Tamiya Club Official Top 10 Fastest RC'ers List

Recommended Posts

UPDATED - 6th May 2019

If I miss someone's post for a top speed run that hasn't been updated in the table below contact me.

To enter please Include the following information when you submit a Speed Run Entry:

1)  Model of your car and which CATEGORY it is going into - ( Silver Can /   4WD / Front Wheel Drive / Rear Wheel Drive)

2)  The top speed in MPH and KPH.

3) Your car’s set up including: Motor, ESC, Battery, Gearing, Tyres

The Rules:

-  Each member can enter as many cars as they want but only 1 car will be entered per member on the 'Overall Fastest Tamiya' category.

-  Speed Runs will be accepted if shown on video - Please see below for acceptable methods:

-  On Board GPS - This shows the car at a standstill with a GPS device mounted showing 0 mph/ 0 kph, then show the car go on it’s speed run and come back to show the GPS recorded speed.

Radar Gun - Or they can be filmed going past a handheld Radar gun showing the top speed.

-  On Board FPV video with speed displayed on the screen.

-  Speed Runs must have the bodyshell mounted on the Chassis - This can be the Original Tamiya shell or a lexan/hardbody aftermarket one.

-  To Qualify for a Tamiya Category you must use Original model specific gearbox casings and internals , Tamiya High Speed Gearsets are allowed and aftermarket internal gears that fit in stock Tamiya gearboxes and on stock gear shafts are also allowed.

However - if you modify a Tamiya RC with a 3rd party gearbox, modify the stock gearbox in any way ( holes or drilling to accept different gears not intended for that chassis) or custom make a gearbox yourself, you will be entered into the "Custom Modified Tamiya RC" Category.

SILVER CAN ENTRIES - You MUST show the Silver can in the speed Run Video.

Sounds like fun, but might I suggest a bit of flexibility regarding the"proof" video since different people use different ways to measure their car's speed? For example, one using the radar gun approach might involve a clip showing the car passing the gun operator with the speed readout clearly showing in the frame, one using a FPV system with GPS-linked OSD might simply involve a view from within the vehicle with the OSD readout visible, one using a good old-fashioned time-over-a-measured-distance approach might involve a continuous video showing the measurement of the distance, the run of the car and the stopwatch times recorded, etc?

Basically, I think it should be open to people using any reliable and verifiable means of speed measurement, not just GPS.

Yeah people always ask me how fast my Cat K1 is and I tell them I'd be happy to tie their phone on it to find out - no takers yet

I'd have to buy a gps device first. I wanted to do some speed runs to see the difference when I upgrade anything. Then I had the smart idea of downloading a gps app on my phone, it'll be free! :D But it hit me. Do I really want to strap a £750 phone to my rc car if it all goes #$*@ up? Nope! :lol:

So I'd love to join in when I get a chewp gps device. I think this will be fun.

Yeah this sounds like fun - I agree a little relaxation on the 'rules' since it seems that this should really just be about having 'fun' afterall, not some form of competition. If Joe bloggs wants to tell everyone his TT01 with cheap brushless can go 60mph then fair enough - he is only kidding himself at the end of the day.

I think it would be fun to do some theoretical top speeds too - based on gearing, maximum motor rpm and wheel diameter this can all be calculated. Suffice to say, it would be interesting just to put this info into a spreadsheet. This would also serve to disprove the TT01 pub talk bloke who will inevitably make an appearance sooner or later!

I cracked my iPhone 5 screen a couple years back doing just that, cost me £200 to replace so never again!

Ok guys I've read ur comments, I'd like to keep the Video evidence thing to keep it a true list and beyond doubt. It's surprising how these little cars can bring out the not so nice big kid in some people, I've seen it on other forums ( where I got this idea)... Everyone says it's just a bit of fun ( which it is) but then they can all too easily get all irate when a photo appears showing 100mph GPS reading on a Honda City Turbo!

And because no one wants to call the member posting it a 'fibber' they manage to get onto the top speed list and knock a genuine person off... It leads to tension lol.

If there's a lot of calls for a relaxing of the video I'll reconsider.

I will relax the GPS thing, if someone has the radar gun on film that's acceptable, I've seen some good videos using this method.

And if someone can get FPV with a speedo on screen that'll be accepted too.

Not too sure about the time and distance method though because there's no way to confirm the distance is correct without a walk through which gets too long winded.

Nito my GPS is a SKYRC GPS from EBay for about £40-£45... Usually shipped from China but a cool little device built just for this sole purpose.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131374875292?redirect=mobile

so there it is guys... Get your thinking caps on, especially about the Categories so far, any to add, any to remove?

Here's the first entry to get the ball rolling

Blitzer Beetle doing 27.3mph entered into the 2wd buggy section... I'm top woohoo!

Well, I don't have an official speed readout, but this is my fast (ish) ;) gravel hound:

It's running 3S 4000maH LiPo, Ezrun 4000Kv 8.5Turn motor, EzRun 70A ESC, can't remember the gearing but I think I had a TT-01 speed spur gear installed, apart from ballraces and an aluminium centre prop, it's a standard car. I seem to remember from timing it over a measured distance of 50m it was doing just over 50mph.

It's not intended to be an 'official' entry as I don't have a measured speed displayed on it, but you can see from the video that it's 'reasonably rapid'

Enjoy ....

2WD touring/rally doesn't exist as far as I can tell -- maybe change that to 2WD pan car (RM01, Group C, F103/F104 for example).

MadInventor that's a great video, awesome slow mo crash showing a full 360 degree spin right into your path lol.. That Gravel Hound really gets among the gravel on the ground!

That Gravel Hound is a 2wd buggy on the DT-02 chassis right? Like the Holiday Buggy? Hmmm its rapid for sure but 3s with 4000kv would be :)

Speedy, thanks just changed that category now :)

Yes Cody go get that Frog souped up and let it riiiiiiipit!

I'd say the FF series of chassis would certainly be covered by 2WD touring car.

Great footage Mad Inventor!

Gah, just when you think you have a handle on costs for this hobby!!

(Do I pay a tenner more to get the Skyrc immediately from Modelsport and make the basket up to £100 for free delivery because I can use a new receiver and speed controller?...gnnnn must resist - pointless!)

I like the idea of trying this wihtout using my phone....what GPS devices are out there/worth looking at?

When I was trying to max out the gravel hound, I fitted a GoPro in it's 'outdoor case' to it, then drove it flat out over a measured 50m which was marked on the ground. I was then enable to accurately time the run using video editing software and the timestamps on the frames to work out the average speed over the distance.

The GoPro is not cheap, but much more robust (and cheaper) than a mobile phone. It survived the crash it filmed in the video I posted earlier and went on to continue working perfectly. You also get great on-board footage into the bargain :)

This is me ;)

I found mine ran much faster when you replaced the NimH with dynamite, more bang for the buck :)
