I'm in the process of building a DB01 and have just received the electronics from Hobbyking. Despite being told otherwise three times by their customer support, I'm wondering if I've got the right esc.

I've got the Trackstar 8.5T V2 sensored motor paired with a Trackstar Sportsman 60A sensored esc.

The motor specification gives a 'Suggested ESC' of 120A, while the ESC specification gives a 'Motor Limits' of 11.5T or greater for a 1/10 buggy. I'm going to be using a 2S Lipo.

I first asked them a few months ago whether the pair were suited and they confirmed they were. Then, just before purchase, I asked again, and then asked them to confirm this. It was three different members of their staff giving the advise.

Am I going to have overheating problems? I was going to open the rear 'intake' vents on the Durga and leave the front vent closed on the basis that it looks like enough air will come in at the gap between the front of the lexan and chassis. I'll mainly be bashing but would like the option to race.

I run mostly Trackstar ESC's & motors.

For a 8.5 a 80A esc is better suited. I have quite a few Turbo Esc's ( boosting with timing) with the 8.5's and is just suited for 2wd . Esc states max is a 10.5  But that is in a 4wd.

So it maybe just OK in a 2wd without hard gearing ratios. Fan & open vents in the body.

I'd be highly skeptical of anything HobbyKing says TBH - their prices may be good, but I haven't read or heard anything complimentary about their product knowledge. Common wisdom is that for a happy and reliable car, the spec of the ESC should always exceed the demands of the motor. If the motor demands more current than the ESC can provide, it won't be happy. It is like running a 12 turn brushed motor on a 15 turn ESC. You might be lucky if you gear low, but ultimately you'd be better off with a less demanding motor or a more capable ESC.

Oh, and while TrackStar motors work really well with other ESCs, I've had nothing but bad experiences using TrackStar ESCs with non-HK motors. They work, but heat up and don't give their full performance. Maybe something in the firmware isn't compatible.

So if I were you I'd get a better ESC and keep the TrackStar motor. :) 60A works on a 17.5 on-road, maybe a 13.5 offroad is geared lightly.

Cheers guys. I'm about to email Hobbyking. I'm *******ed they've given me poor advice and don't think I should cover the return shipping cost.

I'll stick with the 8.5T as it seems the best motor option and change the ESC. Their 80A ESC also doesn't look suitable either. I thought the 120A was the best solution?

Shame it's £40 dearer but then I'm finding this isn't a cheap hobby! ;)

That Sportsman ESC is quite good in fact I have one, but on a 13.5T motor. It just all depends on how fast you want to go. 13.5T and 10.5T is about all the motor I need these days.
