Not bad for a novice eh.

Did cut the video short though as car did take a few knocks and flips lol.

Not bad at all that was a great run! You are only 1MPH away from my 2wd DT02 run, very impressive with the added drag of 4wd. What brand motor are you running?

Nice one ! Cheers dude.

The motor and esc are an ezrun copy from ebay / Hong Kong cost £27.99 and took about 2 weeks to get to me.

Official entry

Tamiya Thunder Shot (Super Dragon body)

4x4

Boomerang front wheels & tyres. Thunder Shot family rear wheels with unknown tyres.

17t pinion

4300kv motor & 3s lipo

50.3mph, 80.9kph

Quite an interesting session. It first ran 38.5mph with the 2s, exactly the same speed as it did on tarmac, so that sand is quite good (a long as you have good suspension!)

The video shows most of the rest. We got that 44mph on first try but couldn’t better it for ages. It just took off every time, I think it’s the front bumper, it’s quite big with no holes & is probably bent back more than it should be at about 45deg. (If you stick your hand out of a car window holding it flat at 40+mph & change the angle it can get pushed up with quite a force). The last back flip broke a front up right, but luckily it was on the parts tree from the last breakage & I had that with me.

I tried making a front spoiler out of card next, but when the front lifted in the big crash the rear wheels just lifted too & spun so fast the outer bead got ripped of one (I did try re-gluing it when doing the repairs but it can’t have had time to dry). With only the inner bead glued the outer came off & pulled right up to the inner when hitting full speed making that tyre balloon much more than the other.

My boy declared it was undrivable like that, so I had a go & found he was right. But after a good few more crashes (breaking off the card spoiler) the outer bead ripped off the other rear tyre so that kind of evened it up & I got 49.9mph. Not to be out done my boy took the controls again & did that run at the end of the video.

I’m not sure how the front stopped lifting. It may have been a bit of tape left from the card spoiler helping disrupt the air flow under the bumper. Or the ballooning rear tyres lifted the rear enough to push the front down. Or the pack was going off a bit by then, but it still did the highest speed like that so I think it must have be something to do with the aerodynamics. It really seems as you push past 40mpg the aero plays a much larger part...

AwrsomenessAndy... the 50 MPH club is now open for you... you’re right about aerodynamics over 50... same goes for the old guys too hehe. Will update after the footy is over!

Great thanks, it’s very good fun all this, we have been having a blast!

We will experimented a bit more with Thunder Shot before putting the motor in anything else. I don’t know that there is more speed, but’ll try with different tyres, the bumper strapped down flater & I have an old MK3 Escort RS turbo body that could be made to fit, it would be interesting to see what effect it has running with that on.

Edit:

I’m really missing that massive open beach already, I forgot how much space you need to get passed 30mph, never mind back up nearer 50mph!

In more boring news I found with the original Thunder Shot wheels & tyres the 2s top speed drops from 38mph to 34mph. There is only a few mm difference in overall dia of the Boomerang tyres to those. I have one other set of CC-01 wheels & tyres that are the same dia as the Boomerang one so need to wait for the rain to stop to test them.

Official entry:

GF-01

4x4

Stock everything less wide rear suspension.

20t pinion

4300kv & 2s lipo

22.9mph or 36.8kph

Not been having much success with speed runs since leaving that nice beach, this one included!

I think this may have actually run better on the sand, it was just impossible to drive at any speed with the 3s on a good grippy surface, it was better on the bad surface of the carpark, but still only managed a best of 21mph with the 3s. The GoolRC setup is lovely & smooth so its not an issue of uncontrollable  wheelies but it just darts off suddenly to one side as you  accelerate on the grippy surface.

Last week we spent quite a while trying to work out why the previously very good Thunder Shot wouldn’t go straight while trying different wheels, I was putting down to the different tyres till I found we’d lost a pin out of the inner end of the front drive shaft!

What is the name of the speed recorder you're using? I keep breaking mine and am looking for cheaper or smaller alternatives.

Hospital trip?

Yup a trip to A&E but luckily no broken bones!  He did not get much sympathy at the hospital when he told them he got run over by a toy car :D  The sad part is another GPS is in silicon heaven and it appears that the older Forerunner prices have gone up since the last time one passed.

I managed to have a go with my TB EVO IV after and had a good test pull but a big crash on the record attempt.

To get a marker in the sand and to keep Jason busy here's the test run (crash footage at end) as a 4WD entry:

Tamiya TB Evo IV
83.7Mph - 134.7Kmh
Castle Mamba Monster X
Castle 5700kv Motor
6000Mah, 65C, 4S Lipo
48dp, 60t Spur/ 50t Pinion
Exceed Foam Tyres (38sh)

Nice to see you exceeding the 3s rating on the 5700kv castle @El Dougo, I'm sure you can squeeze another cell or 2 in there somewhere 😁

I learned from the best of them :D  Anyway I'm pretty sure that the 1406 series motors just have a max RPM rating

You got anything big planned?

Accident and Emergency, he has some blue toes but other than that he's fine. The EVO run was shot after the trip to the Hospital, you can see him moving in the Video when the car heads towards him.

Let's see it bud, that's 3 of my cars faster than your TA04 :D  I'm sure that next time out @Hyperlite will be taking your FF01 title too .   Big congrats on reaching 1000 subscribers and Atwood ripping your IP off, really awesome work
