Merv you made some good points in your last post. really people should drive these cars afterall thats what they were intended for. The thing I find is that many of these cars pale in comparison to what is available today. I was somewhat dissapointed in the performance of both my Hilux and Mountaineer. My runner rough rider sure makes me appreciate how far buggy technology has come in the last 20 some odd years.

These NIB topics come up all the time. for me I have just a few NIBs. Most will get built but ones like my Sand Scorcher will stay in the box. The Tamiya Purists will hate me but my passion is period hop ups. I like to hop up my vintage rides with as many as I can find. I couldn't afford the Hop ups back in the day and even though I make a more money now, I find that I still can't afford them.

I also agree, AFAIK kits where sealed by local distributors and not Tamiya, so for me a shrinkwrapped kit isn't more valuable to a non, if the boxes are in similar conditions, but in the end its your money...

I also agree that everyone should do what he likes, below is my purely personal aspect, no truth, just my prefernces:

I even started to buy at a moment few NIBs guess also due to the fact that as a collector you often get the feeling you aren't a "serious" or "good" collector if you don't have some musts, which were mostly imposed by that (silly I found now) "which Tamiyas are collectable?" site. There was even a trend around this in the old Tamiya forum, but lately I have the feeling that things have luckily changed. Nowadays in TC most admired are not NIBs or even according to box new built kits, but creative customized cars, or nice runners in action, as thats what these cars are for, we must admit that static kits have better details and look more realistic on the shelf. Luckily I soon realised that you don't need to have the "must" kits or "NIBs" to be genuine Tamiya fan or collector. Also my NIBs were giving me the least joy, as how often did I took them of the shelf to look inside those - lovely I must admit - blisters? The shelf queens I see every time I turn around in my room shining at me, my runners give me an even bigger smile when driving, especially together with other 30+ year old kids [;)]. I found out that for me the cheaper a car is (runner < shelf queen < NIB) the more joy it gives, like many things in life, so decided to also sell most of my NIBs and have much more runners or shelf queens instead. I can understand that NIBs have also their magic, but wouldn't want them if I wouldnt have a new built and runner before, I would like shrink wrapped the least, as you can't even admire the nice packaging inside, so I would get those only if I would have a runner, a new built and a not wrapped NIB before.

Cheers

Thanks Jay...Its all in the Box...A perfect box, well a C-9, there are no 10's, commands a high price to NIB collectors..in the case of Sand Scorchers , Hilux, Blazing Blazer the box can bring $500 plus over the normal kit. A C-9 Hilux or Blazer kit would bring well over $3,000 but you never see any..Because they are sooooo Rare..Jerry...

Hoenstly I am surprised it didn't go for more as that box along with its contents are mint. I was thinking in the $2300 range.

How can you guys part with big bucks for a sealed kit and never look inside the box. It would bug me to death to know whether there was actually a real kit inside and not just a pair of old shoes! [xx(]

For the sorts of money we are talking about here, why don't we all get together and form a new company called, Tammiya and reproduce the vintage cars ourselves?

The logo can have the red and blue stars switched around :)

Yes it getting crazy with the prices...I had a "buy it now" for $1750 and would have been very happy with that[:D]..You know evey year we see new collector and C-9 kits are very rare..Three years ago $1,000 was considered a lot for the Scorcher, Bruiser, and Monte..I remember paying $1000 for a C-9 Bruiser four years ago..Where will the prices end...But the dollar has droped by about 40% against the Euro over the past 18 months..and the Oz dollar was almost 2 to 1 when I bought this Scorcher for $950 three year ago..So take that into consideration and Nick actually got the kit for $1,100,,Not $2,025.[:(]. You guys in the UK and Oz have a great opitunity to buy at very discounted prices while the dollar is getting killed here in the US.. Now I will go have a stiff drink of "Gray Goose"[;)] ...LOL
