As spotted at the WEMU RC ScaleShop site in Switzerland, these pics show the prototype scaler that Traxxas is showing (leaking is more like it) at the Nuremberg show.

Land Rover Defender D110 body with lots of molded details, including fender liners. Expect Traxxas to officially license the body if they stick with the Defender.

Ladder chassis with steel rails, centered motor and battery, quick-release strap, nice. Motor is labeled “Titan 21T Reverse Rotation.”

Portal Axles - Note how the axles step down to reach the center of the wheels. More ground clearance, and greater gear reduction.

Note three mini-servos on chassis. Two are for locking the front and rear diffs, like Summit. The third is a high-low shifter? Or a center diff? Most likely high-low. XL-5 looks standard, but will probably get different programming–unlikely Traxxas would build a rig this trick and not set up the speed control with a crawler-strength drag brake.

Specifications:
- Steel Ladder Frame Chassis
- Front Center Mounted Motor
- Front & Rear Remote Looking Diffs
- Two Speed Transmission
- Portal Axle For increased Ground Clearance
- Detailed D110 Defender Body & Bumpers

That looks sweet.  Wonder what the price will be?  Traxxas are a great go-to for indestructible bashers, I wonder how that translates to a solid, unbreakable crawler?

Looking forward to seeing more about this in due course :)

£500 has been mentioned, not sure if that's a educated guess or inside info though

The lockable diffs seem a bit pointless for a 'serious' scale rig - a winch would have made more sense (that lump on the front bumper's a dummy)

They're portal axles - there's a gearbox on the end of the axle tube

Gmade have used them on their R1 Rock Buggy (pics below are GMade axles, not Traxxas)

Few more FB pics - no original photographer credited, got these from 'Scale Builders Guild' FB post
The front bumper, fender flares, side steps and roll cage seem to be 3D printed, so things might change
The axles look moulded though :)

Not a fan of Traxxas and unless the body is improved a lot for production, I'm not tempted. I do like the portal axles though and wish I had bought the portal conversion Stella had for the CR-01 to make my Unimog a bit more authentical (and capable). Also, I think RC-operated diff locks are (even) more fun than RC-operated 2WD/4WD.

When I worked in the transmission-development at Fiat-GM-Powertrain, my superior was an RC-enthusiast too and he made and sold transmissions for RC-trucks in his spare time.  Once he invited me to a local club for RC-trucks and 1/10 scale model railroading. It was fun borrowing and riding his 1/10 scale (electric powered) diesel locomotive on the club's large outdoor layout, but the best experience of  the day was running his 3-axle Scania truck with RC-operated 2-speed transmission, with the drive on the front axle operated by a separate switch (on the transmitter) and separately RC-operated diff locks (possibly both rear axles together, don't remember). Of course no crawler, but running it in RWD-mode with open diffs, then getting stuck and getting out again by engaging the front axle and diff locks step by step, was great fun. I wish Tamiya (or an aftermarket company) would offer RC-operated diff locks for the Hilift or CR-01. Otherwise, this Traxxas might land on my wishlist.
