Help needed please I did a swap a few weeks ago I swapped a TL01 Subaru Impreza for a Ford Ranger XLT.

Now from what I've been told the chassis is quite likely to be a MK1 Rough Rider with a Ranger shell.

The problem is that I've just tried to fit a standard Tamiya silver can motor and it won't go in, were the motors smaller in the original SRB? If they were any recommendations on a motor that will fit?

You'll get a definitive answer soon I'm sure, but I think the original motors with the SRBs were Johnson 540's? I have a funny feeling they're about 0.5 mm smaller diameter or something...

How did you manage to convince somebody to swap a TL01 for a Ranger? That's some deal for you...

Yes, I believe that the original motors were smaller..

You are going to need to get an old Mabuchi with the black plastic end bell.. These motors came standard with most Tamiya kits of that era eg, Frog, Hotshot, SRB's, Wild Willy etc..

Some other motors from that era may fit.. One of my old Super Champs has a Yokomo 05R stock motor fitted, so if you can find an old Reedy or Team Associated stock motor from an RC10 it should fit, as I believe that they used the Yokomo can..

Have you got a vernier so you can mesure the inside size?

I have a pair of Johnson motors some where if you want me to mesure them

Yes the old 540 was slightly smaller. If you want to fit modern motors in a vintage SRB you need to remove little material from inside the gearbox motor mount.

After stripping the gearbox down, make a few passes in each side with a drum sander in a dremel or drill until you have removed enough to allow the new motor to fit.

Be sure to remove all metal filings before reassembly.

I've sorted the problem now, in the bag of extra spares I got with the car was the original Ranger gearbox and the motor fits in there perfectly.

The only problem I have now though is the motor and gear plastic covers are MK1 and their is a gap between the gearbox when the cover is tightened.

When I got it, it looked like this.

Did you make sure the motor screw holes at the front (pinion-side) of the motor line up with the little nubs on the inside face of the gearbox?  This is what prevents the motor from twisting under load since the motor is not directly screwed to the gearbox.  Sometimes it is tricky to line up the motor so it fits correctly.
