Re-release predictions, post BigWig

Recommended Posts

My honest guess is the Mud-Blaster will happen.  Seems like a given since we already have a Brat body and the MB chassis.

Only thing really missing are the decals and a couple of body mounts.

I can't keep up. I have many already, but I'm behind on these :- Boomerang, Novafox, Fast Attack Shark Mouth, Blackfoot and Monster Beetle. Pretty sure I'll need a Big Wig too. Two of the above are already discontinued. ☹️

I know you what you mean, touring cars got me hooked on Tamiya cars in the mid '90's (have plenty of Tamiyas & HPIs) but then the re-re Frog got me started on re-releases...I still need a Hotshot, Blackfoot/Monster Beetle, & Wild One/FAV before they are gone too 😳

No prediction, but I'd like to see re-releases from

  • Ford Escort Cosworth (58112 or 58125 or 58176)
  • Williams FW07 Body Shell
  • Mercedes C-Class DTM 58139/58145 but with new liveries

Seeing as I've just arranged to buy a Mud Blaster, you can guarantee they'll re-re it!

like you said, the MB and Blackfoot chassis requires little to no modification, and the Brat is out there so an updated instruction manual and a set of decals, and there you go.

Hope it happens

I'm hoping not so much a re-re but a whole new model on the SRB chassis because that chassis lends itself to a multitude of different bodies! I remember back in the day I had the ford ranger and I put the Toyota hi-lux body on it and it (with a bit of fettling) went on!......Looked total rubbish :unsure:but it did go on;)! (Or Tamiya might totally surprise us and release the ranger with ford badges?............Oh hang on a moment was that a pig I've just seen flying past my sitting room window?

I have never understood why they went to all the trouble of making a super-scale-looking VW chassis and then didn't use it for more VW models. Imagine if they put their modeling talents into an SRB Kubelwagen/Thing, or made it on-road with a Karmann-Ghia body. Instead, they use it for... a Ford truck? Which should have a ladder chassis, solid read axle, and split front axle? Makes no sense.

I have this scratchbuilt VW Thing. I'm the third owner. I received it in its original condition with a RWD Graupner touring car chassis, touring car wheels and tires. Also, as the Sand Scorcher hadn't been re-released at the time of building it and the Maisto VW T1 Samba didn't yet exist, headlights were made in brass with chrome foil lenses and the taillights were homemade stickers. The body is a bit too narrow to fit on the SRB-chassis, so I opted for an M04L with two extra extensions, M05Ra uprights for more ground clearance, TL01 suspension arms, locked the rear diff and mounted a 50T Motor. Headlights were replaced with Sand Scorcher re-re parts and taillights with resin copies of the VW T1 Samba taillights and wheels are a combinaton of Rough Rider front wheels and Esci/Revell VW Kubelwagen wheels. Tires are of course Buggy Champ front tires, The Livery is that of the German (Federal) Army except that the canvas top should also be green.

I also have a lexan VW Thing body that I bought from Blackhole Sun. It's made for LWB M-Chassis, so it's a little narrower and shorter and of course not as detailed, but rather nice all the same. Still wish Tamiya would make a VW Thing though!

That looks very cool! Can you imagine how many different variations you could build (military, custom etc) on the SRB chassis? the more I look at your brilliant model the more I think Tamiya are missing something here!:D

As you probably know, the differences between the WW2 Type 82 Kuebelwagen and the postwar Type 181 are rather big, and though the Type 181 is also often referred to as "Kuebelwagen", its official German name is "Kurierwagen". Though the old Esci 1/9 scale Type 82 kit is very well suited for the SRB-Chassis and I therefore personally would prefer Tamiya to make a Type 181, I believe Tamiya would rather go for the Type 82. Probably more popular with military fans and as Tamiya has already made the Type 82 in 1/48, 1/35 and 1/16 scale, the effort/cost of making a 1/10 Type 82 would most likely be lower than making a Type 181.

Still, as you point out, the Type 181 would be suitable for so many different variations, whereas the possibilities for the Type 82 are rather limited, although some captured vehicles were used by the allies and some ex German army vehicles were used by civilians and typically German fire departments after the war.

I collect models of aircooled VW's in all scales, including the Type 181 of course, and a look in the showcase is enough to think of many possible variations which really existed as 1:;1 counterparts:

1. West-German and Austrian Army (all flat dark green / NATO 4-colour "Euro" camo)

2. West-German Air Force airfield vehicle (red)

3. West-German Red Cross (White)

4. West-German Post (Yellow)

5. THW (Federal Technical Relief), organization for technical support when large accidents or natural disaster happen (all blue / blue with black Fenders / blue with white fenders)

6. KatS (Catastrophe Protection), for the protection of civilians (orange)

7. Fire Department (all red / red with white fenders / red with black fenders)

8. West-German Bundesgrenzschutz (Border Patrol) (a brighter green than the army and often gloss)

9. German Police (White with green fenders)

10. Bavarian Police (White with green stripe)

11. West-Berlin Police (all dark blue)

12. West-German Army in United Nations Service (White)

13. DLRG (Rescue, afaik specialized on water rescue) (White)

Then add all the possibilites of privately owned vehicle, from bone stock ones to wild baja racers and even Pikes Peak racers (!), the holiday resort version dubbed "Acapulco" by VW, UK market "Trekker" version and so on. Lots of interesting liveries and versions with real existing 1:1 counterparts.

Oh, I need to stop now, but please Tamiya, can we have a VW Thing?

A few years ago there was a series of one hour long shows over in the UK called "beetle crisis" followed by "camper crisis" it was following a group of guy's that all had name ending in "o" like John"o", Steve"o", kev"o" etc I think the only person that didn't have an "o" on the end of his name was a guy called conor:rolleyes:, anyway the shop/garage I think was called race shack and all the guys were a bit full of themselves but I must admit the VW's they built and owned are unbelievably beautiful and one of those VW's was a drag racing thing! If you can get a hold of the series it's well worth a watch if you're a fan of VW's:D

At this point I'd absolutely drop money on a correct M01/M02 re-release, with the Mini Cooper body shell and all period hopups. However, with their current BMW-licensing crisis, and the general favoratism Tamiya has towards their older offroad cars I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Failing that I'd love to see a modern Clod. Take the Aguerieios (or whatever it's called) chassis, and put a nicely detailed and fully LED-capable Chevy Clodbuster shell on there. Appease the monster guys, and provide the scaler crowd with fresh body sets at the same time.

My money is on the Top Force EVO, more so no that the Optima has come back. It would also be easy for Tamiya in regards to tooling as most of what makes an Top Force EVO currently available.

Egress Black Special would be great. Just like the Avante had a Black. I'm sure every old model will be rereleased in the coming years. Then they could progress to Super Avantes/Super Egrets on a new chassis. Something with a slipper.

Not exactly the right thread, but:

to those who have driven or seen or know anything about a Schumacher, what can be expected of the re-released Cat? As "Masamis Cat" doesn't tell me anything. It looks wicked though!

EDIT: nevermind, there has since been made a thread for this, so I'm sure there will be plenty of info there.
