mtbkym01's project thread - Latest “1997 Worlds Winner - Yokomo MX-4 Super Dog Fighter”

Recommended Posts

Another day, another job ticked off the list. I bought this Falcon from fellow member KalEl63 back in 2012 looking like the first pic. A nice clean looking livery. I made a largish decal order from MCI a little while ago, and while sorting through some of my stuff the last few days, found I ordered some Falcon decals in that order. My plan was to get hold of another body and do something else, but I thought this body is brand new, so will apply the decals to it.

Now it’s looking like this (Don’t think the decals suit the colour, but I like the box art decals being on my cars)

(excuse the poor photos, seems the Pearl White over exposed in the sun?)

Now for some opinions, does this need yellow CVA’s or should I stick with the black ones?

Yellow, White or even red shocks would look good on there too but the black set it off as well, can't lose!

Found these laying around, and after seeing how the Monster Beetle shocks came out, gave these the same treatment. Not even sure what they’re off of, they were built with travel limiters in them, which I left out, and wow they are extremely long :o

Guess who’s back at work, and not having time to do much :(

Hoping to have some parts come in for the Turbo Optima this week, so some updates to follow

Update time, back onto the Turbo Optima. My stabiliser kit came in which is a new release from Kyosho for their legendary series Optima/Javelin, but is almost identical to the original (the front bar is slightly different shape on the original.)

But firstly, lower chain/belt guard and lexan cover in place

Also, I’ve got some big plans for all my left over parts, and wanted to keep the 2 chassis TVP spacers that I have for that project, so my LHS had some parts from a HPI Savage that I thought I could use. I shortened the parts and tapped new threads, one is cylindrical and one is hex shaped.

The larger diameter one is the HPI part

Bit more done today, all that needs to be done for this one is:

Wire up and install brushes on Motor

Find a suitable ESC

Paint and install body

Dont even know what the yellow “spray spots” are from. I did have a canary yellow 1/1 car as my first, I may have needed to touch something up, so test sprayed it on my poor old Big Bear

Typically the front body mount is broken, I seem to recall using a large square of foam rubber taped on the inside of the body to keep it off of the front wheels/tyres, it used to bounce around all over the place

But wait, there’s more..........

Ive been on the lookout for parts for a number of years, knowing that I’d be working on this at some point. I got this lot below (from Alex “incredible-serious”) about 8 or so years ago, and basically never opened the box, as I moved house straight after getting it, and it just got left alone

So without actually stocktaking everything in there at this point, it seems there are another 2 trucks in the box. Will break everything down, clean it all up, use what I need to, and re assemble what’s left and probably list it all for sale (Other than my rebuilt original - that ain’t going anywhere)

And just in case you need some inspiration for nonboxart colors here's a picture from 1977 that I believe will come handy ;)

While my original “multi-coloured” body is letting the Mr Muscle oven cleaner do it’s thing, I decided to tear down the chassis.

So the tyres aren’t as good as I thought and hoped :(

Ive been through them all and found atleast 1 suitable set, which are all soaking in some WD40 to see how they rejuvenate. Unfortunately none of them would survive running of any description, but some are probably ok to sit on the shelf. A couple are totally stuffed though.

Teenage engineering at its best here, wires twitched together and electrical tape insulated from the motor to the Original Fox mechanical speedie. I recall I got an ESC for my Fox, and this speedie was better than the stock Marui item, so I figured I’d fit it up to the Big Bear :D

The gearbox looks intact, so will be subject to degreasing and reassembly. I’d say that is 30+ year old Tamiya Molybdenum Grease in there.

Small update, the oven cleaner has been doing its thing to the body, and I dug out  a couple NIP bits that I’d accumulated previously

Ready for sanding, the oven cleaner wouldn’t budge the yellow spots.

So way back I remember this truck had major steering issues, popping ball cups at will, So back then I was attempting “something” and hacked into the chassis just behind where the tie rods pass (forgot to take a pic before I started repairing it.

You can see here the part of the chassis that is missing, compared to one of the other I have here

I’m gonna paint the chassis satin black, so hopefully this repair turns out ok

The Marui 480RS is still in pretty good condition, and will be quite at home back in the gearbox. I’ve fitted some modern 3mm bullet connectors and got it installed back into the rebuilt rear end

The bad news is the tyres are basically all not useable, trying to fit them onto the rims, and they’re tearing at will, so I’ve seen people use lunchbox/WW2 tyres on the original rims. But this requires modifying the rims to suit. So I’m looking for opinions here, do I cut the rims down to suit the smaller tyres?

For heaven's sake don't destroy the rims!

If that was my truck I'd display it with the original tires, and I'd only test-run it the day I come across a nice set of tires. If you cut the rims, and you happen to find a nip set of tires later I'm sure you'll regret ever doing so. Avoid such heartache if possible.

Yep I’m with you Erich, I’m not gonna give up on the tyres, they’re now resting after a silicone coating, hopefully I can actually get them on the rims without tearing.

The tyres are what make the look of the Big Bear, and it’s how it needs to look imo. I ain’t gonna give up. Once I’ve sorted everything else out parts wise, I’m gonna PM you B)

I can not stand the sight of a Big Bear without the original tires. They're big part of the charming look of the truck.

Keep up the good work, I am loving your updates. Thumbs up! :)

And some more work done to the Big Bear. I’ve very gently fitted a set of original tyres onto the rims (minus the lock rings that sit inside the tyre, as these put too much pressure onto the tyre and tear just trying to fit them). I plan on continuing to keep these tyres sprayed with silicone so as they don’t deteriorate any more than they already are.

Electrics in while the paint dries, I’ve fitted an ESC into it, although this won’t be able to be run on these tyres, if I find some other options to run it gently some time, I wanted a reliable ESC in there.
