Ok guys and gals, I'd like to conduct a poll to see if I really am the only mad/odd/wierd TC member who runs my vintage cars hard.

If you regularly run your vintage (out of production) Tamiya over rough ground, at speed, modified, doing jumps, climbing mounds of earth, running thru muddy puddles etc then please post a response beginning with HARD. (Basically running it without worrying about damage)

If on the other hand you only occasionally run yours gently to avoid any damage because your worrying about getting parts or ruining its value then start your post with SOFT.

If you don't believe these old cars should be run at all then start with SHELF

It'd be nice to also add which vintage Tamiya you run as well.

Any responses would be most appreciated as I can't believe I'm the only one out there! [:(]

Hi Chaps,

I believe that everyone should have at least 2 of every model they own that way one can be highly polished on the top shelf of your reasons for divorce room and the other should be the runner that you take everywhere just for that 5 min opportunity that crops up every once in a while for a good hard blast.

I have run the following vintage originals and have enjoyed them loads. Running and restoreing are both very rewarding parts of this hobby which we all should enjoy,

Sand Scorcher

Rough Rider

Super Champ

Renault 5

Renault F22

Holiday Buggy

Avante

Fox

Black foot.

I admit they where not minters but that's what shelfers are for right?

I fall in between...

I run nearly all my cars but if its out and out abuse I tend to go for something a bit easier and cheaper to get parts for. I still have fun with my older models, driving through puddles and around parks etc. but I don't abuse them

Basically the amount of abuse is inversely proportional to the amount of time I've spent restoring it.

The only old ones I abuse are pretty much basket cases anyway and will probably end up as spares rather than being repaired if they break.

I'm in the lucky position where I've got enough models, to have abusers, sunday drivers and shelf queens[:D]

Hard: Bruiser...

Though not really 'hard' use persay, but it does endure mud and water, rocks on occasion as well. My Hilux has no radio gear at the moment but it will be ran as well, I like to get my trucks dirty.

My Juggernaut when completed will not be subjected to hard use unless I find another...[;)]

hard: monster beetle runner, of corse [:D] i havent broke it for a while actually [:D]

hardish - clod buster, i run it like its suposed to be, but i keep within its "limits", i know how they break so i try my best not to damage it but i still go up piles of mud, over rocks, big wheelies - that sort of thing [:P]

the softest ive ever drove out of all my my cars is my monster beetle shelf queen - ive drove it for about 3 seconds in its slowest speed on carpet with the shell off! [8D]

Pretty much all my cars are used soft (if ran at all), but I will go through puddles and stuff! But nothing too hard or abusive. [:P]

Though as with Chris, in general the more I value the car the more carefull I tend to treat it. [:)]

HARDLY-SOFT my SC runner is run hard with quite a bit of jumping and bits, however I do what I can not to flip her![B)]

The guys that I usually drive with call me Half-Throttle Nancy!!

However I call it strategic driving, and when we are at the track I almost always win.[:D]

To me there is no victory in coming into a corner so fast that you barrel and flip over the birm, maybe pay more attention to how fast you can come out of the turn.[;)]

I also drive my Jugg very SOFT, when I crawl with it I stand next to it so if it rolls over I can catch it.

When did I become such a Dork??[:(]

LOL[:D] (SOFT) When i recently took out my bruiser i stood very close to it just in case it should topple down the hill.http://' target="_blank">http://www.tamiyaclub.com/getuserimage.asp?t=n&id=img2700_20092004060810_3.jpg Since this is one of my favorite models not to mention it was the one i wanted most when i was a kid,I take great care when i do decide to drive it.Although if i had unlimited parts or a shelfer i would probably run it pretty hard. I do run my rc10 gt and my 1/8 scale VERY hard [:P]

Most of my runners are run SOFT-ly except some newer or ones for which I can get spare parts more easily, like Dyna Storm, Clod Buster, TB01 rally and Pajero.

Mud4fun, why don't you rephrase your question "how many run their vintage Tamiyas at a construction site with railway sleepers as track limiters?" [:P]

Seriously now, I think those terms are subjective and what one finds hard, is a sunday drive for another.

Cheers

HARD[}:)][}:)] i have been known to take my hotshot2 to the extreme on a bmx course, rolled it a few times but it flew though the air like a bird!! my juggy, i drive it like i stole it, through streams and very deep puddles and down some stairs, i did stand infront of it just incase it rolled. my boomerang, fox and supershot, i always drive them hard, ramping over sand bunkers and through sloppy mud, im not afraid to break any of my cars because i know you guys will trade spare parts and ill be able to repair them[:P]!!

Soft. Generally I like to run most of my cars when I first aquire them just to see what they go like. Once they're stripped down and fully restored I can't bring myself to running them in fear of damaging them.

More recently, I've been building up second examples of some of my cars (using leftovers from the restos) to use for thrashing....HARD![:P]

HARD - My original Grasshopper.http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=15138&sid=2193

The second Tamiya I ever owned and still going strong. Ok, so it has more hot-melt than plastic, but you can kill it and in ten minutes it can be re-born! It used to do battle with my mates Pajero, but now it gets stomped by my "King Black-head" http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.a...=18252&sid=2193 . This gets driven by my 6-year old who loves to drive it over the top of Dads Hopper! When he's not chasing mine he uses it for shifting small objects from one side of the road to the other.

Also HARD: Blackfoot/Monster Beetle with a lexan body - not in my showroom. Still my favourite truck to drive.

MEDIUM: M-chassis cars. Great for going fast but I'm not into trashing a body that I have spent ages painting and decalling.

SOFT: Any new runner I get. Gotta try them out - preferably without breaking anything. Unfortunately I often do this in my factory and there are lots of objects to bang into. Can get some good drifts on the slippery floor though.

I must agree with Sonic on this one and the best case is to have 2 of each car. When i start any resto it's always on the basis that the car will become a shelf queen because they always need a fair amount of new parts to be sourced, parts to be cleaned, painting etc and too much effort for me to go and run the car and reverse all that hard work.

After many of these projects though i've ended up with enough parts to build a runner anyway so i'd have 2 of all the cars in an ideal world. I will always resist temptation to run the shelf queens and in the case of my new built Supershot the temptation has got too much so i'm building a runner quickly from parts [:P]

The runners that i do have are run hard and with no reserve. I've broken the Fox and Astute in one way or another every time i've run them. For me the repairing and fixing of a damaged runner is yet another enjoyable part of the whole hobby.

HARD: Fox, Astute, Sand Scorcher, Kyosho Lazer ZX-R, Supershot (coming soon)

HARD: King Cab, Losi Jr-X Pro

SOFT: Dynastorm, Blitzer Beetle and other modern Tamiya cars

SHELF: Rough Rider, Sand Scorcher

By far the most fun I have is with the good old King Cab. Ive never broken a sigle thing on it, even if its got in it a DynaRunST motor.

Mildly Hard

-- Blitzer beetle. I abuse this more than my son. BTW, his comments "Daaadd, you don't know how to drive". He drives it like he's going to church on Sunday.[:I]

http://www.tamiyaclub.com/getuserimage.asp...004024358_1.jpg

Shelf

-- My Holiday Buggy because I don't want to go through the pain of having to try and repair those crazy cabin pillars made from that awful irrepairable plastic.

http://www.tamiyaclub.com/getuserimage.asp...004025742_1.jpg

-- My Grasshopper I restored that and with the price of those decals and SS rear wheels and tires, its staying put.

--My Blackfoot Well its just too pretty to drive.

HARD : Monster beetle with full hopups -chassis-thorp-Dyna teck01 etc..Which I like to do whatever comes in mind and a Frog with hopups and Technpower motor..which again is used until it dies..[}:)]

In My showrrom I have a runner RR which I couldnt run-it was almost new[:(] and now its being formed into a Ford Ranger...[:D]

Well, These are the only cars I have as runners, as all others are SHELF models..All vintage mint..[V]Which is not the most healthy thing to do..There is no ending in this and it only gets worse[8)]

Cheers for the replies folks, amazing how even the simplest of questions can still be complicated, give people three options and they want a fourth (NetsmithUK - don't complain the next time we want more options on our showrooms as you were one of these!!! [;)] )

Results so far:

14 votes for HARD

9 votes for SOFT

3 votes for SHELF

3 who couln't decide.

I agree with Theo, maybe the poll/question should have been much tighter in definition......

On the whole though I think it is fair to say that the majority would be prepared to run at least one of their vintage Tamiya cars hard and not worry about breakage and I'm not the only one prepared to run the majority of my Vintage Tamiyas! [:D]

Actually this would be a bit easier if we had a poll option within the forums like some of the US crawling sites I've been on.....Chris? [;)]

PS. Theo, there is no problem in having a track with railway sleepers as edge restraints as long as you don't hit them [;)]

Sure improves your driving ability when you know that certain death to the car will occur if you make a mistake!!

We have little competitions between ourselves to see who can get the fastest laps, this means driving at high speeds within inches of those railway sleepers but to be honest we hardly hit them anymore......

Also, if you see the answers, some cars are pretty new, for me not vintage, but for others they might be, its all subjective and a matter of definitions.

Sorry though if you took it so, maybe I didn't express myself well enough, but didn't mean you are the only driving like yours old cars hard and you are weird or something, just that you drive your cars harder and more frequent than the average, something that can be seen from the parts you stocked (500P) and break and your photos and videos [8D].
