zakspeed 187 Posted February 19, 2017 Time for an update - sorry for lack of activity recently i find it difficult finding time to update this but i'd like to keep it up to date. So where I left it - I was working on the n/s/r corner.Ā Then onto the bulkhead - as water can collect here its a bit of a rot spot - luckily mines not too bad and an easy fix, needed to remove the interior first though P2115654 by Anglia305e, on Flickr previous owner had been chipping away at the sound pads - is suspect to see what the floor was like before selling it..one less job for me to do ;-) P2115658 by Anglia305e, on Flickr So this is the area to repair P1285613 by Anglia305e, on Flickr new piece let in P2115660 by Anglia305e, on Flickr And done P2115661 by Anglia305e, on Flickr and thats it for now Nearly there now - front valance and wings to do. N/S front section of sill and jacking point and a couple of small repairs on the floor. 80% there on the welding now. Ā Ā Ā
zakspeed 187 Posted February 20, 2017 Ok - next steps While I was under the rear of the truck I decided to drop the fuel tank, now I knew I had issues with this (just look at the fuel filter on previous page) plus the truck never ran right - i did run but just wouldnt tick over, i think i've found out the reason why. On the outside the tank looked ok bar a couple of pin holes but I knew the filler neck was rotten and was letting water into the fuel, but by eck I wasn't expecting what I found. And the tank - looks ok ?? P2115637 by Anglia305e, on Flickr Now I wouldnt recommend this and before you ask the truck was devoid of fuel and only stunk of anything other than fuel, so I hit it with the slitting discs to see what the insde was like. ANd this is what I found P2115638 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P2115639 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P2115640 by Anglia305e, on Flickr Basically its scrap - even if it was shot blasted and rewelded together it was in terrible condition - the worst i've seen and its testament to Subaru that this still ran, it must have been full of water. Anyways you cant just pop to the Subaru dealer and obtain a new tank - rocking horse nuggets spring to mind, luclkily a friend had recently bought a scrap truck and offered me the tank, i just had to take it off. Not an easy task especially when its on the ground. But job done and while the replacment tank needs work its far better than this one - watch this space !!! Next steps - tackle the rot on the front of the car..
zakspeed 187 Posted February 20, 2017 and onto the front end. P1063840 by Anglia305e, on Flickr where the wing meets the lower valance P2185667 by Anglia305e, on Flickr not looking good Ā P2185668 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P2185672 by Anglia305e, on Flickr so the fun bit and start taking it apart - ive learnt from previous rebuilds that it's best not to strip in one go and do it bit by bit - breaks the work up. scuttle trim off and nice to see factory sealer and nice bonnet hinge mounts (common problem on these as they seize - ok on this though) a little lifting of the screen seal suggests I need to take the screen out to make sure ok but will leave that for another day P2185670 by Anglia305e, on Flickr all bolts undone but I couldnt undo the bumper bolts - seized solid so what to do ??? I wonder ?? P2185674 by Anglia305e, on Flickr Rather than struggle with the grinder I took the front off in one lump to detach the bumper - much easier P2185676 by Anglia305e, on Flickr now I can get to the bolts P2185677 by Anglia305e, on Flickr all looks good - no horrors P2185675 by Anglia305e, on Flickr new valance next ..
zakspeed 187 Posted February 20, 2017 Now onto the valance new steel item - mega rare (you more likely to find a new in box narrow bumper for the kit Brat than a lower valance for the 1:1) P2185678 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P2185683 by Anglia305e, on Flickr spot welds drilled out and valance pulled away to reveal all sorts of horrors P2185684 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P2185686 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P2185687 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P2185688 by Anglia305e, on Flickr something satisfying about a nice plug weld P2185690 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P2185689 by Anglia305e, on Flickr ANd thats it - now up to date, whats left? Rear bulkhead to straigten/weld a small hole in the front floor and repair front section of the n/s sill - not far to go now..

Update time - well I left it with the fuel tank found to be goosed and the front valance replaced. I managed to find a better fuel tank but to be honest still not great but happy non the less as these are really hard to come by. PC175615 by Anglia305e, on Flickr PC175616 by Anglia305e, on Flickr Even though the tank has not had fresh fuel in for a while - i'm not welding it. I'll update next time as it's still a work in progress. When I fit the valance I didnt have my wings to hand so had to guess location, as the panels were genuine it dindt concern me - there is a few rules to follow and this has paid off. WIngs fitted - dont worry about the gaps - these are just resting in place P3040021 by Anglia305e, on Flickr Yep fits nice - happy bunny P3040022 by Anglia305e, on Flickr Next is the final bit of rot - fingers crossed.. took the wheel off and I think its safe to say this did a lot of off roading P3040028 by Anglia305e, on Flickr Bit of a wire brush and soak in penetrating oil P3040029 by Anglia305e, on Flickr Same on the threads for the adjustable shocks P3040030 by Anglia305e, on Flickr Last bit of rot to sort now - will update soon.. zakspeed 187 Posted March 6, 2017 Ok, in the main I think this is the last bit of welding, i've had a good prod and poke round the pick up and these were the last bits that needed attention. First off the n/s/f sill section, been jacked up on in the past - the outer sill was pretty solid however the inner had rotted and only option was to tackle this from the outside. In hindsight I should have replaced the full sill but at the time I only I had a section to work with and my metal folder only does short sections. Its solid which is the main thing. P3040024 by Anglia305e, on Flickr New inner sill section P3040031 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P3040032 by Anglia305e, on Flickr and welded and finished off P3040034 by Anglia305e, on Flickr that left 2 small repair sections to the floor reinforcer and the n/s chassis leg P3040023 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P3040033 by Anglia305e, on Flickr Ā And thats it - now solid again - as i've been doing this i've been scraping and prodding and cant see anything else thats needed. Next step is to prep/seal and underseal - fit fuel tank - fix brakes and get the thing running again ready to go for paint..

Crash Cramer 617 Posted March 7, 2017 Thank you, since Project Binky hasn't posted in some time, I enjoy your work too, just no cheeky comments and video to go with yours. That is some work, but I now wonder, how do you know the "new" tank isn't rusty inside as well, we didn't get to see the inside of that, but I am sure you are doing this thoroughly. Keep it up.

Ā Many thanks do appreciate that, to be honest as kid I was always taking things apart and trying to fix them (often without success!!) When Tamiya came along I was like a kid in a sweet shop. It was building/running/racing/fixing Tamiyas that made me progress into 1:1 cars. I do envy people with modeling skills who can make items/or do the detailed painting etc. I wish i could do that.. I remember when I first saw project Binky and I binge watched it - I do miss the updates myself, i'm no good with IT and cameras etc - A big hammer is more my thing !! so glad you like these updates but dont expect any videos or wit !!!! Ā Regards the fuel tank - i've had a good nose inside and it's near perfect, the holes are from the outside in. I've managed to lead load them and i'm currently sealing the tank with POR-15 tank sealer. I'm hoping this will work - watch this space. As I type my brush sealer has just arrived from Dinitrol so thats the next job when I go down.
zakspeed 187 Posted June 9, 2017 Update time - Been a busy bee since last time so here goes. Anyways I started on the brakes new rear disc conversion P4080173 by Anglia305e, on Flickr new linesĀ P4080187 by Anglia305e, on Flickr New calipers/discs/pads/brake lines on both sides P4080186 by Anglia305e, on Flickr all bleed up and working Then get ready for paint but found the screen aperture had a bit of rot so needed to fix that first P5200206 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P5200207 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P5200209 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P5200208 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P5200210 by Anglia305e, on Flickr Ā Ā Ā More to come - watch this space
zakspeed 187 Posted June 9, 2017 So then with that done, back on its wheels and get it running - which it did (not great) but it runs - just needs a good tune up. Probably somat to do with that fuel tank LOL. Then start on the strip down Ā And thats where we are at - it drives/it stops/ it's drafty - Off to paint shop tomorrow

zakspeed 187 Posted July 5, 2017 Sorry to bump this thread with no update but as you will guess I've been held to ransom by photobucket to host my pics. As such I've deleted all my images on pb and closed my account. I can't be bothered fixing all the broken links as such I'm sorry to say I will not be updating this anymore. As a general update the truck is still at the painters and I've collected my wheels after having them banded. When it's finished ill post pictures in my showroom. Thanks for all the kind words and all the best Z

zakspeed 187 Posted October 29, 2017 Time for a small update - hope you dont mind but I really dont want to fix the broken links so we will start from where we left off - above picture was just a test. Most of you thats been following this know where I was with this anyway so not much new. Basically all the welding is completed. I managed to source a collection of bumpers - The correct Brat ones are the second one down (front) and the bottom one (rear) The A bar is going to be adapted to fit and the roll bar is the starter - just needs the cross pieces welding on. Fitted the new brakes so that I can at least drive it. Awaiting paint now. Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā 4
