I'm back with another 'Ray

One of my first rebuilds after joining TC was my DF-01 project, and what a project it was - both in its starting point...

pic1.jpg

and the fact I got hooked, well and truly, onto Mr.T's fishing line :(

After it's rebuild and a new shell (and a few light running sessions)  I sold that one on to biggamehunter, who added decals and some alternative wheels before selling it on again. Other DF-01 based projects followed..

a Top Force  that I still have - i put so many new parts on that rebuild :(

a Terra Conqueror built from the old TF parts and just a new chassis tub !

a Blazing Star that was a local pickup, easy refurb and sell on (to biggamehunter as it happens !)

So I guess there is something about that chassis that draws me back from time to time - probably its relative ease to work on, parts availability and the robustness of design.

So the latest purchase, a little cleaner than my first foray but not quite as complete looking back at the images..

No real plans for it other than resurrecting it as a almost stock runner - it clearly needs a few bits..

some of the E parts sprue (chassis tub upper plate, power switch plate)

a propshaft

a front gearbox output drive shaft and cup (although I wont be surprised if there is a missing diff up front too)

Can i rebuild it from my parts bin, without buying shiny new plastic parts ?

I dare say it won't be a zero budget rebuild, but I'm going to aim to keep it under £15 !

I thought about a crawler type build or a on-road car build but that'd mean buying a suitable body and swapping suspension components - not really economical.

Wish me luck lol!

No progress to date, other than a check of my spares box (sadly not as copious as I;d hoped after helping out  a few TC members in the last 2 years :(  - all for a good cause though ;)  )

So I've had to order a E parts sprue - so £12.45 of my £15 budget is blown already lol!

I won some new spike tyres on eBay, but unbelievably I've still not blown the budget as they were £1.75 !

So I have 80 pence left in the supposed budget - might just buy a bearing :(

In better news I do have a new sport tuned motor, new alloy prop shaft / drive cups, and new star dish wheels.

Make a wish list, maybe we can swap parts? I could use a battery clip, rear body mount and the front bumper.

Took the opportunity to get into work early this morning, and stripped the Manta Ray down - 'twas a pile of dusty oily parts by 07:30hrs :D

Nothing untoward other than a couple of slightly loose screws that are easily sorted at rebuild time.  All plastic bushings will be replaced with metal bearings.  White plastic transmission gears have the usual dried up grease on them.

All parts will be getting a good soak in soapy water over the weekend ;)

Finally, an update !

Probably got a bit optimistic starting the thread when I did and a family illness meant I've spent several weekends away visiting etc etc (excuses, excuses).

Anyway, I pulled these from the spares box..

0EE3BADA-BC46-4AAF-9107-A7DD9258A37B_zps

alloy propshaft and cups (think this is a Yeah Racing item)

metal shielded bearings

Sport Tuned motor

Alloy motor mount (GPM from recollection)

steel 19t pinion

plastic gear set (albeit Ideally I need two gear diff casings;  not the single gear, single ball diff parts in this bag)

Tamiya wheels, now wrapped in the Seben Racing tyres and foams I got for £1.75

All plastic parts were given a good soak in diluted Cillit Bang and a brush with toothbrush, metal parts largely degreased with carburetter cleaner.

Onto the rebuild, original casing and diff gears re-used for the front diff - grease with Tamiya white cera-grease,,

Rear diff - a new gear casing, old netal parts; diff built with some Tamiya diff putty for a stiff action - nothing like a tail happy 4WD buggy :D
