Tamiya Trophy Truck/Stadium Truck/Short Course Truck

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I just wanted to know if Tamiya have a Trophy Truck, Stadium truck or Short Course Truck that they have released, whether it was 30 years ago or more recently?

I have been checking out the Axial Yeti Score, the Losi Baja/TEN, the Traxxas Slash and the HPI Jumpshot and Blitz.

Tamiya hasn't really dipped into this market. The old TA-02T 4wd trucks are kind of the smaller predecessors to current day short course trucks. The chassis is still around underneath trucks like the Desert Fielder. Tamiya closest, if somewhat half-hearted, stab at the market segment might be the DT-02 based Nissan Titan Racing Truck.

The Ford F 150 58495 was probably one of the first trophy trucks although it wouldn't stand up to any of the ones you mentioned.

58136 Toyota Prerunner, released 1994
58495 Ford F150 1995 Baja, released 2011

;)

and between the two:

(58146 Chevy S-10, 1994)
(58161 Ford F150, 1995)

Thanks Mokei.  I was thinking about the original 58161 when I said 58495 but that is what I found through a quick search.  I remember the Chevy but I totally forgot about the Toyota.

That's a little disappointing, but thanks everyone for the info, I am always learning new stuff on the forums from all the awesome people here.

I have to admit to being a massive fan of the TA02T series (and the later Asterion which has the same shell on the more capable XV01T chassis).  The shells looked just right and they handled OK if they were driven with the same care you'd apply to a full-size truck.  All my TA02Ts are in disrepair right now and my Asterion hasn't even come out of the box, but I still love them.

I'd love to have seen a restricted race series on dirt featuring just the TA02T trucks - that must have looked awesome.

They were probably the original scale trophy truck way back when nobody really cared for trophy trucks, and had the market more or less to themselves until Traxxas re-wrote the rulebook (and the body scale) with the Slash.  Nowadays it seems everyone apart from Tamiya has a capable trophy truck offering.

The Blitzer Beetle and its siblings, along with the Dyna Blaster, were always referred to as Stadium Trucks - although quite what this means, I don't know.  According to a half-baked Wikipedia article, a stadium truck is a small RC truck and doesn't appear to be based on any full-size counterpart.  In an even more bizarre twist of reality, the current Stadium Super Truck race series features racing trucks designed to look like the radio controlled cars they are based on.

Tamiya arranged races in Japan specifically for the TA02T a couple of years ago after the F150 was re-released. Of course handling isn't all that great and they are topheavy for being so narrow, but as long as cars with the same characteristics race against each other, it doesn't really matter.
