M 800STD 586 Posted February 11, 2022 I know you are more than capable of doing the rear sign yourself.
BuggyDad 4474 Posted February 11, 2022 Just a thought but for the printing of a sticker in transparent and red alone (or red text on black background?) with quite big and blocky text like that, you mght just find that a home printed sticker did the job OK. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of my home printed decals. Are you printing the spoiler and fitting on a piece of flat lexan as the vertical light lens/face? You could maybe even use waterslide ones like I did on the inside of that lexan, so their fragility wouldn't matter.
GermanTA03Guy 1327 Posted February 11, 2022 How about you use that nice rear spoiler, paint the backside from inside with translucent red, then make a cut vinyl police stop sticker, put it on from the outside and put some light inside the spoiler? You'd have to block the surrounding area off from light of course, maybe with black backing color...? Cheers
Lee1075 282 Posted February 11, 2022 Thanks for all your thoughts guys. Just had a phone call with Jeremy from Screenprintdigital, the way im getting the stickers done is the right way and he should have no problems printing them. They may well end up in his shop. The rear spoiler: I really want the POLICE STOP sign, what i really dislike is when something doesn´t look original. Obviously the original police cars and the Rover Vitesse have two different rear spoilers, the PC body being the Vitesse variant. I´m doing to get it done using 3d printed parts, it wont exactly be like the original but good enough. Scale is the most important thing here, I've uploaded the sticker in scale. Im going to make a piece the fits the LEDs inside, attaching it just below the spoiler and stopping above the rear lights. Made out of black resin with a divider in the middle and a clear front, like the light bar really. Then fit two LEDs inside it using the hardware from the German shop (https://www.rc-beleuchtungen.de/en/) He has the switches, LED´s and sound module i need. The body's spoiler will be painted flat black, my sticker will be done in two versions; one as attached and the other as a "backing plate" in black or red (not sure yet) with clear letters. Now where is that TA03 expert designer when you need him
Lee1075 282 Posted February 12, 2022 Base V3 designed, added nut inserts. Adjusted and made one of the holes smaller for the cables. Filled one of the holes on the each of the feet.
Lee1075 282 Posted February 15, 2022 Got the wheels done for my SD1 project. Removed the tyres using boiling water, sprayed them firstly in a coat of white, then silver. Ordered new tyres for them, HPI "Vintage" road tyres. Low profile just wont look right. Black resin should arrive tomorrow, i´ll be using that for base V3 and the rear spoiler lighting. Also waiting on the following to arrive any day: Artwork for the stickers (just done now and im reviewing it ) Edit: Reviewed the artwork, got sent a load of images from a horse-riding show MP3 Sound module, Sound: UK SD1.wav / JR conn 3x RC electronic on/off switch 2x SMD in blue / 2x SMD red flashing including, electronics / control system und JR cable 40 cm Tamiya TEU 105 Torque Tuned motor Absima CR6S, 6 channel RC radio + receiver A few other bits and pieces. What i might do at the end is a list of everything i bought / did and the cost of it all, if anyone is interested?

Lee1075 282 Posted February 19, 2022 Small update: Black resin arrived and base V3 is being printed just now. The Sticker sheet has been made up and looks amazing . This was done a a professional graphic designer, first off as vectors, then scaled to size and converted to a pdf. Believe me, that is not cheap . Time to send them off to a printing shop (screen print digital) and see what they say. I´ve uploaded a photo of them, I´m not going to upload the real artwork. From the original sticker set; The front lights and rear window frames have been modified from the BTCC car to a road car. The Rear stripe in black with "Rover Vitesse" is incorrect on the original sticker set, they spelt it "Vicesse", that has been corrected. Rover badge and number plates added. I went with: C reg (1985) 273 (the area code from my home town, Telscombe Cliffs in E.Sussex) LYJ Number plate for Brighton Police, E.Sussex in the 80`s. Sussex Police crest, Roof numbers, Police writing in the correct font, Police STOP rear sign in the correct font, and Jam Sandwich stripes.

Ordering the final parts today from Tamico, then i can finally start on everything.

Lee1075 282 Posted March 1, 2022 Little bit of work done this evening. Fitted the HPI "vintage" tyres, roughly cut out the body shell and placed it on the posts. Just looking for the correct ride height etc for adding those magnetic body holders. To be honest im really disappointed with those tyres, i should have done my research before hand. They have two different inside diameters, the smaller diameter wall, actually covers the outside of the wheel rim to make it look like a "higher" wall. I suppose that they only work with the HPI vintage wheels. It does not work on the "normal" wheels i bought at all. Oh well, lesson learned. Need to sand down the shell now and adjust the hide height accordingly.
Kol__ 3377 Posted March 1, 2022 Looking really good @Lee1075 mate! I see what you mean about the tyres, the profile looks very slim line. So the lip of the rim is covering some of the side wall you wanted to see more of? What are the other options for a more period correct look with the tyres? No the wheels are perfect, those HPI tyres, will only fit on special wheels from HPI. One side has a nice high wall which i needed, the other side is low like normal touring car tyres. Didn´t know that until they arrived. If you try and fit them on normal wheels, you have a steep angle inwards. Here's a pic of them on HPI wheels, you can see the tyre walls height difference from the inside and outside. To be honest, the quality of the cutout hole on the outside wall was shocking. They are a bit bizarre those HPI vintage tyres as I also found out. They will fit certain standard touring car wheels but they need to have a flat edge on the outside rim for the lip of the tyre to sit over it. I bought some for my MK1 Escort and luckily fitted the alloy rims of eBay.
Lee1075 282 Posted March 1, 2022 Nice @Re-Bugged, unfortunately they looked really weird on my wheels and it didn´t look right. I take it you have the outer flap just sitting over part of those wheels? Found a set of Pirelli tyres now that have a 13mm higher wall than the insides of those HPI´s. They are rally tyres, but will do the job nevertheless.
GeeWings 2830 Posted March 3, 2022 Looking great @Lee1075. I have to tell you that I showed this to my dad last night. He immediately reminisced about his time as a Black Rat (Met Traffic Division) where he first drove one. Following a bad motorbike accident he shifted to cars full-time and drove the SD1 in tactical response and security escort roles. He did admit he sometimes drove it like he stole it He also reminded me of its moment of public fame in the '87 when it was used for a life-saving organ transplant run into central London.

Fantastic to story's like that, glad it put a smile on his face . My dad remembers his Sussex Police SD1 well, he went to Gatwick later as he is a ex Army eod expert. There he got a unmarked..... Montego Ah the London transplant run, there is a great video of that on YouTube. Indecently, I've got the Met Police crests here too if you ever need them
Lee1075 282 Posted March 7, 2022 Managed to get a bit done over the weekend. Base V3; completed. Made a few small adjustments in its design, printed then sanded and painted using Testors chrome on the inside. Four M1.6 nuts superglued into place which lets me screw the internal chipset down. Still missing some black lines to divide those compartments up. I´ve got some Kyosho line tape for that, but i will have to wait until my sticker set arrives. Glued some silver foil on the inside using shoe goo. Spent some time on the electronics as well, the light bar can be switched on / off, cycled through or a light mode can be chosen. The siren can be switched on and off, finally the rear red and blue SMDs for the STOP POLICE sign work. They can be switched on or off. Everything can be on or off at once, or each one can be switched separately. Well happy with that, even if the radio gear setup did confuse me for a while . Made a video of it all working, "Beware headphone users, the siren is quite loud"

Lee1075 282 Posted March 13, 2022 New tyres arrived, so i quickly fitted them. These HPI Pirelli tyres look so much better in my eyes. Got the shell cut, sanded and set the ride height. Looks okay to me, now to start designing the rear stop sign. Then i can drill all the holes in need in the shell and finally start painting.
