Another of my fast ford builds.

Only after decaling I realized the MCI decals aren't quite as good as I though.

  • By default, the blue is the wrong color. Should of been royal blue or dark blue, not the intense blue supplied.
  • Any decal that is white, is transparent, even the yellow bleeds through

Spec

  • Brand new TL-01
  • Team Blue Groove Escort bodyshell.
  • MCI Racing decals.
  • Tamiya whale tail & mirrors.
  • Tamiya wheels & tyres.
  • Tamiya paint.

Initial thoughts here.... Tamiya actually make or made 2 different Escort shells. One for the Cosworth and one for the WRC. the difference as far as I can see is the grill arrangement as I discovered when decaling.

Different shells made by Tamiya. (note the upper and lower grills)

The TBG body is actually based on the Escort WRC shell, not the Cosworth.

The MCI decals are based on the original Cosworth shell.

Yep, the decals won't pair up  so I had to cut my own grills out of an Hpi carbon fibre sticker.

All in all, I'm quite pleased with the finish, very nice to look at

Had to make my own window masks. Fortunatley, prior to the Pilot shell I decalled an Escort WRC shell with genuine Tamiya decals & masks, so I kept the backings from the masks and used them as templates using Tamiya masking sheets.

Again, having decaled an Escort WRC I kept the backings for templates to cut the carbon grills, as the MCI decals were designed for the original Cosworth shell.

Everyone loves the Cossie.  Wish they'd re-release either the Michelin Pilot or Motorsport one (even the Repsol one) or that TBG would replicate the proper shell.

Wow, what a resourceful set of instructions. I have two whale tails here one in white(now turning yellowish) and one in orange. I think Truck Norris pointed out as well that the rear wing on the WRC mold from MCI took a different wing, but somehow you grafted the whale tail on yours?? Nice. I didn't know Tamiya made masking sheets like that and I don't know if anyone does this, but perhaps there is some white decals style sheet made that you could cut a backer decal for and make the transparancy go down considerably on that number decal??? I know that when I had mincemeat paint up a body for me with the white number decal on the side, he elected to paint the spot on the shell white to help it not bleed out, but he is a bit of a perfectionist and I couldn't ever get into his level of great painting. It was the Honda Castrol Civic he painted up for me, still need to plop that onto its chassis and post some shots, some day. LOL

Another nice build, I loved the Cossie, back in the day...  good work on the bodyshell...

Love that Michelin man on the back, great job applying that and pity about the transparent door Decal.

Yeah, the michelin man is pretty cool lol, the white decals bug me. It could be put right with a bit more cash.

The WRC and Cossie wing appear to have the same mounting plates (at the bottom) so both are interchangable on the shells. I can't compare to genuine shells, only TBG shells but both poilers fit perfectly.

The masking decal sheets come in packs of 4, part number 87130, pretty good and no blled.

Good idea on the backer decal. Just ordered a plain white A4 sheet of white vynyl. My intentions now are to re purchase some MCI decals, and while im at it change the intense blue to royal blue so hopefully the blue stripe bits down the side will match the PS4 better. I'll just redo both sides with any decals that get removed to make the chages.

It's no wonder TBG sell plenty of the escort bodies when the Tamiya body sets cost more than gold, a decal set sold recently on eBay for £110😲

Escorts best in red 👍

The original Cosworth shells have recesses halfway down the back window where the spoiler mounts at the top (you can see just about see in Sven's pic above).

I've got the Repsol and Tiger Stripe but I'd like the Pilot to complete the set.

So there is. I've never seen a clear original shell without the spoiler fitted. I guess that makes it easy to fit, whereas the non genuine shell takes a little guess work and marking out. I did wonder why the whale tail sat slightly off the back window. The spoiler has little nubs that fit into that recess on the genuine shell.

Sven I'm ordering a TBG Cossie shell, but just realised no whale tale comes with it.... is it a labourious Ebay search to find one?

What's the going rate?????

erm! well that depends on how many are up for sale at any one time, seen them go for £40+ and rough ones £10.

I have a NIB body set that looks like it may buy me an island in the Bahamas B)

Also on the 1:1 cars the Group A/WRC had different front wings. The Group A was flared whereas the WRC wing is much more "sculptured" around the top of the wheel. I had a Tamiya WRC and I was going to cut the wings about to make it more authentic. Then I realised I did not have the skill or the dedication ..... Pic of WRC wing for ref -
