Hey chaps, I've bought myself a budget brushless combo from Ebay just to see what it's like. I don't have any other brushless electrics as of yet so for under £30 I thought I'd give this one a go in a few cars, if it turns out to be a bit naff it's not the end of the world. It was a spur of the moment thing that popped up whilst searching for something else, I wasn't intending to buy it but you know what it's like!

My first victim will be a tl01b Baja King, I've no idea how it will run but I'm stumped as to which pinion gear I should use with this motor. I have the choice of 19t,21t and 23t, any clues as to which would be best?

Also, I guess an important question should be will the cars drivetrain take the strain of this setup? It has bearings fitted already. As I said I don't own any other brushless stuff so this is all new to me, would this be better suited to an on road chassis instead of off road or will it be fine? Should I have saved my money and bought a nippy brushed motor instead?

Any help is very much appreciated!

Well, it doesn't hurt to try! Just make sure you have a spare TL01 gear set ready to go. I tried a 4 pole brushless motor in my TL01b and it stripped the spur gear in fairly short order. With that said, I think I was running larger diameter 1.9 tires and may have had the front diff locked -- can't remember. Those factors certainly didn't help. I would stay with a 19t pinion and obviously go with an aftermarket steel option.

I am no expert, but isn't that an awfully low amp ESC for that motor? The write-up says the motor draws up to 66 amps, but the ESC is only rated to 45? Sounds like a recipe for cooked ESC innards to me, unless geared very conservatively.

These guys will surely take a bl system, I had a 13t in my tl01r and have a 10.5 in my mf01x and they run great!!! Did take the system out of the tl01 since it's a shelf queen now and I'm sure the bl setup will bend the hollow carbon shafts in the tranny...

Had a MM4600 in a baja champ for a while.  Only issue I had was the dogbones.  Mine came with the dogbones with the white plastic tips and they would snap off at the ball on a regular basis.

Never found a direct Tamiya replacement but I did stumble across TL01B knock off at a flee market and noticed it had all steel dogbones that were nice and thick so I picked it up for parts. Never hurt anything else but o was running old school NiMh packs that lacks the punch of today's LiPo packs.

I think the wt01 chassis 2wd, or 4wd versions have the same dog bones so if you do have the weaker white plastic ended dog bones on your tl01b there's plenty of spares out there. In fact I think they share the same upper and lower arms too and the hub carriers.

Hmmm, have to ask why they would sell them as a set if they aren't compatible. I wonder if that's why they are so cheap?

It's here now so I'll give it a bash with a 19t pinion (thank you pastimesteve)

Thanks to everyone for your replies, lets see what happens!

that thing is a clone/cousin of the fabled Hobbywing EZRUN 9T

they're not true 540 sized motors like the usual racing X.5 turn BLs. EZRUN is a smaller rotor in a finned can that bulks it up to look like a 540 size can (& is drop in fit); smaller means less torque etc but extra cooling fins isn't bad.

That said, the EZRUN 9T is just perfect for my bashing around in a 4WD buggy... got them in MantaRay and DF03. More than enough speed for smallish areas, it keeps cool and runtime is good.

Start off with smallest available pinion.

It's fine, motor can only draw as much as ESC can pass.

ezrun has overheat cutoff afaik... never triggered it before

have got at least 2 of the std smallest EZRUN ESCs; have also got some others running a 60A version... this ESC is quite a bit bigger. They work exactly alike, I've got then in SCTs where there's more space.

I always run the 19t pinions in all my TL01's as the brushed motors tend to heat up quite a bit off road. Let us know how you get on with it. I've yet to try out brushless so I'm very interested in the budget combo.

I ran a exceed 10.5t in my racing TL01 with no issues except that it was a little too quick. I used a steel 19t pinion and speed tuned gear set plus sticky 24r tyres, gears were fine👍
