So... my wife and I are off to Ireland for a week. She's going to a conference, I'm bumming around Dublin by myself for a few days. I doubt I'll run out of stuff to see or do, but on the off chance that I have a bit of time, are there any good hobby shops worth checking out?

If you are staying in the city centre your best bet would be to check out Marks Models:

The city store is a traditional old hobby shop, lots of Tamiya static kits, train sets etc, you could easilly poke around in there for an hour or so looking through bits and bobs.

They also have a bigger warehouse type store outside of the city (Rathcoole) again lots of static display kits or diorama stuff, and to a minor extent some RC although they seem to leave the RC to the specialist RC shops.  Another one of which is around the corner from Marks Models, has a lot of varied RC stuff but no actual Tamiya:

Theres also another hobby shop on Capel street called the model shop, they are really quite small an not even sure if they have a website or not.

Unfortunately in Ireland we have been ravaged by super high personal taxes for the last 10 years or so and the end result is that hobbies have practically withered and died out due to severe restrictions in disposable income for most of the population.  Dont let that put you off though I'm sure you will have a good time looking about, there's some cool record and comic book shops around Temple Bar and Grafton street areas.  Lots of old historical buildings about too!
