Re-release Buggy Champ Silver Edition

Recommended Posts

When I think of the Tamiya brand appear to me the images of some icon models. Among these, the Rough Rider is missing.

Really, I don't know why my first SRB has become this Buggy Champ, realized thirty years after the original. Maybe because I already have two models with the body of Sand Scorcher, perhaps because the Fighting Buggy does not attract me...

So, here is my Buggy Champ, in  the Silver Edition variant, purchased from Seidel.

I started construction Monday evening, but I have not yet received some bling bling optional parts and then the work  proceed with great calm.

You were lucky you found one. They seems to be everywhere out of stock. They aren't listed anymore on the website from seidel.

You're right, Seidel won't ship ouside Germany kit boxed with electronics. I'm working here in Italy for a French company with subsidiaries in Germany, England and more. Formally, the item has been shipped to Germany.

Anyway, my first hop up is the tamiya ball differential

The ball diff is inserted in the transmission housing with the gear train. The kit includes all bearings.

BuggyChamp_00017.jpg

As was suggested in the instruction manual of 1979, use a sealant between the two sides

BuggyChamp_00018.jpg

BuggyChamp_00019.jpg

perhaps the MOTORSIL is too much?

Now, it's "universal" time...

BuggyChamp_00022.jpg

and after the suspension arm, single, no double wishbone suspension, no rear stub axle.

BuggyChamp_00023.jpg

But we have two strange bar, and a little, thin, curved brass tube, what a strange torsion rod

BuggyChamp_00026.jpg

BuggyChamp_00027.jpg

BuggyChamp_00025.jpg

OK, once mounted does not function as a torsion rod, rather like the spring of the rear suspension.

Shafts and the single bearing complete this part of the transmission.

The kit includes two different final ratios, made by  a couple of gears and pinions. You can choose between 70/15 and 65/20 but unfortunately, the  20T is made by aluminum. A new RW Racing, 20T 0.6 arrived in my house.

BuggyChamp_00037.jpg

of course, my choice is for 65/20 and for a new Sport Tuned motor.

BuggyChamp_00031.jpg

but... but... I can't believe. The motor will not fixed. two small pins prevent autorotation, I think. And, on the bottom,a transparent cover closes all; only the cables can go out

BuggyChamp_00032.jpg

BuggyChamp_00033.jpg

no fixing screw... Tamiya, evil walks behind ME! (Heavy Metal Rulez!)

BuggyChamp_00034.jpg

65/20 on board.

BuggyChamp_00038.jpg

and the relative transparent dust cover

BuggyChamp_00039.jpg

For now I suspend the job at the rear: I'm waiting for some bling bling parts. I dedicate myself to the front axle assembly.

HEAVY METAL!

well, go to the front suspension

just a bit of attention to the order of the parts ( upper, lower right, left), springs, pin, grub screws and tubes. A kind of puzzle.

BuggyChamp_00042.jpg

BuggyChamp_00043.jpg

BuggyChamp_00044.jpg

and now I can start building the dampers.

BuggyChamp_00045.jpg

BuggyChamp_00046.jpg

sorry, I don't have no more pictures for the assembly of the dampers, I'll try again with the rear units...

BuggyChamp_00050.jpg

Fitted with the stub axles

BuggyChamp_00049.jpg

and finally with the shocks

BuggyChamp_00052.jpg

Yes, I think silver body will remain silver. In its (tamiya buggy champ silver edition) box.

But I have already taken a second body and a second decal sheet for this model. I'm thinking of the blue Bell Ray-ISS version.

OK, all parts built until now are assembled on the frame; frame are "composed" by two piece: a first part made vetronite ( I think this word is also used in the English language) and a second plate made by aluminum.

The latest work of this weekend concern electronics. Inside an ancient box (project developed in 1979) are inserted a mini receiver, a modern ESC, the steering servo and a battery. Advances so much space...

BuggyChamp_00077.jpg

For me, amazing, the servo is locked by a simple double-sided tape

BuggyChamp_00079.jpg

BuggyChamp_00080.jpg

Receiver and ESC

BuggyChamp_00081.jpg

BuggyChamp_00083.jpg

ESC is  LiPo compatible; 2S and 3S... 3S... mmmh...

the servo saver rod have a nice rubber cover sealed with a very professional metal end.

BuggyChamp_00085.jpg

BuggyChamp_00087.jpg

the radio box cover is locked by pins with spring

BuggyChamp_00088.jpg

BuggyChamp_00089.jpg

BuggyChamp_00090.jpg

and finally the completed radio box is fixed to the frame by two flexible nut. Just place, screw, lock.

BuggyChamp_00091.jpg

BuggyChamp_00092.jpg

BuggyChamp_00093.jpg

And now I can connect the servo saver and the motor

BuggyChamp_00094.jpg

BuggyChamp_00095.jpg

So much unused space inside an old radio box with the new electronic.

Unfortunately I have not found the  three pieces aluminum wheels but I love beadlock wheel and I love alu parts.

BuggyChamp_00100.jpg

an easy way to have something like this is to replace the parts R1 and L1 with aluminum counterparts

BuggyChamp_00101.jpg

Now a math quiz:

how many times the 2.2 enters in 1.7?

BuggyChamp_00099.jpg

Certainly once, and with so much effort

BuggyChamp_00102.jpg

A surprise for me. The aluminum version of the sprockets, the first time I see them.

BuggyChamp_00103.jpg

e real beauty

So, after a long wait  the bling bling parts arrived. During this period I tried to build  a fake engine to be applied to the model, using forex, old parts, scraps of mini4wd.

BuggyChamp_00113.jpg

BuggyChamp_00115.jpg

tests and modifications, parts replaced by others...I'm not a great artist

BuggyChamp_00116.jpg

in the end the almost definitive version

BuggyChamp_00117.jpg

yet some new detail

BuggyChamp_00119.jpg

and the last test

BuggyChamp_00121.jpg

still some color

BuggyChamp_00127.jpg

here the new part fron Taiwan

BuggyChamp_00128.jpg

BuggyChamp_00130.jpg

BuggyChamp_00133.jpg

BuggyChamp_00134.jpg

But I do not know how to do the exhaust

Now, the rear dampers

Copy tires arrived and installed. Now I'm in waiting for the "BelRay" stickers (missing by the postal service somewhere between England and Italy)

Unfortunately, a poor choice of spray paint forced me to redo all the paint job done up to now. Be careful in the future , avoid  the use of LUXENS spray for ABS and PS bodies.

BuggyChamp_00147.jpg

BuggyChamp_00148.jpg

Finally with four tires down on the ground
