That kinda makes sense, the Blitzer only has a 13t or 15t pinion option so I can try the 15t if I choose to buy one for it, it'll only be a 15.38% increase though.

If you run on tarmac like this I suggest slick or street tires and 15T pinion gear.

If you want you can do another thing.

Buy the Bear Hawk gearset. They seem identical to Blitzer Beetle but not, they are not.

The Bear Hawk spur gear is smaller and allows 15T and 17T pinion gears instead of 13T and 15T of Blitzer Beetle.

If you will mount street tires probably they will be smaller and maybe a 17T will be a good option for street use. But you must be able to understand if your gear ratio is too high or too low.

Use always steel pinion gears.

Thanks Max, I had seen that option of swapping in the Bear Hawk gears into the Blitzer gearbox to change the gearing options as you said… For ease of use firstly I think I will go for the first option of street tyres and 15t pinion.

I just received some Dirt Hawg 2.2’s which are a little shorter than my stock rear tyres so this looks likely.

I need to look into how the gear ratio’s work etc but firstly I will see how it runs and if there are any heat issues.

Got my Blitzer rear wheels and Proline Dirt Hawgs rear tyres…..but the tyres are a bit narrower than the rim so they now have a “stretched” Euro look to them

Proline 2.2 Buggy Rear Tyres - PL1071-00

Tamiya Original Blitzer Rear Wheels - 50452

For reference:

Stock Blitzer tyre circumference – 300mm

Dirt Hawg 2.2 tyre circumference – 290mm

Too true Kingfisher, the street tyres are much more sensible and am sure will last a ton longer too.

Today's run and didn't notice the drop in speed ;p

Sorry Robb I tried a quick search but came up short.

Updates on my Blitzer, I fitted a 3300kv brushless motor paired with a cheap waterproof brushless 60a esc that I've had for over a year just sitting around....and wow what a difference in speed!

Running the stock 13t pinion and a 2s lipo it sure does come alive now.... I might one day buy a new GPS and see just how fast it is but I'd hazard a guess at 35-40mph now. If I gun the throttle from a standstill it will wheelie and flip on it's roof and roll around a bit..... rather like a tortoise in distress

The only issue I had was the short leads on the motor and esc, so two cable ties now secure the esc closer to the motor as shown below.

Yes it's a ton better... Before I could go full speed ( brushed and nimh about 20mph) let off the gas, flick hard left or right and the back end would slide round 180 degrees.... Those old tyres had semi grip.

Try that same move now with the same set up and it would turn more gradually as the rear tyres won't slide as much.

straight line start up speed is more instant too.

You would know Ian :)

Problem I will work on a video. It's a cheap Ebay non branded ESC and 3300kv brushless motor, together they only cost £40. Bought so long ago can't remember details

trying to find some different better fitting rear tyres, need 90-100mm height with 50mm width.

I ran in to the same issues and came to the conclusion that there didn't seem to be a better compromise if you want a set of 'all rounder' tyres which is the reason I ended up with road tyres, grass tyres, sand tyres and the all rounder dirt hawgs.

Is it the euro look to the tyres that is putting you off them at the moment due to them having to stretch to fit the rim? Would fitting 2 sets of 2.2 rear buggy tyres front and rear work? If you have a buggy with the 2.2 rear wheels may be pop a dirt hawg tyre on one to see how it looks and to make sure the the offset is correct. This rim would definitely fit the tyre correctly and even have a slight increase in diameter due to it not having to stretch.

Does anyone know the part number for the Bear Hawk gear set?

Thanks

Rob

Sorry to take so long to pass this on to you rob, but my van was in getting work done and didn't have access to the label that fell off some bh gears I brought a while back, my LHS had labelled the bh gears I brought with the number 9335092, is lucky I hadn't thrown it out yet lol

Yes the fact the rim of the wheel protrudes further than the tyre means when it skids on it's side the rim get all eaten away, best way to solve this is don't skid on it's side yeah yeah :P

Does your wheel stick out further than the Dirt Hawg tyre too?

I use Schumacher Vee 4's on the back of mine...

Just looked these up, very nice, do you have the dimension of the tyre height and width, the blue or the yellow tyre?

Yes, same as yours. Doesn't seem to have any negative effect though tbh.

No idea if they are yellow or blue - all I know is I've had them for ages and they are very hard wearing, unlike the originals! I'll measure the dimensions tonight, although from the top of my head, I'd say they were very similar to the originals, if not slightly wider (perhaps 1-2mm),,,
