True but I've decided that I prefer the Rally version headlights surround though so those are stayin'. The rear end is getting the Stradale revision if I can design it the way I want it to be. As for the rest... I'm trying to see how my FreeCAD skills handle the task. I'm having to draw up all the light buckets and lenses anyway so I thought "Why not?".

..............

Amazingly, once my usual 7.2v stick pack is placed in there, my 037 has a weight distribution of 45/55 (bias towards the rear) at the moment. For this chassis type, being an MR, I've read that this weight distribution is probably closer to being ideal rather than the 50/50 I've heard good things about. Ah, who knows if this'll make any difference once this is all done n' dusted? I'm not a racer so it's all gobbledegook to me. lol

I'll be quite interested to see what you come up with for your 'stradale' version.  You could do the least work and just do what Kyosho did for their red 1/18th diecast.
lancia-037-kyosho.jpg
It's marked as a 'presentation' version.

Regarding the weight distribution, I agree with the wisdom that 50/50 static weight distribution is not ideal for handling.  Some where in the high fifties to low sixties on the rear axle seems to be best.  The thought is under braking you want weight up front but not so much that the nose plows, weight tends to shift to the forward axle during braking, a car with 40/60 static distribution will be momentarily 50+% on the front axle but only during braking.  It also is great for RWD cars as the car has enough weight on the rear wheels during acceleration to avoid wheelspin.

Then there's the opposite end of the spektrum... front-engine FWD... which easily exceeds the front tires' capability during braking coupled with having to steer the car too.... hence the jokes with racers of it being "Wrong Wheel Drive"  xD

I know you are working on M04 bits right now, but I wonder if when you are done, you might replicate the most broken M01/02 bits so we don't have to continue to give up arms and legs to buy parts for broken cars. Just wondering, might have a pile of busted bits here to send you for research and measurement needs.

Great work again as usual! The M04S looks great! Inspired me to get working on my own M04 project too.

Is there any way you could do the chassis pieces with a square hole for lipo batteries? (in the normal length or the M04S length, or both)

Thanks, Tizer. I don't see why a squared hole version couldn't be done. It's just that I don't run LiPos so I don't have any to measure up. Are LiPo packs a standard(ish) size?

I couldn't say when I'd get around to working on other chassis'. I'm still not finished with my Grasshopper, CW01, Striker, TA04, DT02 and M04 projects. You could say that I might've gotten a bit carried away with it all, methinks, but I am thinking of getting both an M01 and M02 at some point in the future so drawing up replacement parts will probably be on the cards.

Yes, most lipo's are standard size roughly. Would be good to measure up a Tamiya M05v2 chassis to see what size Tamiya themselves chose for their upgraded mini. I like what you've done with having the M03 style batteryholder on both sides, makes it easier to chose a fitting batteryholder (Quick release, fit for lipo's etc.).

I can always supply you with the sizes needed for an average square pack Lipo if you want. But I'll ask around for the M05v2 measurements.

If you could, that'd be really helpful. Thanks. :)

I totally know what you mean on that, when it comes to it, I can be of help sending cracked and broken parts for the M01/2 as it seems I never throw stuff away, even crappy parts, only really totally destroyed parts find their way into the bin.

I'm not sure where to post this so I figure I might as well post it on here...

Free standard shipping on Shapeways until 24th Sept.

Applies to orders of $25 and above.

I'm trying to figure out what parts to add to my next order. I've got to be selective as my funds are limited... as always. :(

Update!

"Frosted Ultra Detail" seems to be a more rigid material to "Strong & Flexible" and, because of this, a bit more brittle...

I'd designed some wing mirrors!

And light buckets!

There's still plenty to get done before the end of November (when I usually do my cut off because of the run up to Christmas) especially seeing as I've added a "scratch build" body to my unending project list. Maybe I should give up the internet so that I can stop seeing new things to add to the queue. :D

edit: Links not working for some reason. :( I'll try to figure something else out for the pics.

edit 2: It seems that, for a moment, I'd forgotten how to internet...

Made some more headway with the 037 shell:

22180081_1473380632752027_96377468850402

The rear 'lip' was rebuilt by friction welding new styrene into place then sanding away the excess to reshape.

The rear panel could then be cut out so that I could test fit the rear end stuff I'd had printed off. I think it looks nice.

Firefoxussr just turned me on to you thread.  Outstanding work!!!

I bought two of these body sets along with two 911 GT2 (993). (Both are for short wheelbase chassis.) while I was living in Brazil.  I had them shipped to my friends house.  When we moved to Vegas, I ended up painting the 993 body set up and Firefoxussr recreated the Taisan livery for me, .. Then I fit that body on my 30th Anniversary TA05 short wheelbase.

Just yesterday I decided to take the TA05 30th anni chassis off the shelf and play with it a little bit.. I re-checked the set up. In the afternoon while my son was napping, I pulled out one of the Lancia 037 bodies from storage and started to prep it to fit on the chassis.  Then in the afternoon I noticed Tamiyas re-release on TA02-S!! Crazy coincidence

We have scale race coming up in a couple of weeks.  This time for Concours I plan on displaying the Lancia 037 in 1:10 GT and my blue / white Alfa Giulia GTA in 1:12 M chassis ... judges will probably pick some crazy professional paint job with flames and neone but I still the 037 will create nice conversation.

Exceptional work, I'm in awe. And somewhat jealous 😁

Thanks dude. It's really all your fault, y'know? You shouldn't have shown me how good your projects looked... :D

BTW how goes your projects? You were plenty busy before. Have managed to get back onto them yet? I'd love to see what progress you're making. I've been trying to concentrate on this one project and I think it's still a long way off from completion. Perhaps another 4-6 months, maybe? (Or 4-6 years if I keep on adding new projects to the already long list :D )

Oooh. That sounds cool. You've got to post up pics when you do the concours. I'd love to see an 037 in competition.

Well here is the starting point.. I need to have a friend turn the webbing on the wheel down.. the older Tamiya rims rub on the new style arms.. then I can change to 4mm hex vs 5mm hex which to narrow the stance.

Alrighty! I've had to cannibalise four other models to do it but both of my Lancia M04 projects have chassis' beneath their respective shells. I'm still missing a few bits to make them both run-able but things are looking good at the moment.

Over the course of the weekend I've given both project's 3D printed parts a shot of paint to seal them. I used Tamiya TS rattle cans for everything (White for the Stratos and Aluminium Silver for the Coffin Spoke wheels (I didn't have any gold :( ), Mica Blue for the 037 and Silver Leaf for the 2-Piece wheel inserts) and it seemed to work out well.

On the Stratos Chassis;

I had a serious problem with the body sitting too high and couldn't find a solution to that problem so I looked at it from the opposite direction... The wheels were sitting too far beneath the body shell. Technically the same problem but I could actually do something with that one. I drew up some new 1-Piece suspension arms (something I'd been planning to do anyway) but modified the rear arms to NOT have the lower damper mounting point in favour of the M06 mounts which are incorporated into the outer suspension shaft. This brought up the rear wheels near perfectly for my needs. Although I'd planned it this way it was still a pleasant surprise when it worked out so well. The front arms were a different matter altogether because I couldn't do the same thing with them. Fortunately I'd noticed that the front wheels had a bit of positive/outward camber (something which I've never liked the look of on any of my models... It's just a personal preference thing.) which I decided to get rid of by making the arms slightly wider. This allowed me to push the lower mounting point for the damper slightly outwards as well, giving me not only a bit of negative/inward camber but also bringing the wheel upward to where I needed that to be as well. Admittedly this means that the overall ride height is significantly lower than standard but this chassis always rode quite high in my opinion so now it seems to look just right. Or, at least, I think it looks right aesthetically.

Other things... The rear shock tower was designed to bring the dampers up 1mm and forward 1mm. My eyes might be deceiving me but somehow I managed to only do the forward 1mm but not the up 1mm. If I have managed both then that'd also contribute to the lowered ride height on the rear. My stealth body mounts seem to fit well but they look really thin to me. I'm not sure if I want to beef everything up and reprint because they look ok just a bit... thin. I don't know. Anyways, I'm kinda pleased with myself on the Stratos build thus far. It's been quite a learning experience.

Pics of the Stratos build so far:

On the 037 Chassis;

I managed to save up enough funds to order another of my M04S chassis' for this project. It wasn't necessary but I really dug the way the weight distribution changed so out went the stock chassis in favour of the 3D printed one. When I did a quick mock up using the prototype M04S chassis I noticed that the ride height seemed to be ok so I figured I wouldn't bother changing out the stock suspension arms. The fact that the stabilizer kit was fitted to them made this decision easier. The only things I did differently for this chassis are the body mounts, which had a slight problem (I'll get back to that), and the bumper mount. I mentioned earlier in this thread that I'd put some extra screw points for later development. I will definitely design something to go there at some point, more than likely a front spoiler/splitter. Other than that it's the same mounting point as the stock piece. The problem with the body mounts... I somehow managed to mess up the width spacing measurements for the front mounts which is odd as they have the same spacing as the rears... which were absolutely spot on. The length spacing between front and rear is spot on too. I really don't know what I was doing at that time for it to go wrong. That meant, of course, that the issue needed to be corrected and then re-printed. So that's done and I'm just waiting on the replacements.

Pics of the 037 build so far:

Phew... I can't say why I decided to have a mad rush on these things this weekend but things are finally starting to feel like they're getting somewhere. ^_^

edit: (I forgot to say what I'd actually done 3D-wise)

So with your new bodyposts for the 037 you are able to use the stock holes in the body (that were meant for a TA03)? Awesome! Because that's exactly what I still needed to model for my M04RR-XL project. If you have them on your shop I'll order a set and give them a go.

Nice work on the wheels too! Would love to see one with a brake-cooling dish on it like the ones on this Celica. I'm currently building a replica of that body and I have brand new two-piece wheels for the rear, but the dish wheels for the front would be way cool to have. Is it something you could make perhaps?

Yep. My new body posts do exactly that. I'll be putting them on my shop soon. Would they still be aligned correctly with your M04RR-XL project, being that the gearbox is spun around?

As for the wheels... I'll need to look at more pics to get them to look the same. I'd also need to know how much space there is inside/in between the outside face piece and the normal face beneath/behind it.

BTW Thanks for visiting and liking my Facebook page. :)

Ha... too busy for building anything.  But now that you have made M04L Lancia 037 bodyposts, perhaps I'll get my 037 together by 2018.

I did try one thing that wasn't just basic maintenance to keep my Tamiyas running:
m9teG1X.jpg

The TVR came out notably thinner, stronger, better texture than last year's Mercedes mold attempt due to an inspiring method found on RCtech for making the mold.  I want to make runners of all of these vintage shells that I've collected.

M04L 037 Body Posts

Thanks, just ordered!

That's perfect for my build, i'm definitely removing the post holes.  Magnetic/stealth mounts for this beauty.

Also peeped those Alfa rims... hmmm they look perfect for my upcoming Tipo 33 Stradale on TA05 IFS build.
