mtbkym01 4008 Posted January 17, 2019 Ok, the “resto” bug has well and truely bitten me, despite having a number of NIB kits to build, Ikm wanting to work through my projects that have been accumulating over the last 8 or so years, next up is a Turbo Optima, with the Option house belt drive conversion. 5046A641-D13E-4FD8-8723-A6F5006D78F2 by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr On the rear are original wheels, on the front are hot shot wheels (black mounting hubs were just pressed onto the axles up to the original hexes, I’m thinking this would’ve almost been B53EA6DA-DB8E-417F-9D42-837FF55C42AD by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr The original wheels are pretty beat up, not sure exactly how I’m gonna get them looking acceptable yet, I do have another pair of original wheels that will replace the hotshot wheels which are rather mint. 631A5798-1221-4A4B-8EA2-50A671A314AF by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr The strip down is underway, this thing has definitely lived a hard life, not sure what’s going on with the shocks or where they’re from, and it has such a mismatch of screws used throughout, I’m actually thinking a lot of the crews will be replaced with Tamiya variants as it’s rebuilt. 1C39577B-A461-490A-A635-1C9F8738797C by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr All stripped down to a pile of parts, I have a lot of Optima parts (from my original Optima restoration from a number of years ago) and once all this is cleaned, I will be comparing the parts and using the best ones to rebuild, then what’s left will get assembled and sold off as a project for someone. mtbkym01 4008 Posted January 20, 2019 Hmm, brain just had a thought, the parts car Optima (that is still in parts ) could quite easily become a Javelin yeah? I like to think I’m fairly familiar with these old K cars, but can anyone confirm if the only differences between the Original Optima and Javelin is simply the cage instead of the body? At least that is my understanding
mtbkym01 4008 Posted January 21, 2019 Been working around the part that is delayed due to waiting for parts, got a bit more done. I’m using some option house shocks I bought a while ago, which are not quite period correct, but are at least genuine Kyosho parts. Think I’m basically at a standstill now until the stabiliser arrives. mtbkym01 4008 Posted January 23, 2019 Probably even less interest than the Turbo Optima here, but I’ve started on this Traxxas Bullet, this was given to me from a RC10 guru, it’s obvious where the inspiration for this one comes from. How's this...... I tried some PS painting outside last weekend when it was 40c + here. I couldn't work out why I was getting no coverage after several coats. The PS can was very hot from the sun and spraying from about 200mm away, it was drying before it was hitting the surface. I ended up with a powdery white mess and had to re-do. Moral... don't paint outside if it's 40c

mtbkym01 4008 Posted January 25, 2019 I picked up the parts required for the front end, decided to use the steering blocks for the Bandit rather than the Stampede, as they use an 850 bearing, rather than an 1150, which makes them not as tall. I will still need to shave them down a bit to fit into the C Hub by a couple mm, but I’m certain this is gonna work, and let me run the hex front wheels 2C17122E-ABB7-4C55-8BB6-D59C1A290E79 by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr 79F36BE2-350E-4905-8766-34D954CAB135 by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr

mtbkym01 4008 Posted January 26, 2019 Ok, this post will be pic heavy as I go through the process of converting the front end to takes hex wheels: I shaved down the steering blocks so as they’d fit into the C Hubs, as I’d expected I’d have to do B36E4507-F4DE-4C8E-B7DB-4091ED97F661 by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr 19B8E1A5-E24E-4238-8616-5564F5CE9500 by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr Next, I needed to open up the king pin hole so as the pin would fit C69A3C61-6096-4D40-A803-C836554897C5 by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr This caused the pin to actually (very slightly) touch the axle, which impeded its ability to spin freely. By using a long screw and a nyloc nut gives the clearance I needed. The screw is obviously very slightly smaller than the pin The next issue I discovered was the steering block hitting the C Hub when turned, so I had to shave down the C Hub to give some clearance F7872701-30FF-407F-ABC6-809EDFB40763 by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr The C Hub on the left is the standard one, the right has been modified 4772F7DB-19EC-4A15-A895-C177554B3672 by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr This gets it all assembled, but the steering throw is still restricted F05A17BB-EF3B-44CA-8AE8-1E0A4DEF06FD by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr AA332716-8956-4DC0-B72E-956E79098775 by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr Now in all honesty, this isn’t really an issue, because the buggy won’t be able to be run anyway, as it has a broken rear gearcase, and is missing the steering servo/front upper chassis brace (here’s where I wish I had the skill and means to be able to design and 3D print the parts I need), so at this point, the buggy gets to sit on the shelf looking like it was once supposed to. I’ve ordered the Traxxas Bandit C Hubs from my LHS to have a fiddle with to see how that may change the situation. Here it is with wheels on, I’m gonna have a look through my spares at rear springs to find something a bit longer or harder as these are a little soft and lower the rear ride height compared to the front 05EEA838-20B6-43D7-83E0-D5B0E119C573 by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr D0FD3BA5-F34C-49BD-B7EE-C01B5161E401 by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr So into the morning sunshine for a couple “Glamour Pics” 5625D2E3-84DE-4F45-B779-B59A5DBEC8AA by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr 39F236DB-FD4B-42C9-94BF-05AAADB514DA by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr 41512E56-8024-45BF-B584-424A0E49F864 by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr So onto the shelf, to sit amongst its “era mates” ADD0BDC8-D2C8-4FA5-8980-FE5B74924930 by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr 668301BC-130A-469E-8714-5564415F8213 by Kym mtbkym01, on Flickr
