mtbkym01's project thread - Latest “1997 Worlds Winner - Yokomo MX-4 Super Dog Fighter”

My bearings have been resent by the seller (express post with tracking) so hopefully the Clod build can restart soon, in the meantime another little job got done today. My Novafox has modern 2.2 disk wheels but these have zero offset compared to Fox wheels that have some positive offset, so the track of my Nova has bothered me a bit as it looked a bit narrow. I ordered some barrel nuts which were going to let me utilise some wide hexes that I had in my stash

So here are the before and after pics, then some comparisons with an original, I’m happy with the outcome, it’s looks far better now

Completed chassis, now the “little twist” to follow with the body

Boy the stock steering set up really is poor in these things isn’t it :D. Even with a 15kg servo it barely moves the wheels when turning while stationary. I guess it adds to the utter charm of the magnificent beast

I love the Clod Buster. Just last night I was watching some videos of mine from over a decade ago. Anyway, what you built there looks fantastic. Do you know you can get rid of the smoke of the chrome wheels easily with nail polish remover. One detail I like to do on my trucks is to paint matt black the vertical parts of the red "pumpkin bumpers". So you get the looks only going to the double horizontal bars in red. It's a nice detail. Oh, and what a nice set of motors! If you get to run that truck I don't need no crystal ball to know you'll have a VERY nice time! :D Regarding the steering, the servo capacity isn't the point. The problem is in the front servo-saver knuckle. You either have to get it super tight, or try a one piece bit. My truck goes with a single aluminum block bit there (the rear one untouched) and a cheap regular Futaba servo makes the thing turn fantastic.

Here's a picture.

Have a good weekend! :)

@mongoose1983 Yeah I figured it’s all in the servo savers, I was considering glueing them at the join, but of course that has risks of getting glue in the tube that the 2 parts sit inside, and also being permanently in place, an aluminium option seems like a great idea, will look into that

The front saver is really the weak point of the mechanism Kym. Once you tight that one (or replace it for a solid one like I did), you'll see there's no problem with the rear one. There's a crack risk with overtighting the front saver, be careful with that. But It's definitely worth a try.

It looks like you installed/ran two Sport Tuned motors. Did you mess with the timing on them, or did you just run them?

I've got a Bullhead I'm about to build, with two black can Sport Tuned motors ready to go. I might just run them, see what happens?

With the test running I’ve done in my hobby workshop so far, I haven’t been able to pic an issue with the motors at all. They are standard. I had concerns about this very fact and started a thread to determine if ultimately it was going to be an issue, which the consensus seemed to suggest that it will be fine, so far so good

No progress on the Clod body, poor painting weather here at present, been working on the bar work though .

In the mean time I decided my very first kit needed some well overdue TLC. This thing was my absolute pride and joy when I was a young fella and got used to writhing an inch of its life. It is actually sporting a fair bit of actual damage, but I’m not replacing the parts because it is going to stay original, but it won’t ever be able to be run again (got plenty of other cars I can drive these days)

Heres the before:

Will post up the after pics once she’s back together

The Fox is an awesome car. I ended up getting the re-re so I didn't have to run mine anymore, just need to build it!

What rims are you running on that Fox? or are they just the standard ones gone white?

Yep, a Wild One wheelset, back in the day when this was getting absolutely beaten to within an inch of its life, followed by a racing career for a season, the original Gold wheels obviously took a beating, so I got some plain ones. Tyres are "Copy" CAT that were the go to tyre back in the 80's

She's all done, carefully stripped and rebuild. This thing is quite rough, so I just cleaned it all, and rebuilt with all the original parts. I replaced some of the hardware that I had changed over its life back to original sizes/styles etc, by filling the screw holes with CA, then cutting new threads. Gearbox internals were mint, as it got new gears about 10 years ago. Pulled the BZ out of it and put a silver can back in as sadly this one could not be run anymore, its now officially retired. I'm excited to see it all cleaned and sitting proud on the shelf. Hope you guys like how it turned out.

I've fitted a new painted but original driver figure as painted earlier in my thread, and an original body and decals that is used but not very much. I also rummaged through my selection of tyres to find some better tyres, but the same style as I used back then and found some good ones. Let them sit overnight coated in glycerine to freshen them up too

I like that black Fox, Kym. :y: And I rarely like cars with black wheels. Stands out nicely. And Foxes are definitely eye-candy, do you know that ;)

Thanks Mat, no I don’t think I’ve got a white end bell, I don’t recall my original being white TBH. The “Hobby workshop” is fantastic mate, it’s feels like a proper place for my collection, so I’m finding motivation to get them up to standard again, hence the work on the Supershot and now a couple Fox’s over the last few weeks, as well as the big beastie Clod.

Thanks Erich, yep she’s a blacked out version mate, Black Sports Tuned in her too. Yep I don’t think it’s any secret that I’m a bit of a fan of Foxy Lady’s 😂

Ok firstly, wow, had to scroll through 36 pages to find my thread, I know I’ve been busy and haven’t really been on TC a whole lot during this busy time. As for the Black Clod, it’s not progressed any further yet, as it’s just body work to do, I really need a decent chunk of time to be able to get it done, so in the meantime, I got another project completed.

I had a “Frewer” Mini Copper body that I painted up to use as a runner shell on my Monte Carlo M05, but I basically just leave that looking good on the shelf (like most/all my collection) so having a spare body just ends up annoying me, so a little while ago I grabbed a Sakura M4 (4wd M chassis) for a very reasonable price.

50073441748_d78ea9d610_k.jpg

Manual looks to be photocopy A4 paper, rather than printed 😂

50100240772_680f4306be_k.jpg

The gears are moulded and still sitting in sprues

50100014911_e6d621cded_k.jpg

The kit did build quite well I felt, being a basic FRP chassis belt driven 4wd, just shrunken down to m chassis dimensions, with the ability to build at the different wheelbases as per Tamiya’s M chassis bodies. I obviously built mine at the shortest option to suit my Mini Cooper body

50103774067_c133301b53_k.jpg

For electrics I grabbed an old Novak 17.5 sensored brushless motor that I’ve had for a few years, and matched it to a TLBE ESC. Fitted a really big pinion, low profile servo, and HK 2.4ghz radio gear

50103774147_84a6d61867_k.jpg

50102966158_97fa971c44_k.jpg

Upgraded to alloy hexes, I do this on all my builds, to me it’s like bushings v bearings, a no brainer IMO

50128725221_059cb81cca_k.jpg

Mucked around with body posts to suit the already drilled body, did have to drill new holes at the front of the body, so covered the old ones with some stickers

When built to 210mm, only a shorty battery will fit, which is ok as I have a couple (well 4) that I use for 1/10 racing

The 17.5 and 30T pinion has this thing moving ridiculously fast in the street, but is enormous fun to drive.

M4 looks great, Kym! How does it drive?

Might delve into one of those and/or a Carten 210 when I get over my Tamiya M-Chassis addiction 😁

It’s very lively mate, probably to fast with the big pinion in reality, but it drives very well being 4wd, especially for the money. I’d like to get it onto a proper track and set it up a bit and see how well it would go, but even in my street it feels pretty good, feels like it hooks up, and hangs on pretty well in corners. Think these are 22 shore sweep tyres, I’ve also got a set of 30 shore as well, but pretty sure I put the 22’s on.

Welcome back. Mini looks cool, and its got 'Postal Racing' written all over it.

Page 18 has the new track layout. Do as many laps as you can in 5 minutes, send @TurnipJF a PM with your results and he announces them all together by a specific date so you don't know where you came until then. (8th of November in this instance)

All for fun no prizes, just bragging rights.

Just had a look at that thread, looks great, time will be my issue right now. The spare time that I have at present is taken up with 1/8 racing, but hopefully I can have a crack soon

The Black Clod is on hold (Covid shut downs world wide have affected my LHS in getting me the paint I’m after, expecting paint is in the same Tamiya order to AUS as my XV01 LD), and another lockdown in my state lead me to getting out the SR kit, along with a few hop ups that I got ready to build it. I’ve had the body for this prepared for ages as it was from a TL01 kit that I used for the Mustang that is featured a bit earlier in the thread. Anyway onto the pics:

Just the typical hop ups for this, won’t be many build pics, we’ve all seen plenty of TT02’s.

more to come......

These weren’t easy to fit, dunno if there is a trick but got there in the end, then realised that I put the front discs on backwards, so had to fix it after these pics were taken

that subby is looking really good. I have the same disc brake setup and found them difficult to install and not even sure they are right. I'm keen to see how you find them when running the car.
