, High Lift and possibly Bruiser). Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.

Well I suppose that the space would make a rather nice track for 1/18 vehicles... ;-)

Honestly, the area that you have is about the same size as my backyard, and I don't think that I would have too much trouble putting a track in that space..

If you were to carefully plan the layout, and include a crossover jump or bridge, and maybe even a wall climb up one of the fences, you could create a rather interesting track.. The track width will be somewhat dependant on the vehicles being raced, and how many racers/competitors will be racing on the track at any one time, but I think that a 1.2M to 1.5M track width would be ideal..

If it a grassed area that you are working with, you could test a layout by simply lowering the height on your lawn mower to give you a rough track outline..

What were you thinking for a track surface? Soft dirt, clay, carpet, grass, a bit of everything..?

About half the area is grass which I plan to cut low. The other half is dirt/small pebbles and grass won't grow there. The crossover idea sounds intriguing.

During winter, our club trains/races on carpet at a 100 sqm venue. We drive modern buggies (Kyosho RB6, Durango DEX210, etc.) with anything between 10.5 and 6.5 brushless setups. Most of us do tone dial down the effect of the cars somewhat, but we have fun racing with laptimes ranging from around 10s to 13s depending on how we build the track. There are 6 to 7 jumps in there too, so I would say that an interesting track for 1/10 buggies on silvercans is certainly doable!

Hi there, I've just been having a Friday arvo run on my backyard track with the RC10 classic, The Frog an The Blazing Star about 120sqm.

Short grass is great to cut laps on and it's top stress relief I reckon

All the cars run silver cans. Kinder to the cars, vintage or Re-re, less rebuilding and the grass lasts longer.

The grass does wears a bit and ultimately I still want a complete lawn so gotta give it break from time to time and water and fertilize.

Don't have a good pic so here's a vid of it from last year

I like your idea with the pipe and the corner bollards. Plus, you just can't beat a jump with the Tamiya logo on it!! Need a pic with that tidy Hotshot with them bling-bling gold wheels!!

I love this. Your wifes great letting you do this. It's nice to have a tidy garden but a race track garden beats it hands down. B)

Love how your superrchamp handles dave. The back end steps out on the corners really nicely.

I think standard silver cans would be perfect for a backyard track. I got another hornet for when my brother comes around and we race those in the back garden both with silver cans. It's easy to get caught up trying to go faster and faster with better motors when a great track and evenly matched cars equals a lot of fun! :)
