brushed v brushless in rerelease supershot

I have a re release supershot which has the standard esc and a brushed 540 motor (what came in the box). I also have a vintage boomerang that will probably need an esc and new motor as the mechanical speed controller and motor are shot (I think). so my thinking was this, put the supershot kit esc and motor in the boomer and get a brushless motor for the supershot. now I don't want to put to much power into the gearboxes and shred the diffs/gears but I want to give it as much grunt as the standard boxes will handle. I am not going to race them, I am just going to be having a bit of fun driving them with my son.

so is it worth the effort (and cost) to go brushless or should I just stick with a good brushed motor?

Brushless is more efficient than brushed, but not necessarily faster or more likely to destroy your gearbox. It comes down to motor choice and how you set up your ESC. If you choose a high turn motor and keep the timing set to zero, I see no reason not to go brushless. It would give you longer runtimes with less maintenance than brushed technology.

I second that, TurnipJF. If you stick to a brushless motor within the range of 13.5 to 17.5 turns, you should have no problems whatsoever.

Do you have a TBLE-02S ESC in your Supershot?? If so you will need a Sensored brushless motor..

The TBLE-02S is only rated for a 10.5 BL motor, and that is with the optional cooling fan fitted.. I do have some concerns as to if there will be sufficient airflow to keep the TBLE-02S ESC cool when placed in the belly of a Supershot chassis.. Maybe it would be better to put the TBLE-02S in the Boomerang where it will have better airflow..?

As for brushless motors, I would suggest checking out the Trackstar Sensored  brushless motors from HobbyKing.. These should be available from the Australian warehouse in Sydney..

You can also buy the Trackstar motors with as a motor/ESC combo which may be useful for your Boomer.. Unfortunately these are not available from the Australian warehouse.

I used an eZrun 4000KV 10.5 turn combo in my re-re hotshot running 2S LiPo without any issues. It's old 2 pole motor tech now, but a good setup if you can get one cheap.

Driving style will also have an impact on the life of the transmission just as much as motor you are using. Harsh braking and acceleration, jumping without releasing the throttle on landing, spinning up the diffs, etc will all reduce the life of the transmission.
