This old thread has some useful background (I thought) to the TL01, especially the gearing

Think you're nearly there already 😀

Try some universal shafts on the front at least, lightweight drive shaft(make one out of hollow carbon fibre) maybe adjustable camber links and definitely a steel pinion gear. If budget allows try and get the Long arm suspension set.

Tamiya Hop ups are getting a bit thin on the ground and expensive for the TL01😲.

There is a limit to a TL01 but they still are great to race. I put a 10.5t in mine and it was way to much the chassis couldn't handle it.

What are you racing on ? carpet? is so stabilizer bars may help.

Thanks for the replys bugget will be little tight but just going try my best to get it as far as i can to get use to the racing we race on carpet for half year the outside at the moment weather permitting .i am getting better beat a bloke who has a schumacher chassis and with a 13.5t motor.but is down to consistency than power.

This is what I would do to a TL01 if I was setting it up to race.. (in addition to the berings and oil shocks that you already have)

From memory, there are 28 bearings in a TL01, so the first thing that I would do is to remove one (1) of the shields off each bearing, and then wash all of the grease out of the bearings, and then lubricate them with a drop of light oil.. You will be surprised how much drag that the grease in the bearings will cause..

I made a lightweight main driveshaft for mine out of some 5mm brass tube that I got from the K&S bar at my LHS.. Brass may not be as light as Carbon Fibre, but it is cheap and easy to get, and its still lighter than the stock steel shaft.. You can also use the off cuts to make lightweight gear shafts for the gearbox if you wish..

I would also be using a LiPo battery if you are not already.. LiPo batteries are typically much lighter than NiMh batteries, and they will have more punch..

You may want to look at getting some 2 degree toe in hubs for the rear as a tuning aid.. Adding toe in to the rear can help stop the rear end sliding out in the corners when under power..

And as the others have suggested, front uni drive shafts and adjustable camber links will help you tune the car.. A steel pinion will help with durability..

Many of the Tamiya Touring car bodies dont have the best aerodynamics for racing, (the wings are often too small) so I would also suggest running a "race type" touring car body like the Dodge Stratus, Protoform DNA etc..

And finally.... PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE........

ALSO... I have found that one of the areas that many rookie racers suffer with is car setup, and it is something that can make a big difference to how your car drives, and therefore how easy it is for you to drive it.. If you feel that the car is not handling as well as it could, try asking one of the more experienced drivers to do a few laps with it, and then see if they can give you any help or pointers how you may make the car handle better...

I'd also suggest cutting out the little shelf inside the chassis to mount the esc as low as possible.... with the speed tuned gears in place you can also add a 26t pinion with a little trimming to get the pinion to fit (you'll also be using the "second spur gear" instead of where it would normally mount.... and if you can find a long arm setup.... do it.

Just to save any confusion... the wide arm suspension kit doesnt make the track width any wider. What it does it alter the angles of which the suspension arms rise. So rather than rising and shortening the width by pulling the wheel in towards the chassis. The wheel rises more upwards. Keeping the track width more or less the same. Regardless of the hieght of the wishbone. Thus improving handling.

Always struggled with overheating in my TL01.. Melted both the original chassis and a lightweight.. Pic of the melted lightweight..

Really recommend the carbon gear shafts and high speed gearing set. Them in association with a brushless and bearings resolved the heat issues for me..

Just in case it hasn't been mentioned here, the speed Tuned gear set for the TL01 ( 53342) will not fit the TL01b Chassis.... There was me thinking it was the almost the same 'centre chassis' parts except for the wider arms and dog bones etc.

Yes it fits a lot of cars but is not listed here for the TL01b, is the listing wrong then?
Have you fitted 53342 to a TL01b then?

the tl-01 b can fit the speed tuned gear set, but the gear set comes with the warning of not to be used with the buggy variant, or the rally one due to the increase of wheel diameter the buggy star dish wheels both versions use

The centre chassis is the same. Exactly the same.

Tony's Tamiya parts says it can NOT be used with the TL01B

Just shows it's worth to ask questions even if something appears black and white, if I just left it at reading that listing then I'd have taken it as gospel... live and learn.

High speed gear set makes overheating Worse ;)

Nothing stopping you installing SpeedTuned gear set into any TL01 or TL01B/rally but as stock overall gearing "rollout" is already pretty high, your motor will cook on a B/rally.

I've got Truck tyres on my B, I so seek LOWER gearing... :(

24 1150s

kit comes with 22 nylons & 2 brass

drag from bearing grease will reduce as they wear in after a few runs.

From chassis I've opened that others have built, there's much more drag caused from the huge dollops of grease they use on those wiiiiiide gears - totally unnecessary! Use oil or only the tiniest smear of grease is all that's needed.

Even if you run the gears totally dry, dare say they'll last longer than many other parts of the rest of the car.

Run a strip of tape down the chassis halves seam below to stop grit getting in.
