This question may have been asked before but I can't find an answer/thread.

I have a Mondeo body I'm just about to spray in the correct PS4 Blue and was wondering if backing with white would make much difference, ie brighten the blue?

I've never backed a colour before so bit unsure!

thanks

I usually find that black or silver make better backing. I even back up white with black (after sufficient coats of white, of course). It makes it more opaque, less like a flimsy piece of plastic.

But try it first on a scrap piece or a clear plastic soda bottle or something, just to make sure you like the look.

PS4 is quite opaque once you've emptied the can, 3-4 coats on the 1 touring shell. White backing would make minimal difference but worth doing; make sure Blue is even before any backing though.

Back lighter colours with white to make them brighter. Silver & black backing can make them darker. Usually I like covering every colour of backing with PS5 at the end for cosmetics, before final squirt of PS31 Smoke.

I typically  back pearls and whites with silver or gold if I want the color to pop a little more.  If I want to darken in down a bit I use black

I back with silver to brighten, and white if I want an even-brighter colour; with white I usually do silver afterwards anyway.

If a lot of the inside of the shell will be visible (i.e.: on off-road models with greater ground clearance), I add a coat of black in addition to the base colour and white/silver. I started doing that after body post clips and battery cables began scraping single base coats within a run or two and showing up from outside the shell... though the extra opacity is also nice, and a good way to hide reinforcing tape on the inside of the shell.

For ABS, I usually do no such thing, but grey primer goes on anyway and usually brightens the colour, in addition to giving the paint a good surface to adhere to.

Primer comes in more than grey ;) pink & white too, depending on your intended colour coat.

To protect your paintjob from running wear-n-tear, spread on a thin coat of ShoeGoo. Gaffer tape or offcuts of vinyl stickers also ok if you haven't the patience to wait goo dry.

ShooGoo also good for reinforcing areas of thin lexan; some of T's latest bodyshells are seriously paperthin at the sills or around the rear. They tear without much provocation.

My hobby shop only stocks grey...

Agreed on the reinforcement, though - any shell with complex shapes at the front or rear could use it.

Been swearing at FJ40 body in recent fortnight... it's seriously thin, barely stands up on its own... grrrrr! Very sloppy work imho

some years back same bodyset in a CR01 kit when it first came out never felt that fragile

i also bought a SP bagged FJ40 bodyset too and that felt thick

I'm suspecting the earlier 2 were of Japanese manufacture <_<

can you measure the thickness (best the border you cut off that should have the raw unchanged thickness) got some shells lying around here too.

edit: measured front 0.8mm rear approx 0.4mm (two fresh uncut 58405)

Well I've tested a couple of bits of lexan both plain PS4 and backed with PS4 , no difference 😒. The blue must be to dark for the white to make a difference so I'll stick to just the blue.

Thanks for the advice anyway, I'm sure backing a lighter colour would work better.

'Fraid not

current victim is a Black factory paintjob, arrived used on CC01. (Are they factory cut?)

earlier 2 FJ40s dunno where they've been packed off to, haven't seen them in a while  CR01 kitbox not exactly tiny to easily disappear, it's here "somewhere"

Thanks for confirming thinness... wow real thin.
