My little boy found my rc cars while exploring and wanted to play. So I stripped the electrics from my tb02/evo 3,brought radio gear and wheels and put them in my tt01.

cut a long story short I need a motor and esc so why not go brushless?

The brushless system in question is castle sidewinder I'm unsure of what kv/turn motor to get.

It had a 15t motor which in the tt I feel I want more power.

Which one should I go for,  7700kv 6900 or 5700kv? I manly bash with a bit of drift.

I'm open to other motor/esc combos around £100 so your opinions/ recommendations are more than welcome. I just picked the sidewinder because castle was mentioned a lot in the forums before I packed my rc cars away, that and I need it pretty quick with it being summer holidays I want to get as much rc time with my son as I can.

also it might end up in a M chassis, I'll be getting one for my sons birthday and if I like it I'll be getting one too.

Can I also point out that it's easy to fit a 3S LiPo in a TT-01. All you need are some taller battery posts. I had a TT-01 running a 4000KV combo on 3S with tall gears and that would do around 50mph.........

I'd suggest getting a combo that is at least compatible with 3S, son can use 2S, and you can use 3S :)

How old is your son?

What is his RC driving experience (if any)?

Who is the brushless setup for, you or your son?

Will the brushless setup be going in the TT01 or the TB02/EVO3 ??

Does the TT01 have any upgrades like bearings, aluminium drive shafts etc?

My son is 5 his tt has my 15t, it's his first proper rc so no experience.

the brushless is going in my tb so I can bash with him.

sorry, I was half alseep when I posted.

I pulled this stat from a post on an RCShortCourse forum:

Super Stock 19t (13.5 BL or 3,300kv max)

That's just an estimate of course.  Other than direct testing you won't be able to find a definitive Kv rating of your brushed motor.  Keep in mind that they diminish over time too as the brushes and comm wear.  Using rough numbers, if you're used to a 15T brushed motor, then I'd estimate that a 3850 Kv brushless motor might be a close equivalent but if your 15T motor has run a lot of battery packs through, that number could be significantly less.

The Sidewinder is a decent ESC.  I have one in my SCT.  Three things to keep in mind with your Sidewinder:

  1. it's sensorless operation only
    1. If you stick with the Sidewinder, ensure you buy a sensorless motor.
    2. You'll most likely want a 2-pole design.  4-pole motors have higher torque and are intended for trucks.
  2. it's BEC is a bit weak
    1. Unless you are using a high voltage steering servo (or a Savox) it's unlikely you'll get glitches or brown-outs but you should keep this design "flaw" in mind.
    2. You can utilize a "glitch buster" capacitor if you find that you're having issues with the BEC output
  3. the power switch if fragile
    1. Within a dozen or so battery packs my power switch failed.  Castle customer service suggested that I simply cut it and connect the wires effectively eliminating the switch which I did but now I have no on/off switch which I'm cranky about.

For a sensorless recommendation I would suggest that you consider something around the 4000Kv range.  The HobbyWing EZRun 10T/SL3650 is an inexpensive choice that will match up with your Sidewinder quite well.  It's $42 US.  I don't know how many GB £ that'd be, but it's pretty cheap.

However, I think you'd be better served with a sensored setup.  Something like the HobbyWing QuicRun 10BL60 ESC and the QuicRun 3650 motor would be a nice entry level combo.

A step up from the QuicRun series would be this combo:  HobbyWing EZRUN B6 Combo part number: 81030150 which comes with an EZRun-60A ESC, a 4300 Kv EZRun motor and a programming card.

What I think you should get is this SpeedPassion combo:  Reventon S ESC, Competition VR 3.0 10.5T motor and a programming card.  The combo is £70 from Modelsport.co.uk which is well below your £100 budget. :)  Note that the image at Modelsport.co.uk shows 9.5 and its associated part number, the part number on this link is for a 10.5 which is what you'd want.

There's a ton of other brands and choices out there so if you find something you think you might like, just post a link and ask.  Good luck and have fun bashing with your boy!

Thanks I'll have a look at your recommendations.

I thought the sidewinder was  sensored as it has three wires and I been looking at pictures for three wire setups thinking they were sensored.

That's a logical thought but inaccurate.  All brushless motors have at least 3 power wires.  They're labeled A, B and C.  The ESC applies power in cycles to keep the motor spinning.  Sensored motors have a 4th wire for the Hall effect sensor located in the end bell.  This sensor relays positional information to the ESC so it knows exactly what state the motor is in at all times.  This increases low speed accuracy, improves braking and eliminates "cogging" that sensorless systems can exhibit during very low speed driving.

I have to drive REALLY slowly with my SCT to notice any cogging on the Castle 3850 Kv NeuCastle motor that is mated to my Sidewinder.

This video is a bit long but explains how brushed and brushless motors work:

Jump ahead to about 9:50 if you want to skip all the brushed motor stuff and get right into brushless motor information.

what does "tall gears" mean??
