Hahaha, quite a 'low standard' you've chosen there, Theo!! [:P] Bit like saying "Handles better than a TC Cortina", eh??

Nope, just like we in Holland all wear wooden shoes and live in windmills... [|)] LOL

Did you ever ran down a kangaroo with you RC cars? [}:)]

I ment ppl putting car fuel on the tires for grip...(they actually believe you if you tell them...

id="quote">id="quote">

Ditto, the locals used to use suntan lotion on tyres... until that practice of "unauthorised additive" was banned. [B)]

id="quote">id="quote">

They also believe you when you tell then to put some motor-oil on the tires... They never thought of the the effect of skidding when driving through an oil-puddle, stand alone this... [}:)]

As for the suntan lotion: liquid soap (to wash your hands with [;)] )works good on tyres, is makes them nice and soft. I used it on my HB tyres and they are nice and black... [8D] I think you can wash it of with a lot of water though (and scrubbing hard) [:D] Just in case you don't like the result... [:)]

There exist also special products like Armor All for that, soap may dry them out...

Haha, we're not talking about restoring your vintage rubber, Theo - but more like improving your tyres grip for racing. Some oils (eg anyone tried 'oil of wintergreen' or 'eucalyptus'?) so soften the rubber to give better grip, so does toasting them with tyrewarmers.

Yes remember warming my Holiday Buggy tires with lighters, since it was such a serious competition machine... [:D] LOL

Even for that there exist special products you apply on your tires, like from LRP, but for on road use...

No, they don't dry it out, they do the opposite! [:D] If it would dry them out they would become very hard in stead of soft. [:)]

Normally, a tyre gets a bit harder when used because the 'oil' in the syntetic rubber 'leaks' out (a bit like a sponge maybe, but different). The soap replaces the 'lost oil' and makes then as softer as they used to be. Your tyres wear quicker that way: the become softer and get more grip: and more grip means more wear (softer tyres wear faster than harder tyres... [;)] )

I did this on my BF tyres as well, though these were still pretty good when I started. There tends to get more soap then the rubber can 'absorb' and you have to take that of again with a paper towel. [:)] I have got a special towel for applying the soap, but I think and ordinairy towel or what so ever will do as well.

And if it appears not to work... well, if it rains, the track will get extra clean this way! [:o)]

Have you considered of cleaning your house floor with your cars? [:D] As far as I know from my limited chemistry knowledge, all soaps remove fat, just the hand ones have some creams for the hand not to dry out, but am not sure if this effect will be in the long run good for the tires...

I soak rubber bits in ArmorAll; it won't fix cracked rubber but it does seem to make rubber a little softer & spongier. Time will tell.

I don't use it on racing tyres to improve grip though. [:D] These days with the modern 27/32/35 compounds, they'll give your tourer enough grip to traction roll anyway so that's more than enough without needing additives.

About the tires, soap DOES make them soft and black. I don't think the effect of reacting with fat so it solvant in water has anything to do with it (soap is an 'emulgator' for fat and water). It reverses the drying out of tires a bit, though tears can't be fixed with it. [:(] Maybe with glue? [:o)]

I hear there is a procuct for fixing tires (don't know if it works for tears as well, though.). It is called GummiPflege and it was distributed by BMW-dealers as far as I know. I don't remember the order number though. Only thing I remember of it was that it's not silicone-based. It's somewhere on these boards here and I'll look it up later. [:D] I bet this is very usefull.
