I have a strange question. How many into this hobby are adults? I am in my 40's and want to get into RC cars (As I was in the 80's) and am just wondering if mostly they young are into RC cars?

Thanks

KCRC

I'm 41 and just got back into it after being in it back in the 80s as a kid. I believe there's a ton of us like that at the Club.

You'll find that many of us are all the same age. 40-ish (I'm 41 actually). Had my first Tamiya when I was 11. We were children of the 80's ;)

I'm 41 too. Got back into the hobby when my sister asked my advice on a RC car for my nephews birthday. Since I owned a Wild Willy M38 back in the 80's, I was the "subject matter expert" for this :D

Next step was to buy a RTR buggy "for my son" so he and his cousin could play together. Uhu, brushless 2-cell LiPo car for a 6-year old, sure... B) At least my wife thought it was okay, she thought it was just a toy

Then started to update my cars from back in the days to current 2.4GHz with Lipo. First my Revell go-kart, then my WW M38. After that, my son wanted an RC of his own, so he got a Lunchbox for his birthday.

After that, I wanted to discover on-road racing so I got myself a TT-01R type E for my birthday with a HPI Ford GT body.

And a Rocksta micro crawler which is now under way to get a RC4WD 1/18 landrover body. (My 6-year old daughter loves this thing).

I'm really glad that both my son and daughter like "playing" with RC, as it's an opportunity to drag them away from TV/Xbox/tablet computer and get them to play outdoors.

Next step will be to convice my wife I am in desperate need of a Honda city turbo (which is also still a childhood dream). And an XV-01, and a 1/10 scale crawler, and..., and ...

Yeah, I think most of us are the wrong side of 40. My son's first RC was a clod buster (at 4 :) ). He still has more fun chasing it than driving it, but at least when he does drive it it's impossible to break.

42 year old here.  I got back into RC after I restored the Blackfoot I got for Christmas back in 86.  I then realised that I actually have my own money and can buy what I want when I want. I don't have  to plead with my dad to get replacement parts, because I smashed something trying to jump the Blackfoot over a river.  Also the interweb makes things so much easier ....well it makes it easier to spend money lol

I am 47 now. Third time back in RC. 1th time I was just a teenager and bought my first RC. A Tamiya Super Champ. My brother had a Wild Willy M38. Somewhere in my twenties I bought a Serpent and a Tamiya nitro car. Even joined a RC club. After a couple of years I was more interested in 1:1 cars. Since 2013 I'm back because I bought my 3 teenage sons each a Traxxas RC car. Then started with Tamiya for myself. I like driving them but really enjoy the builds.

So to answer your question. I think RC is for all ages. But you will find a lot of members here in their 40s. So welcome and enjoy this hobby.

I'd wager that 90% of the members who actually post in these forums are over the age of 35....the lurkers though? Who knows.

A relative youngster here at 39, I think we are all adults on here. Kids today play PsBoxes and spend their free time on their phones. I think the only ones that are active in the hobby do it to keep their dads (or perhaps their mums?) from feeling lonely.

I'm another 47 here but I've always had an RC car in my life since my first one (ford ranger) back in the very early 80s even when life kicked in and had to join it an RC car was still their in the background so to speak! Then when the kids grew up i started to race nitro but got frustrated at the rules and regulations kinda took the fun out of racing so i give that a wide birth! now for the last 8 years or so I've come back full circle and now just like to build and bash (very carefully) my electric brilliant Tamiya's with a little splash of kyosho and I'm loving it more than ever:D! And you hit the nail on the head with kids of today! If it's not on a phone they don't care ( very frightening that they are the next generation of adults....... Mind you some adult today are just as bad:unsure:!)

This thread is hilarious, even my wife found it funny...which shows my age too. I think I take the title of youngest at only 36!

2nd time in the hobby for me too, first rc in the 80s, raced in the 90s and first new cars last November. 2 Tamiyas, one for my 3yo and that meant I needed 1 to play with him. Mine now has brushless and lipo, his has polystyrene stopping him reach full throttle. 2 rere's turned up last week, wife suggested that I have a break from buying rc for a while as I have broken through $2k in 4 months - money I could have only dreamed about pumpin gas for $6 an hour

44 years on Earth, 31 years as a Tamiyaholic. But yeah, we're all kids here.

A friend of mine posted a thing on Facebook the other day that said, "If you don't grow up by age 50, you don't have to." Just gotta hold out six more years...

I'm at the age where I have to think about how old I am...  I think I'm 44...  I'll have to ask my wife...  She's the one that keep track of that kinda stuff...

Bought my first rc truck (Marui Big Bear) in 1989 at age 16 and my second in 2017 at age 43 (WT-01) Bush Devil 2.  Pretty much addicted right now. MORE POWER!!!!! I know I can make this thing faster....

31, my second time around. Got a Lunchbox for Christmas last year and have been fully stuck in RC mode since..

Isn't there some medication we can take to make it go away? Beer isn't working :P

When I first joined back in the early/mid 2000's I remember most everybody seemed to be in their late 20's/early 30's. Now here many of us are in our 40's. It's funny how time flies. I figure I've been doing the Tamiya thing long enough now, that if I'm not doing it, I'm probably dead.;)

40 years young here, had some cheap Nikko's when I was about 10 ( couldn't afford Tamiya's back in the 80's - or dad said that to shut me up)

Got back into RC when I turned 20 working with money to burn, had a  Wild Dagger, Traxxas Stampede, Escort Cosworth and a Clio Williams front motor mounted thingy... then sold them all by 21 and then got back into RC when I was 36... found out all new stuff was 2.4Ghz and lipo so got a few big 1/8 brushless trucks ( Kyosho Mad Force VE and MT4-G3, loved the lipo power!!!)

Then my daughter arrived and I down sized from 1/8 ( too big and they always came back from the park muddy requiring hours cleaning and fixing - time I didn't have anymore) to smaller Tamiya's about a year ago and haven't looked back since.

Now I own 8 Tamiya's having just sold 3 of them... the wife is still perplexed to say the least... told her I was down sizing but now have more cars than ever arrgghhhh!

35 years+ is perfect, I am 41 😀. RC's are not for kids, no way their parents can afford to spend so much money on toys , when their dads need a new Tamiya kit now and then 😉.

47. Getting harder and harder to justify buying kits to the wife every year... that's why I do my best not to tell her! I no longer have the first car I ever owned, but i have the 2nd - a very well worn Grasshopper from 1985!

Hi my name is David, and I'm a Tamiyaholic.
