I could not resist and ordered a nib Bear Hawk body, as for me, in parallel with many others, this car is one of the best looking tamiya models.

i know that the bear hawk chassis was used for stadium thunder, blitzer beetle and stadium blitzer.

i did some research on which chassis to get for the bear hawk body but i am still not 100% sure about it. thus, i raise some questions here, hoping for some help from you fellow tc members :-))

1) which chassis would be the most appropriate for the bear hawk body ? stadium thunder, blitzer beetle or stadium blitzer?

2) i guess the gears of the blitzers and thunder are different from the original hawk. any advice/ info on that?

3) any hop ups besides ball bearings that i should get?

any help is highly appreciated!

Both Blitzers and the Stadium Thunder are the same mechanically except the body mounts. The Thunder uses some red plastic chassis bits (gearbox and front bulkhead, I think) instead of the Blitzer black parts. Other than getting the proper Bear Hawk body mounts and installing the shorter-axle front uprights for buggy-type wheels, there's nothing else to do. The internal gearbox ratio for the trucks is slightly lower to work with the oversize tires but this won't really have much negative effect. If anything the lower truck ratio will allow you to run a hotter motor in buggy form.

^^ that's exactly what I have done , using the blitzer gears allows me to run a bz with zero problems.

as mentioned you will need the body mounts to make it all work , they are on the same frame as the suspension arms.

you can also use the stock blitzer steering arms on the heavy duty uprights , you just need the 5mm ball connectors with the 4mm style thread , not sure on a part# but they do come with the heavy duty servo saver.

upgrade wise I would look at a dt02 turnbuckle set as it is a direct fit and allow you to adjust camber easily. other than the mentioned bearings , a steel pinion is a must and I would go unis but they aren't a must have hop up.

also any dt02/03 wheel and tire combo works , unless you can find a set of original wheels but front tire there aren't easy to get.

I used a blitzer beetle as the starting platform for my bear hawk.

the bear hawk has red pogo spring shocks, red servo mounting blocks, red rear uprights, and red c-hubs.

body mounts are e5 mounted at the base in the middle of the front shock tower, and e6 mounted in the corners at the very back of the chassis tub. rear wheels are quite easy to find as they are the same as the manta ray, even the same tyre, front wheels aren't so easy to get, but I did just pick up 2 complete sets of them from Mad Ax (cheers again for those, can't wait for them to arrive), the madcap does have the same style wheel in black tho, I have seen original front tyres on ebay for prices way out of my league. I don't think any other kit has run the same tyre pattern, or if one has, it was an old kit that hasn't been re re yet. My front tyres are 3 rib jobs, used on lots of 2wd kits, and really cheap on ebay.

Front spindles/uprights for the buggy wheels are easy to get, I brought these from tony at tony's tamiya parts on ebay:

Tamiya 54154 F103 Carbon Reinforced Front Upright (/F104/Grasshopper/Hornet/FAV)

they actually worked out cheaper than the standard fitment ones, which is a white plastic instead of the black reinforced.

when I first got the chassis running I had a hobbywing combo of a 3300 kv sensorless brushless motor, with a wp10bl60 esc, very limited setup options on these esc's, just running mode, punch, drag brake, brake, and lipo cutout voltage, with the standard tamiya sized buggy wheels it's really quick, understeers like mad, can pull wheelies, but not so fast as to explode into a shower of parts almost on demand. the speed picks up when moving to the standard sized racing buggy wheels and tyres, which are about the same size as the blitzer wheels and tyres, think they maybe slightly smaller.

Can't run mine at the moment, have pulled the motor out and put it into a df-02 chassis, have a 8.5t sensored motor on it way for it, and I have just changed the oil in the CVA's from the stock kit oil to exceed 400 weight silicone damper oil.

Things to note, when changing spindles, you need to really wind in the steering links, the blitzer standard spindles are straight, the ones linked above angle in towards the chassis, as such the upside down trick to counter the bump steer requires cutting into the lower arms to get clearance for the ball ends.

last things I need to do for mine, get turnbuckle steering links (upper arm turnbuckles supplied by a df-02 kit so the steering ones don't work), and get my orignal bear hawk back from aus *lol*

Thank you very much for all the info and suggestions. I am just negotiating a Stadium Thunder deal (car fully ballraced, oil shocks, hpi esc and losi 18T Motor)...

got some spare alu uprights (for Grasshopper etc.) they should fit. Concerning the universals, I guess the Tundershot parts would fit? Tires/wheels: I found Manta Ray wheels on ebay the look quite similar, maybe I will get them.
About the dt02 turnbuckle set: do you mean the: Tamiya 53828 DT-02 Turnbuckle Suspension Arm & Tie-Rod Set or would this one also work: http://www.ebay.com/itm/3Racing-Titanium-Turnbuckle-Set-w-Tool-For-Tamiya-DT02-1-10-RC-Car-TBS-DT02-V1-/131306392956?hash=item1e92788d7c:g:H0IAAOSwDk5UJR5S ?

More on the Stadium Thunder deal later...

If you are going to run it with an 18T get some dual block tires and a set of rims 51261 or 0448056

Did you get Pargu's last bodykit?

Cool I got the other kit a couple of weeks ago. Scored the wheels F&R on ebay yesterday (3€ ), front rims even have some profile left.

Looking forward to your build, mine will stay NIB for now

looks like pargustore restocked on their bear hawk bodies, they have another 6 available at ebay!

btw. i got a positive response from the seller, so the deal should be done and the stadium thunder is mine! now for the upgrades...

thundershot uni's will work fine , you can use the Chinese ones but I had issues with them coming apart and having to tighten them up constantly, you can pick up legit 'shot unis from jasons store for 9 bucks a piece .

that the correct turnbuckle set too , you may have to grind down the rears a bit to get a decent amount of camber too.

just be aware that a stadium thunder will have a red gearbox and front bulkhead , if you are trying to go for an all original look bear that in mind ,if not rock on!

i thought the red parts might look good together with the blue-ish body of the bear hawk. found some red c parts and ordered the unis from jasons (great price compared to evilbay - thanks for the tip!)

i also found a crp 1620 metal chassis frame brace that should also fit the stadium thunder chassis.

Yeah that one comes and goes

He aint gonna get that money for it....

Btw where did you get the red c parts from ??

well, I won't pay that amount of $$$ :blink::D

I got one c-part (need 2 sets for right/left) locally and the other one from ebay (this one was quite expensive :( but the local seller had only one left)

i havent been able to find anymore for ages , my runner uses black c part because if anything does break on these chassis its the front c hub lol.

i have a set nip but i really dont want to open them and use on a runner

have you got a pic of that crp brace? didnt know there was one for the bear hawk /blitzer chassis only the falcon.

bitd we used to drill out the chassis where the 4 screws attach the front clip and use 2 long screws and flanged nuts , never broke after that lol

Posted

wow , not cheap at all, i can get black c parts for 6usd...

that brace may not work as the falcon front is different , the bear hawk/ blitzer front clip is much stronger and doesnt really need a brace.

tbh that brace doesnt seem to look like it fits even the falcon...

been wondering lately if it's possible to get the c-hubs and rear uprights 3d printed in red plastic strong enough to take the knocks...

Both of mine have black C parts now, although they started with red ones. Meh, runners. Not much worried about the correctness.

Actually, I always rather wondered what the theory was behind those parts being red anyway. Same with the TA-01/02 and the DF-01 series for gear covers and hub carriers. Odd that some were red and then changed to black. Now those same parts are blue on the new TA-02 Desert Fielder.

I think Tamiya is just messing with us.

I was searching for the dish wheels and found that tamiya offered quite a Palette in different colors. They do not look

Exactly like the original bear hawk wheels, but Seem to be a good and effordable alternative. I got some old but unused spiked tires

(Carson or reely) that should fit.

I got the wheels from Mad Ax the other day (cheers again for them) and found the fronts were smaller than I remembered, 45mm dia on the bead seats. This means the tyres I have are to big, and trying to locate more tyres is going to be difficult, unless someone out there knows of another buggy kit that runs the same size rims and tyres.

the numbers on the tyres are 45-74-20-03, I have worked out 45 is bead dia, 74 would be tyre dia including pin spikes, 20 is the width, and 03 is either bead seat width, or width between bead seats.

next task for me is to going searching through other buggy kits to see if I can find a pair of tyres to fit... this could be fun....
