Hotshot Build (with hop-ups)

Recommended Posts

So started today on a Hotshot build, with some mods that I've taken inspiration from other builds I've seen. First up.... beautiful box! Yummy. I know you all know this box like the back of your hand but still.... it's a beaut.

So here are some hop-ups.. First up.... Gold wheels, these will look awesome against the Hotshot red.

BFB3BA7E-3CC4-4D92-935D-4F1C65CB60B8_zps

Some parts from RadshapeRC, for a front and rear suspension modification to go to a Supershot style 4 shock setup, and a front bumper. Also have a Supershot undertray to go on.

Have spent a small fortune (and waited a mini ice-age for them to turn up) on some GMade XD Diaphragm dampers as recommended to me (by Mad Ax if I recall... cheers mate!). 93mm on the rear, 75mm on the fronts. Selected these for the aluminium goodness, supposed quality, and more importantly a nice complementary look to the red and gold of the Hotshot.

An uprated motor (hope I got the right one, spent ages reading about BZ / TZ / RZ) and ESC:

Assembling the rear gear box. Love the way this comes together. Interesting to see similarities and differences to the Novafox I recently built. Metal gears and Molybdenum grease.

The TZ motor, nice and shiny:

And next to completed front gearbox:

I note that there is a lot more ceramic grease applied on the Hotshot than the Novafox, on very similar parts and assemblies. I wonder why that is - anyone?

So having waited an eternity for these, I made the GMade diaphragm shocks. I had been planning on a black and red upgrade to the HotShot.

Lovely black aluminium, silver and red. One of my favourite colour combos.

Now onto the suspension modification. I am fitting the RadshapRC Dual Front Conversion V2 (Hotshot and Boomerang) and Dual Rear suspension Conversion kits. Starting with the rear bracket.

The bottom of the rear shocks are fitted using a plate that sits in the lower suspension arm, that then fits an upright bracket to take the bottom of the rear shock:

The top of the shocks are fitted by replacing the rear monoshock connection and providing a shock upright that sits over the rear gearbox assembly to take the top of the shock.

On to the Front shock modification. It seems this is a straight lift of the SuperShot / SuperHotShot type of front suspension. This is fitted by upright stanchions, and a small connection through lower suspension arm. Uprights shown here:

Now to finish off the rest of the car. The roll cage, netting and roof was interesting and fiddly, but man does it look cool! Can't believe I missed this car the first time round in the 80s (although it did cost about a bajillion pounds at the time).

97176128-300A-476E-9461-89C055CA076C_zps

First ever driver! V difficult to paint. Will need to pull him out and do a better job:

Roll cage on. Requires some careful fitting and sequencing with the rear shock mod.

By this point am worried about the spacer and top connection of the front shock: any advice anyone? Does this look correctly fitted?

Now to wheels and shell. On with the Gold wheels:

Attempted a Pearl PS-58 undercoat and a PS-02 Red coat. Looks awesome in the sunlight, slightly off-red in the shade. Very hard to convey in these photos:

Now not sure how to finish, given I've modded the suspension and am loving the Black / Red combo, to go with box art or not...hmm.

Thanks all for the comments, appreciated. So I painted the tyres, I tried a different method to my NovaFox build, this time filling the letters with ink, rather than picking out just the edges. Not sure which I prefer but am leaning to the NovaFox "edges only" method. However I've not done an entirely neat job on either car, it's really tricky. The wheels:

And a few pics with them mounted to the Hotshot:

Am still not decided on the decals.... will consider over the next week or so. Also, am thinking of getting some black wheels, to go with the Red and Black theme that I'm quite liking on this build. I love the way the black and red shocks go with the Hotshot, really nicely suited I think.  More to follow!

Looking really good buddy :) You could always order the decal in a black scheme from MCI :)

Where did you get the wheels from. I am just about to start my build (upgrades later maybe) but the gold wheels look awesome. I'm struggling to find any online.

Hi CrashTest, the wheels are Tamiya part 84282, I got them on eBay from the US but I can't see the seller details any longer on my record. If you google the part number you'll get some hits of places that sell them, I just did a quick search and most seem to be from Asia. Good luck...!

Looks great. How do you find the shocks?

What lengths did you get? I've got the same radshape dual conversion for the front of my Boomerang.

What did you use for the lettering on the tyres?

Shocks are made by Gmade, XD diaphragm shocks. I got them at fusion hobbies. Recommmended to me by @Mad Ax  (thanks again mate).

Front 75mm (gm22307), rear 93mm (gm22107). Fairly pricey but they're gorgeous.

Thanks. They do look nice.

Haven't been sure what size shocks to get for the front (boomerang rears are 100mm as standard), so 75mm for the front it is!

Not much pricier than equivalent Tamiya CVAs.

Sorry, and lettering using permanent white ink marker, brand is Pilot super color. Pen type is 'EF extra fine'. Found on amazon or similar, about 3-5 quid.

Cheers TS. The red and the black of the aluminium shocks is really gorgeous, a nice combo. Thinking of getting some more for another car. Works well with the all black aluminium RadshapeRC mods.
