Lunch Box battery box and receiver issues

Recommended Posts

Hello all, new to the group and returning to RC after a LONG absence.  I just received an older Lunch Box in the mail today and in going over it, it appears the battery box for powering the receiver was removed and it is now powered off the main battery.  This still has the old mechanical speed controller.  Is there any benefit to getting another box to keep them separate?  I know these tend to get removed to save weight.  I have had vehicles with and without the extra box and personally found it troubling when the battery was draining that you could lose control of the car since the receiver was getting its power from it.  It appears these can still be bought but the only ones I found are Traxxas models, will these work? Lastly, this came with an old AirTronics pistol grip controller.  When I put my 3800amh battery in and turned everything on, it went haywire!  The servos both went to one extreme end and twitched and moving the trigger or wheel resulted in very little movement or control.  The trim adjustments did not help either. Does this sound like the radio or transmitter got damaged in shipment or something else?  I wasn't sure if 3800amh is too much for this old receiver either?  I don't have a spare radio, receiver, or less powerful battery at this point to check. Thanks in advance

As it's an older receiver it probably has a build in bec and should be ok with your newer battery.

but better throw out the old electronics and get a newer ESC, can recommend the quicrun 1060.

Thank you, I planned on going esc at some point.  I was just trying to figure out if the radio and receiver are bad based on this behavior.  Since the steering doesn't respond properly either, I may need all new electronics... One of the dangers of buying vintage stuff that is about 30 years old!

I'm sure the radio is fine,Igor be a lot of interference where you're at. If you try running it as is you HAVE to have that battery box, if you're in the states I can help you out as I have a few lying around might even have a spectrum radio I'd be willing to trade if the radio catches my fancy (I'm a sucker for vintage stuff)

Hi, I am in the states (TX).  Not sure if it is interference or not.  I have not tried to take it out again yet or work on it yet.  Work has had me crazy today.  The radio appears to be an AirTronics Vector VT2P 75mhz.  I am planning on a newer radio anyway and possibly an ESC sooner or later.  I can post a pic of the radio if you want.

Thanks,

Cool, that is a nice group of cars! I went back and played with the remote and receiver. Pulling out the crystals and swapping them stopped the twitching but then there was zero connection between the radio and receiver. Possibly one of the two is bad and was damaged in the shipping?

these are the ones the wife sees  heh

Man I haven't really messed with these radios in a bit and someone with WAY more memory or knowledge and correct me if Im wrong but if Im not mistaken the crystals are different, one for the rx and one for the tx. that's why it works when you switch them around.

Yeah, I was just doing some reading on that and they are different. Not too expensive to replace but not sure if it's worth pursuing. I still plan on getting the battery box though.

Do this if you're going to stick to brushed motor and go with an ESC.  At $18-20.... you can't go wrong.  It handles both nimh and lipo batteries too.

Thanks, that is my plan once I get the radio and receiver to actually function.  Then I want to move on to the strengthening of the body parts and maybe a light kit.  After that, it will be on to the next build!  Hopefully a Clodbuster as that is what I had back in the late 80's and loved it.

Well, I take no credit for this one since the prior owner took the time to make it look like the box art.  I did like that it has the sticker with Vanessa's phone number on the back rather than the website sticker you see on newer ones!

Hey, quick question, I have tried multiple things to get a profile pic to work but every single one says it is too big.  I even took someone else's, saved it, and then tried to use it and it said it was too big? what is up with that?

Have a look at the receiver and make sure it doesn't have BEC on it anywhere BEFORE you power it up as you could fry it putting a receiver pack and a running pack into it...
