Ouch, thats a big question and I'm pretty sure everyone has a differant answer according to there tastes. I really like the TA 04S Corvette. 1) I'm a big corvette fan-like really "big", and I love the chassis and the cars handling. 2)The car is high tech but fairly simple to build and maintain. 3)Plus there are all kinds of hop ups/options that make the car faster and personalised. For off roading I like the blazing star. I like the handling, the car is easy to drive and build, and hop up. Not a big favorite among the tamiya afficianado, but suits me to a tee.[8D]

I like the Egress and the Top Force Evo for 'serious' 4WD buggies, even though they're a little bit outclassed now. The Manta Ray chassis cars (Dirt Thrasher, Blazing Star...) are all pretty good actually, and make great fun bashers.

For retro fun, you can't go past the old Hot Shot/Super Shot cars.

IMHO:

Best 4WDs for scale realism looks and collectiblity are the 3 speeds, no need to say why, just look at them.

Best vintage 4WD buggy for collectibility is the Hot Shot as it was the first one.

Best 4WD for hi-tech design to watch and admire the Avante as it was (over-)engineered like a piece of art, just look at its suspension for example.

Best Tamiya 4WD buggy for running/racing is the Top Force Evo as it was the most hopped up and race engineered 4WD buggy from Tamiya.

Best vintage 4WD tourer is the Schnitzer as it was one of the first touring cars of all, and has a magnificent body.

Best modern 4WD tourer is the TRF-415 as its current world champion, but won't be next year [;)]

Yes it will! We'll have to wait until 2006 to get a new World Champion!

Which tamiya 4wd car or buggie would you say is best and why?

For looks/fun -- I would have to say the Hi-lux is probably the best looking and most accurateid="blue">.

For Racing: My money would be on the Hot shot.id="blue">

Yes. That started the whole touring car class.

Yes, that's why I wrote the Schnitzer was one of the first and not the first.

and I don't have any experience with off-road cars but I really like the hummer, subaru brat, ... and of course the 3-speeds

THE BIGWIG , I was the first kid on the block to have one , I was a spoilt brat.

It was snowing the first time I took it out and I remember passing all the real cars stuck on the hill outside my parents house.

I thought I was the bizz[8D][8D][8D]

My vote for Tamiya Best 4WD would go to the 3spds, specifically the Bruiser/Mounty. They are really the last R/C car that Tamiya made that truly showed their skill at combining scale realism and model engineering into what is really a kids toy.

The chassis and axles, suspension and gearboxes even today look stunning and with the right photograph they can easily be mistaken for real vehicles.

Tamiya was and has always been synonymous with scale realism and the 3spds are a perfect example of them at their best. It is a shame that in the last 15 years I haven't seen anything approaching the 3spds quality come out of Tamiya in the R/C lineup. Despite the alloy chassis in the TXT it still pales in comparison to the 3 speed trucks.

Take a look at the 1/14 scale rigs and 1/16 tanks, espically the full function ones...

My personal favorites:

Hilux - The first 4WD for Tamiya.

Hot Shot - Tamiya's first 4WD buggy and a fantastic performer for its day.

Avante - Simply an Innovative engineering marvel.

Egress - Tamiya's first use of exotic materials (carbon fibre chassis, titanium screws).

TRF 414M2 - first Tamiya to ever win an IFMAR world championship.

Oh and I shouldn't forget;

F201 - Innovation and scale realism, Tamiya at its best.

I also really like the TA03F...and I'm starting to like it more and more now I'm rebuilding one.

Just like it. it's special with the motor in the front... and the TA03 is tamiya's first belt drive

Buggy Racing = Egress because it was a wonderful piece of engineering and handled brilliantly. Looks awesome too!!

Buggy Play = Vanquish because it was basically a stripped down Egress without all of the ball diff & torque splitter nonsense to break! In my opinion it was the perfect balance between technology and reliablity.

Saloon Racing = I have no idea.....I guess the latest TRF product!

Saloon Play = Lancia Delta Integrale. The old Manta Ray based saloons were great..the rally ones even better because you could run on gravel without wrecking the shell [:P] The Delta body was one of Tamiyas finest too.
