Light at the end of the tunnel, but is it daylight or a train? I looked a my collection the yesterday (a mixture of vintage and re-release off-roaders from the first 100) and realized I'm only about 10 cars away from completing it. Now, my collection would not be totally complete, but with only 10 more cars I'd have every vehicle I want in the collection except those that are totally un-affordable. For instance, I would never want a Striker (sorry Striker fans) even if it was given to me. I also don't see myself as getting something so rare or expensive as a complete Avante 2001 or Blazing Blazer (unless re-re'd).

So this leaves some cars to hunt down like a Super Sabre (very important to me as it was my late father's favorite) or Sonic Fighter because the likelihood of re-release is low. With some, like the Falcon or Mud Blaster, I'm going to be patient because I see a re-release as being plausible. Some, like a Grasshopper or Brat, I simply haven't gotten around to buying. There's a few odd on-roaders I'd go for like a Tyrrel P34 or Road Wizard, but not many.

While its exciting to near completion, I'm stuck wondering what I'll do next. Collect other brands? I always wanted a Nichimo Spirit FF and Royal Ripper. Start looking at Kyosho? I'm a slow, patient buyer who relatively careful with his money. I'm certainly blessed and not complaining about the situation but it is a quandary.

Is every example you own already perfect for your satisfaction? Or do you still buy better examples when one turns up, or better parts to restore it with, or job lots of cars for certain parts that you need etc etc... meh it's never ending.

Or do you only care to possess 1 of each model, regardless of condition, & that's it?

Do you really have the willpower to just have 1 example of each, especially when it's also a nice runner... or do you have a shelfer & a NIB to keep the runner happy.

How about those models with known factory variants? :) or even original vs re-re

Bit like you, got a softspot for SuperSabre & WildOne... still got my wellworn originals - it's been cleaned up & broken parts replaced but I don't want to restore it fully. Have since pieced together another runner, plus have accumulated a fair stash of parts enough to build a shelfer - eventually!

Other cars I had (936) or I wish I had (Countach)... yep, parts accumulation again, aim to build a nice shelfer; no intention to run. Ditto 959, don't think it handles well enough to be worth running.

Love TBevos and VDFs and perennial classics like GrpCs & CC01, more the merrier.

Some cars not really on want list like RoadWizard, but then 1/2 turns up so yeah, parts accumulation starts too.

Cars for vintage racing like Hornet & MantaRay... got a few for backup, plus parts

Rabbithole sure runs deep...!

When they get to the shelf, they're up to my standards. I don't like broken bits, tattered bodies and bald tires but war scars are fine otherwise. Gives them character. Interestingly you mentioned multiples of certain models and that's one of the keys that got me thinking. I have 4 Monster Beetles, 3 Lunch Boxes, 2 Madcaps, 3 FAVs, 4 Clod Busters on so on. That's when I stopped and said "Wait a minute. how many don't I have yet to complete the collection I want to build?" That's when I saw the end in sight and it wasn't as far off as I thought. Randomly, since I joined Tamiyaclub in '04 or '05, I had managed to amass this collection by just picking up cars that I felt were the right price and caught my interest. I suppose when the reasonably priced ones are collected I could start saving money and going after some rarer models I never thought to own based simply on their exclusiveness like an original Hilux, but boy do I have trouble spending over $500 on one model. I know this is foolish considering the value of the collection as a whole is staggering but what else would I spend money on? Still your point that the rabbithole runs deep is true. I'll still collect old buggies even just to fix them up to give them new life. Its what I do I suppose.

Don't feel bad Saito, you can always hop them up beyond reasonable levels, run them mercilessly and crash the bejeezus out of them. Then you get to spend more rebuilding them just like me!

In all seriousness I still own only the 1 car (Lunchbox obviously) and am trying to justify the DT03 I have on back order right now. I can't even fathom 70 cars nor the piles of spare parts you must have lying around!!

Haha if you're scared of spending $$$ go have a dabble in 5th/Large scale :P

Buy a Baja, hopup every part on it until the leftovers crate has enough ~75% parts to build another (so I get tempted to buy the missing bits & rebuild another), discover Lauterbacher owners laugh at Baja'ers as poor cousins  then get schooled that KIDS are a LOT more EXPENSIVE than even largescale RC, just that fancypants perambulator alone ahhhh...

O'wait... you haven't bitten the 3spd tasty Apple yet?? :o

Never owned any new BiTD but found them interesting & intriguing enough to send a ferret down that tube ^_^ prices can get crazy but I'd pass on everything that wasn't "good value"; part of that equation was shipping these big heavy things so I further limited my search area to local wherever possible. Over course of 5+ yrs (BEFORE KIDS admittedly) Hilux, Bruiser & Mountaineer turned up; not keen enough on Blazer to bother.

They look great on the shelf (better be a STRONG shelf!) & no less interesting today to tinker with on the bench, but IMHO they're lousy runners

this runner only gets out on occasion & mainly to fly the club flag

I'll admit, 5th scale has crossed my mind recently ;). Reminds me of the old Raco Jackrabbit. I did get a re-re Bruiser a while back and it was a lousy runner, lol . I sold it, then years later decided I needed a least one original 3-speed even if it was for the shelf, so I got the Mountaineer/Mountain Rider. People will throw bricks at me, but I still prefer the High Lift series for running. You've definitely given me some things to think about;).

Dont. Read: DO NOT, get into 5th scale...

Or kids, if you can avoid it  listen to the wise kiwi

definitely don't be stooooopid like moi, dragging back largescales in the weeks just before #2 popped out

xmas break, had friends over then naturally "hey lets go out run these giants" so we do... great fun kicking roosters making deafening noise... until I manage to run myself over (they've only got RWbrakes and being so big they look SLOWER than they're actually going ). Smashes my ankle bowling me over and sure enough, 24hrs later, gotta make that mercy dash to maternity ward with a swollen ankle twice the size of the other.

Bajas got sold shortly after  all except 1, as a reminder of our folly.

HighLift might perform better but meh it looks so bland... and its fat chunky axle cases are fugly <_< haven't yet gotten enthused enough to build one.

Whereas CC01 is no less plasticky but it doesn't pretend to be more than what it is, so I like it more for its honesty ^_^ also simple & versatile.

CR01 remain unbuilt. Ditto Clod & Jugg. Me think their existence in the hoard is just as a marker to save me losing sleep about chasing one "for completeness" later on.

Don't worry, I don't think it's ever possible to run out of new toys to buy

Start looking at Kyosho?

This makes sense to me - when i was younger looking through my brother's Tower Hobbies catalogs, the Kyoshos always seemed like the cars that the pro guys in some far away land used, and if i ever saw one it would be like seeing a unicorn. We were stuck with plain old grasshoppers and hornets, only Tamiya at LHS. He did get an Assault at one point later on, but i only ever recall him trying to start it up.

So yeah, i'd move on to Kyosho for sure.

I would love to rally race 1:1 but I'm older and wiser now. My full size car collection is down to 5 and will stay there. My daughter and wife are top priorities now (as it should be). RC is about the only hobby I have held onto because I can fit it in here and there when time allows. I think Kyosho may be next.

Well said sir....one of the great things about this hobby is that i do it with my son. After my teenage years I never had another RC until he came along, and we've had a blast. I do some sim racing as well, which is getting pretty realistic these days....if you have a desire to race but want to be around and not spend too many thousands, it's a great hobby...here's a link of my sim rig doing truck driving, but I mainly use it for online racing....i dotted the link so i'm not posting a massive video image in your thread!...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2D61E5Kv8Ko&t=2s...

Yes sim racing is amazing these days. Can be quite an involving hobby. Way cheaper than the real thing, but also can be quite pricey when going for the right kit (which is pretty much essential). Also quite educational if you're in one of the more details sims.

I find it amazing that you stayed within the initial 100.

Of about 20 cars I have, a dozen belongs to the first 100, but several are newer.  I know it's a push, but I figure Zahhak could be a 21st-century successor of Astute.  Juggernaut 2 could also be a 21st version of Clod Buster.  If I think of it that way, I am still within the spirit of the initial 100.  There is no meaning to the number 100.  It's what you assign it to be.  For some younger person, Konghead will be the vintage like Mud Blaster.  Why not think young and be that person?

The latest release is Lancia 037 rally.  Its body and TA02 chassis are actually from within the 100.  You could justify including in your collection.  But it's item number is #654.  I'd say you have 554 more to go.  :D
