Yep. My new body posts do exactly that. I'll be putting them on my shop soon. Would they still be aligned correctly with your M04RR-XL project, being that the gearbox is spun around?

Should be alright. At least the fronts will work. Rear might not but we'll see. I'm using the normal M04 bodyposts on my M04RR Miata as well with the flipped gearbox and it lines up ok.

Thought you might appreciate some pictures of the bodyposts on my M04 project.:)

As you can see, the front lines up perfectly. They are just a bit too short. The rear doesn't sit right unfortunately, but it would be an easy fix to get it in the correct place. Nice product!

Thanks for posting up pics of your M04RR @Tizer. It looks like the standard M04 rear posts might fit correctly. Have you tried them yet? And... What do you need changed for the fronts to work with this shell? Just extra height?

I've tried the originals, but they sit too far forward. I need something inbetween. I measured with your rear bodyposts on, and to work with my M04RR touringcar the post would need to move 12mm forward to fit perfectly. The front are perfect! They just need a little bit extra height, yes :)

You've got a PM. Edit: I think your inbox is full, I can't message you

Thanks again, top notch workmanship!!!

I'm going to post an update soon on the decals.  The striping on front & rear is the last piece before I print out some test stickers before sending off to the printer.

Long time no post... I've been a bit side-tracked with stuff (as always happens y'know?) but I'm getting there. My Tevo Tornado has been having a few teething problems. I'd wanted to print exclusively in ABS but the temperature in my room can't be cranked up high enough to counter the issues ABS has as it cools, not if I want to stay conscious at least, so I'd had to give in and go to PLA filament. Then my print bed seems to be inconsistent as the surface or its adhesive bubbles as it heats up, a problem noted by many who have this printer, so I've added a "Lots" mirror from Ikea and continued my printing and tuning. Now I've gotten it working (sort of) the way I want, I printed off one of the wheels I'd put off buying via Shapeways late last year...

I cleaned it up as best I could and tried on an HPI Vintage tyre and tried fitting it to a chassis...

33635851_1700902143333207_71604958000222

It fits!

On a bad note... Unfortunately the removal of the support material made the rear/inside a total destruction zone so I've got to figure out something with the support material. I've just started using Cura as my slicer because Slic3r (via Repetier Host) doesn't have the "ironing" facility that I'll eventually want to use to get a nicer finish. That being said, I can't figure out how to limit how much support material Cura puts into the slice so I might need to switch to IdeaMaker at a push. It's easy to remove excess supports on that slicer but it doesn't have "ironing".

Anyhoo, progress is slow but progress is progress, and progress is being made. :)

@VagabondStarJXF  - Picking up a Tamiya NSU TTS body shell and thinking the shell and wheels need to be slightly reworked to fit M04L or M06 chassis with proper rear motor. I was looking through your bits (wonderful SW designing!) and almost ready to pull the trigger on some of your M Chassis 037 rims.

Wondering if you're open to tweak a proper NSU TTS rim similar to these below? Your Lancia 037 is oh so close and even with the slight concave look of Tevo Tornado — somewhere in between?

Not sure of the offset for either above mentioned (M04L, M06) chassis, but I assume I could run a thin hex and trim the shell for the right look. Maybe a +4mm for fronts, +6mm for rears would work? I was contemplating some HPI Mini 8 spoke wheels with the different offsets, but would love to support a hobbyist and fellow TC member.

I'm sure these and / or an ATS style in M-Chassis specs (with different offsets) would fly off your Shapeways shelf. Open to your thoughts.

Cheers, Thompson

Thanks for your comments & for looking at my Shapeways shop. :)

I'm still having a bit of trouble getting my head around Fusion 360 but I can go back to FreeCAD for a bit as all my wheel designs are made via that... The NSU TTS shouldn't be an issue to try to recreate in M-Chassis Size. The ATS look good too. Give me a few days and I'll see what I can do then I'll try to post or message my progress so that you can tell me if you like or not as we go along. :)

Talented designer for sure

Thanks! ^_^

Just curious... Are you after that slightly stretched tyre look? I can add a couple of mm to the wheel width if you are. Tighter/tougher inserts (e.g. 60D inserts with 55D tyres) would be necessary and tyres would have to be glued but I think they'd be usable... maybe?

Posted

I've never tried to replicate the stretched look. The only instance, a few weeks ago prior to racing in the TCS finals in SoCal, I test fitted 24mm narrow Tamiya B3s onto 26mm rims and used 24mm inserts, never used that combo though. Unfortunately, I'm not really an expert here with M-Chassis size tires, rims, I guess it does appear these full size NSU TTS racer/owners have achieved this. This might also help tuck the wheels under the flares. I would say yes, only a few additional 1-2mm. Looking for a wider deeper offset, maybe with a very little stretch?

Side note: the spec Mini class race tires they ran at the TCS finals were pre-mounted RIDE Size 60 Low Profile SC36 and 10 spoke wheels — amazing amount of grip!

A lot of the RC drift wheels have a little wider lip on the outer rim to give it a stretched look. It's a very common thing now. Usually it's between 1 or 2mm wider.

I hope this FB slideshow vid works...

Obviously the first five pics are 'source material' followed by a four renders.

@studioRSI forgot to ask, do you want 4 or 5 lug nuts? I've drawn up 5 for now but it can be changed if you want 4. Also the renders show 3mm offset with standard M-Chassis width wheels. Have you got your bodyshell yet? If you have, could you check the offset you require for me, please? Pics of the NSU kit don't look like there's a lot of room for wider offset wheels... Or are you going to modify your body as well?

@VagabondStarJXF 5 lug is perfect, the renders look amazing!

Yes, I just received the NSU TT body shell and planning to do some very slight modifications to the flares and also create some different livery graphic sticker sets.

My plans on the shell
- The factory cut lines by the flares will be enlarged just a tick so that there isn't as much vertical overhang, overall diameter will increase slightly.
- Where the front flares drop down into the front spoiler, I plan to taper at more of an angle rather than going straight down. Ref. the blue Nr.327 in above photos, but I will retain the front spoiler. Possibly also fit a scale oil cooler and proper rallye spec lights too.

Suggestions

- I'll need your experience with M-Chassis as I don't have that much. If you can adjust the amount of concave to the centre section, making it less concave (slightly flatter — but still appearing to the visual eye concave), this could retain the +3mm offset, but help get the deeper offset look. Totally open to your suggestions. For the rear set, this has to have the deeper offset, could be +5mm offset? I can use thinner width 3mm hex hubs to help.

- I do have several different M-Chassis rims /tires on hand to try — Kawada (BBS style) rims, Cross five spoke (both I think +2 offset) and staggered GT01 Porsche 934 (if needed), Shimizu Dunlop D98J tarmac and some ABC tires, which are all 55D.

I do have a M05 Pro chassis kit (my first M-Chassis), however, fully intending this for a special 2006 MINI Cooper S lightweight body scale build. The M05 PRO is still in the box and will be a while before I get to building it. For the NSU TT, my intent is to use a proper M06 rear motor chassis hoping it will work — waiting to purchase this, so there isn't really a big rush.

Your rim design is so cool, this will be a fun build =) !

@studioRSHere's a little update on the first style NSU TT wheels...
After re-reading your initial request I've reworked the offset to +4mm, thinning down the back end of the hex mounting point to accommodate a thinner (4mm thick) 12mm hex. That'll maintain the deep dish look without the need to flatten it out any more than I have already.

I've now added the structural supports as well as two air holes to make the wheel properly useable. My 3D model is also modular so offset can be adjusted before upload. I can do a minimum offset of +2mm before I have to rework the wheel's face. Sharp edges have been rounded off and, I think, these wheels are pretty much ready to go (pending your approval :) ).

Also, taking a closer look at the 55D tires I've got to hand (I'd completely forgotten that I'd put them on my VW Beetle) I don't think there's enough room to 'stretch' them out for the 'stretched tyre' look. They do, however, look a tiny bit stretched already so I think they might look ok as is. If anything, an extra 1mm to the wheel width but be enough to push the tyre to its limit and give a little more 'stretch' to its look.

BTW: It seems I'd forgotten how to internet (a bit) with the last slideshow upload. How low a resolution did I use? >_< :D

Looks like you nailed it! Thank you!!

This will be a great addition to your shapeways inventory.

Tackle the ATS style next? While the first one is very much NSU TT specific, I’m sure the ATS would look nice on many other M-Chassis =)

Cool. I'll just recheck all my measurements then mark the NSU TT wheels as good to go. :)

I'm working on the ATS style ones now but there's a few variations to that design it seems. I'm going to have to look at some more pics and then try to come up with some sort of design compromise. Would you like 5 lug nuts on these as well, same offset(s), etc.?

5 lug I think looks standard for the race spec TTs, but who am I to really know!? look at the 4 lug deeper dish race spec below...  You already have the 5 lug designed, use this. I'm sure the ATS style you design will work well, the top one below is the one I'm after. I want to push the limit on the deeper offset. Is the M06 the same axle width as the M05? Looks like it uses the same suspension arm parts?

just an aside, I'm an Audi quattro owner/driver, on my 12th now (2 ur-quattros, many S cars, current daily is a '12 B8 A4 Avant S-line sport), so anything like this steeped in Auto Union history — I'm all over it! Keep up the AMAZING design work!

Cheers, Thompson

It looks like I'm starting to get a bit used to Fusion 360 doesn't it? In reality though... :D:D:D

I still need to double check the measurements on the NSU TT wheels but they are otherwise good to go so I started working on the second style, the ATS Classic style.

The renders in the first six pics look quite good, even if I do say so myself. It has been designed with the standard M-Chassis wheel width (24mm) and, just like the NSU TT wheels, it has 4mm offset and a thinner back end to allow for thinner 12mm hex hubs. Offset, at this point, isn't as adjustable as the NSU TT style wheels. I'll need to redraw things a bit in order to change the offset if I want to maintain the look.

One little thing though, which might turn into a bit of a headache, is that some weird artefacts came up in rendering. If I had these artefacts in FreeCAD then they'd cause problems in the upload to Shapeways. Also, Fusion 360 doesn't export in a format that Shapeways uses so I'm going to have to find a decent file converter before I go any further otherwise I've done all this work for nothing because I won't be able to upload them... [sigh] I'm not worried though (yet). I'm sure I'll figure something out.

There's still more to do, I've noticed a minor cosmetic issue that's been bugging me that I'll need to fix, and then there's the rendering & uploading issues to deal with, but this wheel seems to look ok so far. I just hope that it doesn't fail the Shapeways model tests when I get around to uploading.

super cool

Thanks. Along with the +4mm offset I'm going to try to make 0mm, +2mm, and +6mm offset versions of all wheels to give you some options. I'm also going to have to thicken up some of the design which might alter the look a bit. I hope they'll look ok when all is said and done. If I don't thicken up the model in places then it might not survive the polishing process, that's if it isn't rejected by Shapeways during printing. Recently I'd been having an odd issue with that happening to models that have been printed successfully before. Anyhoo, I'll keep on working and keep you posted.
