the only broken part I found on the whole car was the rear body post cross member, I used some Tamiya ABS cement to glue it back together, job done

Tidied up the wiring, far out I forgot what it was like to have to deal with extra wires for the heat sink :)

So, that’s basically everything back together, just time for wheels and tyres, decided some nice gold lock nuts for the wheels were in order

Although I don’t have a transmitter to suit, I’m tempted to plug in a battery and move the mechanical speedy a bit to see its wheels turn, would just have to find a battery with a Tamiya plug ;)

So the MB is off the work bench, and the CR01 back on, thought I better show it finished too, took me about 5 mins to fit the extension wire for the light bar

Ok, the “resto” bug has well and truely bitten me, despite having a number of NIB kits to build, Ikm wanting to work through my projects that have been accumulating over the last 8 or so years, next up is a Turbo Optima, with the Option house belt drive conversion.

31832394467_948a1343e8_k.jpg5046A641-D13E-4FD8-8723-A6F5006D78F2 by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr

On the rear are original wheels, on the front are hot shot wheels (black mounting hubs were just pressed onto the axles up to the original hexes, I’m thinking this would’ve almost been

The original wheels are pretty beat up, not sure exactly how I’m gonna get them looking acceptable yet, I do have another pair of original wheels that will replace the hotshot wheels which are rather mint.

The strip down is underway, this thing has definitely lived a hard life, not sure what’s going on with the shocks or where they’re from, and it has such a mismatch of screws used throughout, I’m actually thinking a lot of the crews will be replaced with Tamiya variants as it’s rebuilt.

31832393777_34fdf67d1b_z.jpg1C39577B-A461-490A-A635-1C9F8738797C by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr

All stripped down to a pile of parts, I have a lot of Optima parts (from my original Optima restoration from a number of years ago) and once all this is cleaned,  I will be comparing the parts and using the best ones to rebuild, then what’s left will get assembled and sold off as a project for someone.

A quick resto on those rashed up wheels, has return not bad results, a bit of wet sanding, and they’re close to the good wheels

I also already had a completed set of used Option House tyres, 2 of them are a little more used than the other 2, but should look ok once tyre lettering is done, I’m trying to not spend much on this resto, already have bought a body and decals years ago from Marwan, and had to order a stabiliser set, so am trying to not spend any more.

I also had a new set of bearings to suit, so will use them on this build despite degreasing and cleaning the originals, they can go into the parts car that I will sell off.

Rebuild has begun, still more aluminium rejuvenating to be done, and will be waiting a week or 2 for the stabiliser set from O/S, so not a whole lot more will get done for a little bit

Hmm, brain just had a thought, the parts car Optima (that is still in parts ) could quite easily become a Javelin yeah? I like to think I’m fairly familiar with these old K cars, but can anyone confirm if the only differences between the Original Optima and Javelin is simply the cage instead of the body? At least that is my understanding

Been working around the part that is delayed due to waiting for parts, got a bit more done. I’m using some option house shocks I bought a while ago, which are not quite period correct, but are at least genuine Kyosho parts. Think I’m basically at a standstill now until the stabiliser arrives.

This weekend I built my RM01, this was the first build where I completed the body before I started on the chassis, I see the merit in doing this, coz once the chassis is done, the build is done. This one got a hop up pitch damper, nice little car, looking forward to giving it a run at my LHS M05 track

That is a lovely, lovely shell. Is that the TOMS 84C? Tamiya really did the business with that one.

Probably even less interest than the Turbo Optima here, but I’ve started on this Traxxas Bullet, this was given to me from a RC10 guru, it’s obvious where the inspiration for this one comes from. I normally wouldn’t  start another rebuild whilst in the midst of another, but I’m almost finished holidays, and feel like I’ve got some real momentum going at the moment so want to continue. Anyway, here’s some pics for the sake of it

Hi Kym,  loving your work as always Mate.

How's this...... I tried some PS painting outside last weekend when it was 40c + here.  I couldn't work out why I was getting no coverage after several coats.  The PS can was very hot from the sun and spraying from about 200mm away, it was drying before it was hitting the surface.  I ended up with a powdery white mess and had to re-do.  :(

Moral... don't paint outside if it's 40c

I should add, I got 2 bodies with the car originally, but the “new” one has yellowed quite significantly as per the pic further up, I’m thinking it’ll go a blue/green once painted with Metallic Blue.

Ive put an Associated Stock Motor in it, and am still thinking about esc etc.

Traxxas Stampede front steering blocks and axles should be at my LHS today with any luck, which will let me run the Hex front wheels.

I picked up the parts required for the front end, decided to use the steering blocks for the Bandit rather than the Stampede, as they use an 850 bearing, rather than an 1150, which makes them not as tall. I will still need to shave them down a bit to fit into the C Hub by a couple mm, but I’m certain this is gonna work, and let me run the hex front wheels

Ok, this post will be pic heavy as I go through the process of converting the front end to takes hex wheels:

I shaved down the steering blocks so as they’d fit into the C Hubs, as I’d expected I’d have to do

46152426034_fdfc7aee15_k.jpgB36E4507-F4DE-4C8E-B7DB-4091ED97F661 by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr

Next, I needed to open up the king pin hole so as the pin would fit

39912411583_66274aa7fc_k.jpgC69A3C61-6096-4D40-A803-C836554897C5 by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr

This caused the pin to actually (very slightly) touch the axle, which impeded its ability to spin freely. By using a long screw and a nyloc nut gives the clearance I needed. The screw is obviously very slightly smaller than the pin

The next issue I discovered was the steering block hitting the C Hub when turned, so I had to shave down the C Hub to give some clearance

39912411833_aab5430762_k.jpgF7872701-30FF-407F-ABC6-809EDFB40763 by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr

The C Hub on the left is the standard one, the right has been modified

46152425534_bb31167c08_k.jpg4772F7DB-19EC-4A15-A895-C177554B3672 by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr

This gets it all assembled, but the steering throw is still restricted

Now in all honesty, this isn’t really an issue, because the buggy won’t be able to be run anyway, as it has a broken rear gearcase, and is missing the steering servo/front upper chassis brace (here’s where I wish I had the skill and means to be able to design and 3D print the parts I need), so at this point, the buggy gets to sit on the shelf looking like it was once supposed to. I’ve ordered the Traxxas Bandit C Hubs from my LHS to have a fiddle with to see how that may change the situation.

Here it is with wheels on, I’m gonna have a look through my spares at rear springs to find something a bit longer or harder as these are a little soft and lower the rear ride height compared to the front
