But when I assemble a model I want absolute and religious silence.

Me too. I've tried tv, radio, YouTube etc but I just get distracted flicking channels etc and don't have 100% focus on the task at hand and as a result, I don't enjoy it as much.

Usually I'll stick on some youtube vids - generally Roadkill or Dirt Everyday, sometimes some other random stuff from Motor Trend Channel.  Last week I watched a couple of drift documentaries while building my Sakura D4, then it randomly went into a totally daft 2000 film called Accelerator, about an illegal road race from Dublin to Belfast.

Otherwise I'll put on some documentaries, something I can listen to more than watch as I'm building.

If I'm not watching TV then it'll be something relaxing on Mixcloud - I'm a massive fan of ambient / downtempo / drone music, with Michael Gaida, Low Light Mixes and Evening of Light being probably my fave channels.

I don't like rock type music when building so no Foo Fighters - Eagles of Death Metal - Queens of the Stone Age.

I would go british indie so anything by The Bluetones. Or more recently Muse - Jack White (Raconteurs - The Dead Weather)

I've even been known to chuck on some ELO. :)

My build music is often the sound of wife and or kids whinging..... as soon as I hear that, it's time to go to my bat cave and pretend to be building something.  :D

In all honesty the only sound that comes from that bat cave is bubble bubble bubble followed by glug glug glug !

Been listening to the "raid the arcade" play list from the Ernest Cline novel "Armada" while working on my cars on Spotify loads of 80's rock and hip hop including the rather awesome top gun theme tune which will now always play in my head when I put a car down for a wee run.

i usually stick an 80's film or 80's cartoons on the iPad when I'm building a car

Usually the radio is playing in the background when I'm building or painting. But today I listened to Parry Gripp, the guy who made Hamster on a piano (seriously).

I have only built 3 cars so I cannot really comment, but if memory serves me correct the first one was built to the dulcet tones of "Huey Lewis and the News" back in the 80's!

The second was done to the back drop of whatever my son was watching on telly and the latest one was done in silence, or rather silence except for the whatsapp pings where I'm having a conversation with my partner.

I like to concentrate when I'm doing things like this and whilst music is great it is just nice to have silence occasionally.
