Hi all. I've recently noticed that some people mount their shells using Velcro and I was interested to get people's views.

What do you prefer and why?

Will the Velcro take paint off the shell if I decide to change the Velcro?

From what I've seen racers use velcro rather than body posts. My 2 have got clips to use the body pins but they aren't tall posts, one has them on the side at the front and the other has one on top at the front. The rear is secured by velcro around the bottom of the body. The velcro works well for dirt tracks as it provides some protection from the dirt that inevitably gets in. It also holds the body close so no chance of it getting caught up when crashing. Velcro is also easy as you don'thave pins to worry about and lose.

I can't say how it affects the paint but when racing a shell will usually only last a season so its not an issue.

For bashers the velcro would be useful but not essential

I tried it once, and all it did was strip the paint off. Once the paint is off the velcro sticks real good, but then all you notice is the velcro. To each their own, but I prefer the pins. I run the small pins when racing to reduce them coming out during a crash.

Thank guys. That helps. I use mine for bashing but thought it would be handy having Velcro but don't want to risk damaging the paint. For me I have only ever used pins.

What about command strips? Has anyone ever used them and if so what were the results?

I've never tried command strips. So I can't comment on those. But I did have a spontaneous idea about trying hot glued on magnets. You can get tiny rare earth magnets that are about the diameter of a pencil. I bet they would work, and not mess up the paint as bad as velcro. The only concern that I can think of is keeping the RC radio away from them. But otherwise they might turn out to be the best option if you didn't want to use clips.

Has anyone tried magnets?

Stealth mounts? I've never heard of those. (quick search) -  magnets!

The stupid thing is I knew they used magnets and thought I had mentioned that in the post, duh!

I haven't had problems with the velcro ruining paint, and just buy it from the hardware store so nothing special.

I might try command strips. They do like a hook and tongue strip. I just like the idea that if I decide to remove the strips from the shell, there is a good chance the paint won't be affected.

Its all good fellas, whatever works for you.

I might try magnets on my next lexan body. I like the idea of not drilling holes.

Keep us posted with how it goes. I'll come back with my findings on the command strips

I run Velcro on my buggy down the sides at the base. It makes it snug. I'd do the same on my truck if it were possible. Trick to not ripping paint off is grab the Velcro that's attached to the body when you go to remove. I've never ripped it off or seen any damage. Downside is if a light paint shade, it'll show through.

I use velcro on a few cars.  I use 3M Heavy Duty velcro tape, which is seriously tough stuff.  The glue is intensely strong and the hook-and-look is also tough.  Downside is it doesn't hold things steady, so depending on your mounting area / size, you can end up with a wobbly shell.

I've never had issue with 3M taking the paint off but it's always a risk I've accepted.  Where possible, I worm my fingers under the shell to prize the velcro apart from within, rather than just tugging on the shell.  That helps reduce the load on the shell.

As others have said, little strips of velcro around the lip of an undertray help keep dirt out of buggies.

I've got a few sets of magnetic body mounts but you'll have the same issue with paint: the magnets need to be glued or taped to the body.  I've found if your body isn't perfectly flat, it's hard to get the magnets to stick.

Drifters are indeed weird and they'll often use a rather expensive aluminium contraption to extend the rear bodymounts aft off the rear shock tower, away from the rear screen and under the boot area, then use magnets.  I made my own using some long body posts mounted horizontally on the shock tower, some ABS tube slid over them, some ABS sheet glued across the top and some velcro tape to hold the body on.  My drifter is on the workbench at home, I'll try to get a photo at lunch.

I noticed in TA-Mark showroom that he has a df03ms. I can't see any posts or Velcro and would love to know how the shell might be fixed. So far the only thing I can think of is to just do magnets on cut down posts but in one photo, there aren't any posts. Anything better out there? Just want something that will look nice and neat
