Inferno DX vs MP-7.5

Recommended Posts

I've got an Inferno DX from nearly 20 years ago now.  It still runs, but it seems that parts are rarer than hen's teeth.  I might have the opportunity to acquire a 7.5 roller.  The plan would be to turn the 7.5 into a working model using some parts from the DX where needed, and retire the DX.  Is this a likely option?  How interchangeable were the parts?  I know that some are not - the servo tray is very different for instance, but is there much commonality?  Ta.

It all depends on what parts you require.

To be honest just purchase the parts you need for 7.5, they haven't hit a premium yet and there's many aftermarket parts available.

Rebuild your DX and put it away as they are rare now, parts are getting really rare now and prices are going up.

Also consider this, the newer cars came with longer wheelbase, the DX is short and handles like a dream.

7.5 is many generations younger... just run it as it is

DX shared just about everything with the full-fat Inferno of its day, everything could be purchased as hopups and bolted on. My DX inherited bearing set from Inferno kit being parted for spares @LHS; accumulated its other bits as they broke or opportunity arose... things like plastic exhaust melting, screw cap fuel tank got too annoying, plastic spur chews out quick compared with metal spur etc.

If I remember correctly, the hierarchy was:

Burns

Inferno

Inferno DX

Inferno DXII

MP-Series (Starting with 5)

The main changes happened between the Inferno DXII and MP-x, as they had different gearbox mouldings, different centre support, different radio plate and a different chassis.

yeah Burns/TurboBurns came before Inferno

Inferno was released then for first time K did a "sport" cheaper version DX... which I loved as it was their first pullstart 1/8th B) there was no easy way of getting a pullstart .21 into a fullfat Inferno, chassis and motor mount were different. DXII was their younger sibling.

then superseded by the MP and Kanais, whole different generation didn't share anything worth noting

Yep.

The only reason why I'm versed in this is that one of my cars started out as the Landmax Escort Cosworth, which I turned into an on road car.  Great little car apart from the red main gear and the width of the car.  Most the times when you went round fast corners, the car would roll over.  So, on goes the DX arms and Medial Pros, which made a huge difference.  Several years later Kyosho builds the Inferno GTs.  I also managed to get the cooling fan working on a serpent shaft engine, equipped with 2 speed.

Oh yeah, DX begat the Landmax too ^_^ bestman gifted me his old ScaleSeries Nissan GTR (.10, Optima based) which I've been accumulating parts for since... haha up to 15-20yrs now.

Kyosho made some really iconic oddballers, like the OS LD SuperTen or with OS Rotary engine... wow.

Ultimate eyepopper is their Lancia Delta Integrale in 1/4 scale

Would of loved the GTR or 911 shell.

There was a Porsche up for auction, very recently, NIB with finished shell - looked mint.  Missed out by $20, because I was being tight!  Believe, I was cursing myself for the rest of the day every time I thought about it, as it could be sitting here now.  It did sell for a very fair price.

Sure was some cracking stuff back then.  Those *******els are just pure evil, especially the twin rotary!

Only seen the 1/4 scale online, it must look so amazing in reality.  I wonder how much they would change hands for?

If you're looking for anything in particular (part), let me know - I may be able to help.

Only Landmax that caught my attention was the 959  ooh amazing shell.

Took years to find Skyline R32 shell for ScaleSeries then few more years to find correct larger stickers... can't remember if I'm still needing plastic sprue. Project's been packed away in 3 different locations, haven't seen it in a decade. Original car is nitro & well-enjoyed, so shell had been chopped for cooling etc.

Are you talking of the ScaleSeries 911 (963?) white flatnose? (Very Miami Vice!) Think we did find one, it's probably built... it's electric on a 2WD plasticised-Ultima chassis though.

Melbourne was home to then Kyosho distributor who did have the 1/4 Lancia on display when I visited them early 1990s. Didn't dare ask $$$ as they'd already charged me A$90+ for a set of 4 wheels & 4 Bridgestone tyres for my ScaleSeries F40  (whole kit probably didn't cost that much more back in 1989). But years later ended up in an office with colleague who said he knew distributor had brought 2 units in, sat unsold forever then got cleared out... and he had owned 1 of them briefly. Only started it up once and ran it on road outside his house just to test it, didn't think much of it otherwise. He was mainly eyeing the Futaba PCM1024 that came with it.

Have a look at this, ebay, then you'll know why I was kicking myself:  401259927073

I'm kicking myself right now...:(

I can understand why he was more interested in the radio back then.

I tried to do a search for one of these, 1/4 Lancia, a few years ago and found nothing apart a from promotional vid on Tube, if it's the same one.

You got pics for this, would love to see it.  :)

US$411 for 959 Landmax ~NIB would've been a bargain... new they sold for a heap more than that didn't they?

Yep.  Bargain is an understatement, so rare.

I did see a really beaten up 959 shell selling for about $300 not too long ago.  I'm sure they commanded a higher price, when new.
