quote:Agree - however I was advised we should only downcode at the end, otherwise each time its opened up and edited, there's another generation of loss. True?

Yes Willy there is always loss but the DVD compression is so good compared to the lower resolution that its would be almost neglectible, but since you want it 100% and not 99% perfect, good luck! [:)]

quote:TOO RIGHT!!! Heh heh heh... Okie, I'll concede... you're right. I'll have to drown my loss sorrow this weekend by watching my degraded VHS copy... (180 mins, PAL format)

Nice that we agreed finally, at least you have a VHS copy so don't be sad...[;)]

Cheers mate!

60GB??? What did you do with the data??? I meant the original form, digital or analog video tape... Converted to a reasonably format wouldnt exceet 1GB, except if the guy was one week in the musum... LOL

Oooh... guess you haven't tried video editing on PC, Theo. [;)]

I got the tapes on MiniDV; these are pure MPEG1 stream so for least quality loss they are dumped direct to HDD. Usually comes to about 20-30GB per Hourtape (prior to editing & downverting to a suitable distribution format), and I was given 3 tapes...

This was from the 2001 TamiyaCup - where they had the vintage race.

Hate to be the killjoy but Mini-DV outputs in raw AVI! I just moved 18mins and it was 3.5gis. The res is 740X something for pal. SVCD is the same res with lower quality sound. Rule of thumb DVD quality is 15mins on a cdrom, SVCD is 30mins on a cdrom, VCD 1 hour on a cdm. Its very simple to convert to mpeg, the Ill check on the program name but it will let me capture, convert, and burn at once its quite nice. It came with my canopus ADVC-1394 capture card.

Yes, but thanks to the Divx codec (http://www.divx.com/) you can also compress one DVD (90-120mins) in a bit lower quality on 1 CD or almost the same quality on only 2CDs!, good free programs for converting and editing are Virtualdub and MovieXone.

The output from the DV isnt exactly uncompressed avi, but the very fewly compressed (5:1 I think) format that the DV uses, otherwise it would be even 5 times bigger! Incredible what high data rates the 60 year old TV uses, respect!

Divx is great on the computer. When I coach I show games shot off the DV and we play it on a DVD player in SVCD format. From the DVD its shown onto a sony projector. Plus most of the parents don't understand what Divx is. However if I give them a CD and say its MPEG they seem to figure that out ok.

With regards to sending each other VCD's I think its a great idea. -And- you're right theo divx is the way to go. I also plan on shooting movies and keeping them on VCD -so that I can pop them in the dvd player.

Oh when it comes to video capture go with Canopus. I love the card and I'm using an athlon 1.4ghz and 512mb ram to convert. The card has dv, svid, rca, and usb, input. It also has a front mount plate so I don't need to reach around the back of the computer. I have yet to lose a frame!!!!

Ya, I was given some big paper where some fella was working out the "effective data rates" of analog broadcast free2air TV... think it was something like 60-100M/s.

Good old Vdub, I always visit the vcdhelp.com website. I'll find out the name of the DVD software that came with the card. It's a little more user friendly than Vdub. But its way better than that ulead ****!!
